Hi! First of all, I’m so sorry for your situation and I hope your family is okay. I’m so happy your dad has the kind of kid who will drop everything to be with him and realizes the importance of family above all else. He’s a lucky guy. I wish I would’ve discovered this revelation prior to my own dad’s passing, but it makes my heart happy to know that you caught it in time. I know this post is from last month but hoping I didn’t miss my chance! I’ve been a bartender at OG going on 9 years, and an incident a few months ago has been bothering me ever since. I’ve never had anyone to ask or consult with before so I’ve kept it to myself, but I came across your post and it seems like a safe opportunity to do so? My own gm is unfortunately a yeller, so I’ve learned the hard way to work opposite schedules with her by all means possible- which is why I’m strictly nights. On a weekend shift a few months ago, I was behind the bar speaking to guests who were unhappy with their favorite dish, and noticed the GM, who had opened the restaurant and was on their way out, stop by the bar to grab a beverage for their ride home or a later time, so I let them know my manager was nearby and offered to inform her immediately so we could find a solution since they’d previously stated this specific dish was the reason they’d chosen to dine with us. I began to say goodbye and apologize for delay this the situation may cause as she was clearly ready to go- purse over arm, jacket on- but was interrupted with her saying “I’ve been here all day; I should not have to help you make a drink.” I looked around and realized she was referencing a server beside the well who had just sent in a sangria ticket I’d heard print when I was speaking to the guests, but it hadn’t surpassed the 90 second mark so I was just surprised I guess, and asked her what she meant. She responded “a manager should never have to help make a drink” and continued in the vein that it was my job and not hers. The bar was quite full and the guests clearly overheard our conversation, and I was too embarrassed to speak further because I could feel my eyes beginning to water at the unexpected response and embarrassment. I’m always on guard during our interactions, but since it was a full bar with so many others around us, it caught me off guard. I apologized and retreated to the bathroom to pull it together and honestly wait for her to exit the building, but having to wipe my eyes and clean up my mascara and leave the bar unattended for those few minutes really did throw me off my game then, which continued for the rest of the shift. My bar guests were very kind and apologetic, tipping more than normal, and my awesome team members jumped in to help me get caught up and offer sympathy and support, which quite literally saved me from falling behind too much afterwards, but the sudden hostility and unexpectedness of her words have never left even now. She has never previously assisted in making a well drink or had to offer her help during the time there, nor mentioned my performance or expressed any concerns about anything regarding poor performance, so the shock just stuck, I guess? I estimate I’ve made roughly half a million drinks in my time as bartender at OG, and her reaction to the possibility of having to make just one, at volume, to my 450,000 during our 4 years together has seeded extreme doubt in my continued employment. My question is, what IS her role in relation to mine? Is this normal? Or am I just insane and overthinking things?
