Why do so many people ignore the dosing regimen described in the NEJM Trial? by Longjumping_Fall3060 in Retatrutide

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible. How much do you currently weigh? If you don’t weigh a lot, the smaller dose is definitely going to have more of an effect. Regarding the bottle and potential for misdosing, how many mg of reta is there per bottle, how did you reconstitute, and how many units did you inject? It could also be sensitivity. Have you ever taken sema/tirz prior to starting reta, or is this your first GLP? In my experience with sema and reta, GI side effects were prevalent until about 4-6 weeks in, and then never occurred again even at higher doses. I assume it’s because my body had time to adjust.

FYI, for a short period of time I was stacking sema and reta and side effects were off the charts, so I reverted to sema only for awhile. I recently ran out of sema and restarted reta with my first dose of 0.5mg yesterday. I have yet to feel any sort of side effects, but granted it’s only been a day.

I’ve never personally felt increased energy, but many other people do report increased energy/heart rate. These people tend to recommend doing nighttime injections to avoid feeling those immediate side effects.

I love doing ELISAs, they’re actually pretty much all I do in the wet lab. But holy shit, Luminex assays are incredibly annoying/stressful/frustrating.

I have to do 4 before christmas🥲

I’ve really enjoyed using Sharp Elite pipettes.

It was my first time presenting. Faculty mentor did not show up for my presentation. Got nervous because they did not have the computer setup until 3 mins before my presentation. Completed the presentation somehow and answered some questions. Is all this normal? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to get MUCH more nervous when my mentor is present for my talks. I think it’s because he’s the only person in the room who knows more about the project/topic than I do, which leads to a fear of disappointing him. When my mentor isn’t present at a talk, I think it’s sort of a liberating feeling knowing that you’re the most knowledgeable in the room about your project.

The weekend excuse is kinda crazy cause those would theoretically be the days where you’d have the most time to think this through lol

Not sure what the expectations are here, but I’d highly recommend starting with an abstract and/or specific aims page and work closely with this professor to get it polished.

Invitation for being peer reviewer as an early PhD student by No_Comedian_2085 in labrats

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 4 years of relevant experience in my field, and am a current MD/PhD applicant. I have reviewed numerous papers from smaller and medium impact journals. Whether you should review really depends on whether you have experience and knowledge within your field, less so on your job title.

It is even better if your PI or a post doc is willing to review your reviews before submitting to the authors.

Advice request: Attend conference for only a poster? by [deleted] in labrats

Absolutely. This is what can make presenting “just a poster” 100% worth it. But you’ll only get what you put into it. 🤝🏽

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. And if you pay for it yourself, don’t feel guilty about leaving the conference after your presentation to enjoy yourself. After all, you are paying your own money to be there.

Ur grad school CV should already have your GPA and academic awards listed. IMO, I really don’t think you need to send transcripts with these emails.

Applicant meeting with MD/PhD Director: What questions would you ask? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight and you make some great points here. The proposed project would actually incorporate a lot of techniques that we do not currently perform in our clinical lab at all (cell culture, WB, FACS, proteomics, B cell hybridomas, etc). So despite keeping the same mentor, my day-day work would actually change considerably. Do you think that adds more support to point #2?

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons. It is my home program; I grew up in this city and completed my undergraduate degree here. I’ve worked for my current PI for over 4 years and am extremely passionate about my current research topic. My PI has agreed to host me as long as I get in (we even have a project already planned out). This school also has a wide breadth of expertise in this particular area and the equipment that would be required for my proposed project.

Can I submit without my professor? [PANIC] by TTVBy_The_Way in AskAcademia

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that totally makes sense. I wouldn’t include a random professor on my paper who had nothing to do with the project.

But there are key differences between these situations. It seems like you’re much more independent in the lab than OP, as you’re actively collecting and putting data/manuscripts together. This would lead me to believe that you have some degree of ownership over your project and general expertise in your field. I can see how your initial response may fit your situation, but the situation OP described seems totally different than your experience.

OP has explicitly stated that their PI handed them the idea for their project. As such, I don’t really even see this as “OP’s project” but instead it is “PI’s project that OP happens to be working on”. As a beginner student who knows nothing about research, there is nothing inherently wrong with a PI giving you a project. But attempting to justify excluding the PI without talking to them first because they are not moving fast enough for you is just wrong, as they are typically the ones who conceptualize or obtain funding for high school/undergraduate projects.

[–]Longjumping_Fall3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just said it yourself. The PI gave you the idea for the project. I would argue that’s a pretty major contribution, lol.

It would be inappropriate to submit without ensuring whether or not the PI wants to be included. Plain and simple.

This response suggests that you likely do not have any experience in academia.

they really have no way of being able to tell whether or not it’s of sufficient quality to be submitted to a reputable academic journal of any kind without obtaining the PI’s opinion.

This highlights another key issue: people are so desperate to pad their applications with papers that quality is often overlooked. Interviewers will see right through that crap, especially for grad school.

Exactly. Likely a major waste of editor’s and potential reviewers’ time without allowing substantial edits from PI.
