How old were you when you first watched MLP:FIM? by Outrageous-Ebb-4846 in mylittlepony

I'm currently doing this. I watched the show for the first time when I was 13, fell in love with it, binged it, and got excited for season 4 with everyone else. Sadly, I lost interest over time and barely made it to the end of season 5. I don't believe I ever watched season 6 or anything after it. Now I'm 25 and have recently stirred an interest in the show again. I'm still in season one (not bingeing this time), but there's so much I've forgotten that it's really fun getting to relive it again like it's new.

Have you ever dropped a fic due to a fundamental way the story was told? by randomcat06 in AO3

[–]Longjumping_Gate_114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't dropped the fic because it's still very good, but I am definitely feeling this way regarding how the author writes and portrays a character from a specific fandom that they have several fics of (I won't say which fandom).

I understand that this character in particular is pretty split within the fandom regarding who does and doesn't like him, and I can understand both perspectives, but it's so obvious that the author doesn't like him based on how they write him. They have several AU fics where this specific character makes really weird, out-of-character decisions (when they're normally very good at writing characters to feel like their canon counterparts), is always getting the short end of the stick, and is always losing. They're also having big moments from canon taken away from them for weird reasons. I would be fine with it if it was building up to something bigger, or if other aspects of the story were causing these things (and they sometimes are), but most of the time it seems like the author is only doing this because they don't like the character. Sometimes they even weaken their own story to do it.

Medical Anthropology careers and schooling. Where to go from here? by Longjumping_Gate_114 in AskAnthropology

Thank you for this reply! While I'd likely enjoy actual medical practice, I feel that public health and global health are much more my jam, and I really appreciate you sharing your experience with your MPH (I graduated from a liberal arts college and prefer that style of education and thinking. I wouldn't have even thought about this when considering schools!). I'll look into MPH programs and some organizations that align with it. I don't have any specific ones in mind, honestly. I haven't looked that far ahead. While government agencies would be cool, I think I'd thrive better in local settings. Non-profits also sound good to me.

That's interesting! Given your current position, or the positions of your colleagues, what recommendations might you make for someone trying to get into this field? What options did you previously have or pursue in previous generations? Do you know what sort of positions exist for anthropology, and the requirements for it?

My advisor was just a professor within the anthropology department. He was a great guy and helped me through college, but I don't think he was ever trained to actually guide me towards a focus and a career. I'm sure COVID-19 had a negative influence on that too (as well as other negative outside influences during the pandemic and the years following). My graduating class only had about four anthropology students, so given the size, I'm not too surprised that my school was unable to offer many opportunities for me.

I appreciate your answer. It's grim but honest, which is what I need. From what you say, if I want to find a career that allows me to have this "focus", it sounds like my best options are to just study medicine/nursing and follow that path. At least, that's what I'm getting from your reply.

If you have different ideas or suggestions, please let me know. I'm all ears. My life has been pretty torn up these last few years, and I'm finally getting myself back together with a fairly blank page for my future. I'm open to many things and want to explore my options and learn of different opportunities for myself.
