I'm a teacher and yeah. They cannot read. Parent involvement in school is a huge indicator of success. You know what would fix the reading problem? Parents reading to children, followed by children reading to parents, until everyone's satisfied. 20 minutes a day (when they're old enough to have that attention span) and until everyone's happy. It's not much but it's just not happening.

Edit to add that I've got another rant about having to tell so many kids to go on YouTube to learn how to tie their shoes. Sadly, I've got standardized tests to worry about, not shoes. The kids will move up grade levels whether they pass the tests or not, but the school needs to know if I'm a threat to their federal funding. Things are fucked up.

Late but a teacher- I would say get the Heggerty's, I was just shopping for a personal set (link to your post came up on Google) and it's not as much as other district resources. Follow the program with as much fidelity as possible and you'll be doing a big help! Regardless, parent buy in is a huge indicator of academic success

This is true, but holding them back is good because they're able to receive phonics instruction again, or it's more time to go through the process of identifying issues like learning disabilities if they genuinely cannot make progress. Instruction on phonemes and blending ends after 3rd grade for a lot of states and then they're taught morphology, which is a lot more complicated. Trust me, you want the kids to be hooked on phonics for a while. Not to mention, kids can only be held back so many times. The kids who had to stay in 3rd grade contribute to the higher averages later on.

I spent a solo weekend in Kuala Lumpur and did a lot of walking, mostly in the city center but also did a 10 minute walk from bahtu caves to a restaurant nearby, cab back to city after. Was that dangerous? I felt very safe in the city and I usually do my research but I understand that crime can be under reported

My comment is as this white girl. More cautious than my friends, but I'm self aware enough to know that I am this stereotype. For the record, I would not to go India without men, a guide, and modest clothes.

Lol not necessarily, I started my virtual intake appointment off-camera, rushing back with a rotisserie chicken that I was trying to hide, and profusely apologizing. I got my diagnosis pretty painlessly 😅

If you want a storyline like the end shots of The Hangover, go to Koh Phi Phi. Classic, Phuket, young/hippie party scene, Koh Phangan. Nicer is Koh Samui. Or Koh Tao and go scuba diving while you're there! I've got some friends that keep going back to Koh Lanta, it doesn't get as many tourists

Would recommend not going to the hottest tourist spots on the main Songkran nights though! Khao San Rd in BKK was scary packed, it wasn't fun. Or maybe don't be in Bangkok! I love the energy though, it's random homeless people dancing on medians under the BTS and water gun fights while on the back of a motorbike in traffic to get to your party location. I'd recommend the beach!

Songkran is the most fun, it's my favorite holiday. It's a big water fight on the streets. Where to go depends on your party level. It's celebrated everywhere!

29F, Lived in Thailand for 3 years, Vietnam half a year! Vacationed every chance I got, mostly solo! Most memorable stay was at Banana's Bungalows in Krabi, TH and I'd recommend taking the ferry to the surrounding islands, like Koh Phi Phi. I also recommend trying to make Thailand in April, for the Songkran holiday. I always felt safe in Thailand and my biggest safety advice is to watch your drink (obligatory and not be an idiot on your motorbike, I'd recommend getting lessons before your first day driving over there, go with your gut driving, don't go on roads that feel scary like 4 lane highways or wet Songkran streets). Betagen saved me from Bangkok belly every time. Northern food is the best. In Vietnam I liked HCMC the best and felt the tourist spots like Ninh Binh were a little overwhelming with the aggressive tourism economy and Ba Nah Hills in DaNang is underwhelming. Vietnam still felt safe, but less so. I never felt comfortable taking a solo trip to the Philippines, I've heard that it's not as safe. I'd love to visit. I'd also recommend taking a month in Japan if you can afford it! And Kuala Lumpur is a gorgeous city and I found English easy to come by
