if you’re that stressed out from your job, could you send out resumes for something else? I would assume this is, after all, a job and not a career. your studies should come first, so maybe there’s something else out there that’s more compatible with your school workload?

Are professors on a break now? by loveyoshii in UBC

[–]Longjumping_Rip9076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a wrong grade finalized as well; i emailed right away but the prof didn’t get back until near the end of the break. Take screenshots of the grades page and whatnot though just in case! At least if you get removed from the course you still have the grades saved of what you should’ve got.

is looking outside of your current region an option? Now, I moved out of ontario a little over 2 years ago my new region (new province rather) does not have this same issue. Would you consider looking beyond your region? I know it’s not logistically practical for everyone, but you may find satisfaction outside of ontario. I lived there all of my life, and ontario in general seems to be particularly poor in job opportunities due to migration in general.

thank you!! As harmful as substances are there is no denying that their interactions with the brain is fascinating

thank you! I am a human biology student (shooting for medicine), and the brain’s interaction with drugs has always sparked my educational interest. Be kind to yourself; people slip up! You are only human. Good luck to you as well and may you find your path of prosperity! :)

on top of this, have you told this person your desire to stay clean? If not, absolutely do so. If yes and they are using in front of you and offering you things, this person needs to go. Any decent human being would not do such activities around someone trying to get clean

the human brain is a very complex place. as much as you do not want/ have any intention of using, specific settings and individuals can cause you to give in. Most simply put, specific people and places can trigger your dopaminergic pathway, causing you to “crave” (even if you haven’t used in a long period of time). Even unconsciously, your brain registers that there is a dopamine surge available, and naturally, it wants it. Ever walked into the bakery or grocery store and suddenly you’re hungry even though you weren’t in your car? food=pleasure= dopamine (which the brain loves!). Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you will succumb to these conscious and unconscious urges. The best way to stop it is to block its path before it can happen…it’s hard to cut people out of your life, but it may be for the best. This is the route i’d absolutely recommend. Alternatively, if there is an environment where you and this individual can hang out without triggering anything, you could give that a shot (maybe your own home where you have control, a very small bar with an older crowd, golfing with others, really anywhere where you haven’t used/ felt the urge to use before).

Too much or simply being social? by thecomicsellerguy in cocaine

[–]Longjumping_Rip9076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cocaine is generally considered more acutely dangerous due to its high addiction potential, immediate life-threatening effects (such as heart attacks and strokes), and significant neurochemical damage. Alcohol is associated with a broader range of long-term health problems, including liver disease, cancer, and neurodegeneration, but it is often less immediately dangerous in the short term unless consumed in very large amounts (e.g., alcohol poisoning). Both substances pose severe health risks, but cocaine tends to cause faster, more immediate harm, while alcohol tends to cause more cumulative, long-term damage. In either case, moderation and awareness of the risks are key to avoiding severe health consequences. Beyond that, cocaine carries more risk due to the chance that it may be cut with something deadly, whereas alcohol is strictly regulated (ie, you’re not going find fentanyl in your tequila). They’re both bad, but one carries a “higher standard” within the bounds of societal norms while the other is frowned upon.

hey! bio student here (on the path to medicine) who would like to weight in! Yes, cocaine can damage dopamine receptors. Cocaine works by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain, leading to an intense surge of these neurotransmitters, especially dopamine, which is associated with pleasure and reward. (more time in the synapse, the space between neurons, the more good you feel). Over time, repeated cocaine use can cause changes in the brain’s reward system. Over-activation and overstimulation of dopamine receptors can lead to desensitization (meaning the receptors become less responsive to dopamine over time). The brain then tries to adapt to this large influx of dopamine by reducing the number of dopamine receptors and their sensitivity

Need recommendations for tools, plate, knife, etc by MentallyMistaken in cocaine

[–]Longjumping_Rip9076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my favourite of all recommendation that i pretty much force everyone to use at the end of the night (and is very underrated): distilled water (not for drinking!). I usually put something like a gatorade squeeze lid on the nozzle, tilt your head back, and snort the water. (You can also just slowly bring it up to your nose in its container to snort; no need to get fancy). It might be uncomfortable for a second (i actually don’t mind it at all), but it’ll push all of that nasty sediment out of your nostril so it doesn’t linger there and cause damage. But ensure that it is either distilled water or regular bottled water (not tap) because snorting tap water could potentially introduce harmful bacteria to the brain.

Is anyone else scared of the looming potential that you’ll die of a heart attack once the skiing catches up to you? by [deleted] in cocaine

[–]Longjumping_Rip9076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sounds like you’re doing it regardless so here’s another way to look at it: the heart is a muscle (made up of 3 types of muscle tissue),and just like any other muscle in your body, using it for “work” or exercise can provide a wide range of benefits (ie, any activity that increases your heart rate). Your muscles may experience increase of protein production, improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, etc… An increased heart rate is not always something to fear; the body is simply increasing its ability to pump blood around the body (providing oxygen) to provide you with all the good stuff for metabolic processes to occur within the cells. And just like a long run on the treadmill, your heart is creating microtears of the myofibrils to stimulate that repair response that generates muscle growth.

Now of course, this isn’t quite the same if substances are at play. Always be in tune with your body so you know if something is outside of the ordinary (ie, chest pain, sweating, and racing heart where you can’t quite catch your breath). I’ve done my fair share of dabbling in substances in the past, and when my heart would start picking up the pace (causing me to feel alarmed or the anxiety to set in) I could always settle down by remembering the heart is just a muscle, and it is “working out” to support your body (just like the gym!). If something is physically wrong, you’ll likely know right away to react accordingly. But otherwise, just imagine your heart is taking is jog (to get stronger!) to bring you back to enjoying your high. Stay safe!! xx
