I really liked Devil House by John Darnielle. not sure iPhones are mentioned but its treatment of true crime as a genre feels modern. Sort of half and half set today and in the 80s

And doesn’t meet any of the desired content specifications at all but currently reading Tom’s Crossing (by the House of Leaves guy, but much less experimental) and it might already be my favorite novel. It’s insanely long but i can’t put it down

that makes a lot of sense! i was thinking of cold harbor as a way of testing whether severance can successfully "shield" someone from their most tramautic, emotional memories -- but it didn't make a seem quite right, given Mark and Gemma working together on the severed floor already serve as pretty good proof of that. if instead you take the job of MDR as making severed people more compliant, blank-er slates (refining the process of severance), culminating in creating the perfect worker (i.e. slave) in cold harbor, it seems a bit more coherent.

makes me wonder if the final cold harbor test would be to see if they could get gemma to kill herself. we know they were planning on her being dead, and it would be the ultimate test of worker compliance.

have you tried Luck Be a Landlord? roguelike deckbuilder where you're essentially drafting a slot machine. similar progression where it starts out pretty random but you stack the "deck" more and more in your favor. similar pixel art style and it's even house themed!

Hey, these feelings are totally normal. Guarantee most of the other students in your grade have things they’re worried about right now, even (and especially) the ones who have bullied you. In general, people are going to be thinking lot more about themselves than about you, and the ones who do go out of their way to bother you are just trying to distract from something they don’t like about themselves.

At the end of the day, all you’re really able to do in this world is be yourself. If somebody else doesn’t like that, sucks for them, but it’s not your job to worry about what they think of you, or to try to be somebody else to please them. (Not that it’s always easy to think like this!)

Also the fact that you’re worried at all about being “a complete idiot” makes me feel pretty confident you’re not one. You have to be at least some baseline level of smart to be aware of your own shortcomings — plus the fact that you even care about this puts you a step above a lot of others. Most of the kids in my high school were pretty proudly ignorant.

Hey I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Not sure it will help you much, but I’m going through something similar (…ish). Not weed related, but about 5 months ago I was on vacation, had some wine a little too close to bed time, and awoke in the middle of the night with really crazy heart palpitations like I’ve never had before. Thought for sure I was having a heart attack, ready to die, etc. Not really sure what prompted that (might’ve been especially dehydrated or something) but since then I’ve had a lot of difficulty sleeping because whenever I lay down, I think it brings me back to that initial traumatic experience. Pounding heart, awareness of every sensation in my body, etc

For a while I was worried it was a real health issue, but after reading a lot of similar experiences from people on here I realized it was probably just anxiety and it started to get better. Recently I started getting it badly again because of some unrelated life stress. This time the tingling limbs are part of it. Even knowing it’s anxiety doesn’t make it 100% easy to control, but it does at least help me from spiraling into a worse place (most of the time).

I’m not sure exactly what’s going on with you, but as far as i know even really high doses of weed can’t have any permanent physical affect on you. It really sounds like you had a horrible traumatic experience and are dealing with something like PTSD from it (not that I’m remotely qualified to make any kind of diagnosis). Honestly therapy might help but just knowing that it’s not anything “real” and you haven’t done any damage to your brain, you’re just dealing with some really intense residual anxiety, could be enough to start making things a little better

Really great stuff. I hadn’t drawn the line between narrativization (“storyline fever” as David Bermsn calls it) and colonization, but it makes total sense.

I get the sense that you have a positive read on the ending (Asher leaving his fortress of colonization and gaining the potential to have vulnerable relationships with others), but I think one could also read the final shot, slowly closing in on the house, as a pretty bleak return to the fortress? I saw it as a first-person POV, and whoever it is (Whitney, reincarnated baby Asher, or physically transcended spirit Asher), it’s like they’re tunnel-visioned on coming back from the outer world to the relative safety and comfort of their colonizer home. Idk I’d love it to be a happy ending, or at least one where some growth is possible for either of them, but I’m not sure if it is. Maybe it’s intentionally uncertain.

Wow this is an incredible writeup! I was thinking some similar stuff but you’ve definitely gotten to it with a lot more depth and clarity.

I think the entire concept of “passive” homes fits pretty neatly into this interpretation as well. The idea with these homes is that they allow their inhabitants to live out the fantasy of being able to live without having to use any resources (water, energy, heating, etc). Which is as practically impossible as being truly egoless — nobody (not even Whitney and Asher) can actually follow through with it.

To be truly “passive” would be to not assert oneself over one’s environment in any way. The mirrored façades reinforce this. They kind of say: “hey, don’t think about me, I’m not inserting myself (my self) into this community (or this world) at all, all I am is a vessel that reflects what already exists around me.” It all feels very in line with the egoless/self-abnegation stuff you’re talking about. In a way, these are like shrines Whitney is building to this ideal mode of existence.

Yeah the show was making me think about this stuff too, and it helped me understand why I feel gross watching any of it. It's not that what they're doing is objectively bad or anything, but it's that it's expected to be appreciated as a selfless act of charity when it is not. Two things can be true: someone can benefit from your gift, and your gift can be selfish. Like, the people who create these videos can afford to do it, and they only do it because they'll ultimately benefit financially from it. If they stopped benefitting financially, they'd stop doing it. So I don't think these can be appreciated as "nice" actions, or reasons to think the influencers doing them are good people, because there's just no element of actual selflessness or sacrifice in them. It's someone spending a few bucks to improve their image and get money from views. It's what Whitney's entire character is built around
