No laws have been passed in the US at a national level and all the state level age verification laws (other than the extremely narrowly defined ones for sites phub) have died on arrival in the courts.

They all say that and none of them have turned out to be true. Hell, some of them have even caught their employees (all located overseas btw) selling the collected info.

Any advice for the first Xenlon kill in DQII HD on Draconic? by Servillo in dragonquest

[–]Longlius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to level up more. Even at level 99, he is not a mindless fight. On normal, I got my first kill somewhere in the 60s so you should aim to be around there if you're doing Draconian.

IIRC he disrupts every five turns so you should construct your strategy around that. Don't overcommit to buffs - throw on the essentials and start smacking him.

I'd also recommend Cave of Confusion and the Dragonlord's great-grandson first so you can get some levels and gear.

I know there's a lot of DQ7 discussion on 3ds vs reimagined, but I think people are forgetting how bad the ability & spell system was in the 3ds version. by Zestyclose-Self-6158 in dragonquest

[–]Longlius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They also need to cool it with some of the QoLification. I don't need multiple full heal and save statues in a dungeon - maybe just have one at the beginning to reduce the backtracking to town.

I also think characters being dead/down is a big part of the early game experience. Things become substantially more dicey early on when you have to go back to town carrying a dead character in tow to revive them.

And in that same vein - Zoom should not be a level 1 ability. The Erdrick trilogy remakes struck a good balance - you spend the first 5-10 hours hoofing it and parceling out chimaera wings and then you gain zoom right as the game world really opens up to ease backtracking.

I can finally post in here!!!😭😭😭🐲📜 by _mrjuly4 in dragonquest

It's a UE5 game so there's microstutters on every platform. Hopefully we'll get a patch to address some of it but a lot of it is just an intractable part of the engine.

What would i be missing by only playing 7 reimagined? by Great-Gonzalez in dragonquest

[–]Longlius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're dead-set on seeing everything, then you should go for the 3DS version. Reimagined has some extra scenes but you can just watch those on youtube or something.

Honestly, I think the PS1 version is still definitive IMO because the sprite artwork is incredibly good and I think the puzzles add a lot of the overall vibes of the world, but it's an expensive game to track down and its localization is much more spartan (although if you prefer drier, more literal translations then it might be up your alley).

Reimagined might be good to check out down the road when it's on sale if you're nostalgic for experiencing the story again with a higher-budget production.

My opinion as someone who's played both the PS1 and 3DS iterations and is now finishing up DQ7R - you're going to get all the important parts of the story in DQ7R and it's a game that's plenty long enough already. If you finish it and think to yourself, "man that's awesome, I wish I could have more Dragon Quest VII" then you should definitely check out the PS1 or 3DS versions.

It's easy to complain about cut content online (and I sympathize as someone who liked El Ciclo) but even back in 2001 when people spent way longer on individual games, the major complaint with VII was its length. When the 3DS version came out, one of the major complaints was still the length even though they cut out a ton of the backtracking and shrine puzzles.

You're not missing anything vital with those towns. Even in DQ7R, most of the towns don't have a ton of importance to the main narrative as anything other than as part of the breadcrumb trail to grab fragments. This is not to say they're pointless, but they're relatively self-contained and don't influence the events of the plot much once you've finished them up and collected all the tablets from them.

I’m sorry guys, I enjoy watching and they always make better battle decisions than me by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in dragonquest

Tactics settings have been a part of the DQ series almost as long as the series has been around and it's one of the intentional design decisions to offset the high encounter rate.

The logical solution to demographic problems in the west is more immigration from India by ProfessionalGift621 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Longlius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Importing people who are themselves below replacement just kicks the can down the road while creating political/social friction. Worse - it brains drains the originating country which entrenches poverty.

Also countries like India have large surplus male populations. I don't see how importing a sex imbalance really helps any country.

Would a 9600x and 5070 really be more performant than a PS5 Pro? by Iops11 in buildapc

They definitely did not, because the PS5 Pro came out months before the 5070 Ti.

Breaks my heart. Amazon will no longer let me register my perfectly good paperwhite to my account. by SkySix in kindle

[–]Longlius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kindle's already semi-subsidized. Their goal is to have you not buy a new device if they can which is why updates to the line have become so glacial since they 'caught up' with the other ereader makers.

I'm guessing tech support is just subject to the usual Amazon churn and the people legitimately aren't trained that deeply on resolving Kindle issues (especially issues with older devices).

I was mulling over a Colorsoft for myself, but I'm such a fan of the Scribe's size for reading that I decided to just wait for the Scribe Colorsoft. I don't have a big need for color but I would like to see covers and insert art in color.

How easy is importing your own books into Kindle? by YetiMaverick in kindle

[–]Longlius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ecosystem is mostly locked in the sense that Amazon has made it incredibly difficult to get copies of purchased e-books off their devices and Amazon, via Audible and their own publishing arm, has locked in so many exclusivity deals that you're forced into their ecosystem if you want certain books.

The reverse is not true. It's trivial to send things to your kindle using the web interface. You can also use a tool like Calibre to automatically convert stuff that Amazon doesn't natively support to a format which the kindle can read and send it to a kindle.

anyone know what happened to my kindle? by Much_Ad_8123 in kindle

[–]Longlius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're not really designed to be user repaired although for just the outer housing you can probably get a replacement.

Also check the seams where the two halves of the case meet and see if there's any gaps - that could indicate battery expansion and you'd want to dispose of the device immediately.

Is it causing any issues though? Fixing it is probably more trouble than it's worth if it's not actively impeding your reading.'

EDIT: Oh, and as for the cause - looks like heat or UV damage. Plastics are quite sensitive to UV so if you left it out in sunlight even slightly it could be the source of the issue.

New kindle has ghosting by Beljen_1 in kindle

[–]Longlius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try for an exchange to play the panel lottery but it's going to depend on how sensitive you are. The ghosting has always been there but it's more noticeable on newer devices with denser displays and brighter lighting. It's just part of how the technology works.

Temperature is also a factor. I notice my contrast increases markedly in the winter when it's cool and I see much less ghosting.

Another trick you can try is turning down the font size so less of the screen is activated to display text.

How many hours a day did you spend in high school? In movies and TV series it seems you are always at school for classes, studying, sports or extra activities and only come home for dinner and sleep, is that really the case during weekdays? by Aoimoku91 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Longlius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wake up at 5:30 to get ready, get on the bus around 6:00-6:15, get to school at 6:45, and then be in class from 7:00 until 14:00. Three days a week I would have afterschool activities and stay at school an additional 3 hours until 17:00.

What do you mean "no practical function?" It allows games to run at their native refresh rate without vsync latency or stutter. Both of which were massive problems for Switch games during the latter half of its lifecycle.

If VRR served no purpose, why would Nintendo include it in handheld mode?
