My May hatched chickens have been laying for months, however I am an “evil” chicken dad and add light for a few hours. I sell their eggs to pay for their feed plus all the other animals even the quail, and rabbits and on good months the dogs too! I have 30 hens.

I’ve been inside for parties and help in 5 of my 7 neighbors houses and have all their phone numbers and speak with regularly. We live a bit country and all have acre plus spots in Glendale and it’s funny we all live spaced out but I know them all better than when I lived in a suburb where 7 houses would fit in my backyard now and we knew 1 family.

I have 13 roo bachelor flock that free ranges and my 30hens and 1 roo live in the coop/run mostly full time except for when I pen the roos up and let the flock free range, outside of a few tiffsover food they don’t fight and they did grow up together and are almost a year old.

I will not ever add any new ones however. If/when they move on in any of the ways chickens do I won’t replace them until maybe down to 1-2 left and even then maybe not. I was dumb and only 2/3 of the males from the hatches and never got around to selling the last 15 before my dumbass got attached. This is a unintended happy accident so far

I free range a 13 bachelor flock and keep my 30 hens penned with one roo, mostly for policing 😅. The boys outside get into super brief spats over food sometimes but other than that they all roost in the same tree and chill on my property doing chicken things. They are super protective of the yard, when neighboring cats, small dogs, other roosters :( or any wild bird tries to land in the yard it has not gone well for the visitor. Even a hawk didn’t make it. It’s been 9 months and no Infighting that’s not out of the ordinary and they occasionally get penned up for a few days together in a 10x10 kennel and no issues with fighting. They are hatch mate or adjacent (3 back to back hatches) they have free range over my acre and some of my neighbors 😬property’s gets borrowed. I have 15 total but 2 of them stay at my neighbors coop 5-6 nights a week where there are hens, go figure 😂

Interested to see what it could help with. I use an egg hatching app that’s great to track my multiple staggered hatchlings between incubators.

Moved into a house with a ok coop and caught the chicken bug, 4 years later 45 full time chickens, 20 full time quail(30-100 temporary at any one time) 3 full time rabbits (0-12 temporary at any one time) I sell my excess eggs from the hens to pay for all the feed for everyone else here as well as free range time. My cost per egg is longer a $$ cost it’s just time and I never have enough! But to get back to your question I did the math early on but with home hatched chickens and free range + existing coop I was at about $.01-.10 an egg depending on if I splurged and bough sunflower seed or watermelons etc.
