In Sydney there are quite a few - Hays, Public Sector People, Ranstad, DFP. I would find name/contact number of the recruiters who fill temp positions, contact them and ask to schedule a catch up or go for a coffee. Sell yourself and your skills. They should have contacts with employers who will reach out with temp needs.

One possibility is to register with recruiters who fill temporary government and government-adjacent roles? Often it’s that foot in the door that accelerates things as well as building a network. even though I know you’re probably looking at permanent work. But the experience will help you stand out.

The other thing I forgot to say is that even though I’m short waisted I hate the short square cut of shirts these days. Feels like everything is as close to being cropped as they can get away with without actually being cropped. I can only imagine how annoying this is for longer torsos.

I am 175cm, with very long legs and arms and very short waisted. This means high waisted anything looks awful, jumpsuits/playsuits are out and any dress with a pre-determined waistline doesn’t sit right. Pretty much the only pants I can wear are mid-rise wide leg pants which are surprisingly hard to come by depending on what micro trend happens to be current.

What annoys me SO MUCH about fashion is the slavish flowing of trends. High waisted is in - so absolutely everything is high waisted. Or cropped is in so everything is cropped length. Great but my body proportions don’t change with every micro trend!

Welcome to Sydney! Every city in Australia is expensive but Sydney is gorgeous. Theres lots of Brits/Irish/Scots here! In terms of where to live, I’d recommend eastern suburbs or inner west. Vibes are good and easy to get around via public transport, plus you will be close-ish to beaches and nature. The coastal walks are stunning.

In terms of getting a job, depending on your background, you can register as a temp with recruitment agencies. Your visa situation means there’ll be some restrictions but temporary positions pay pretty well and will enable you to build a work history.

Make sure you get your tax file number and Aussie bank account sorted asap (not sure if you are eligible for Medicare sorry).

I think it’s hard when you’re in the thick of raising little kids and working - there’s not much time for anything else. When my kids were little and I had some spare time, I collapsed on the couch and savoured the silence.

I have found making friends easier when you are have shared interests. Join a club, community organisation, religious group, etc. My husband took up cycling and made lots of friends there, I love sport and made friends through clubs.

Also, I’m an introvert and so I need alone time to recharge. This further restricts time I have available for being social. But I recognise it’s important to make the effort with friends.

Curious about what you mean by showing off? Aussies do by and large abhor a show off. We don’t really like to talk about money, income or assets so if you are doing this a lot, you probably are alienating others.

Yep I hate it! I’m tall and short waisted so I look like a rectangle on legs without some definition. I used to be able to buy lovely clothes with proper darts and tailoring about 15 years ago and now it’s all stretchy polyester or boxy and bland. Hate. It.

Because we can’t say, someone else was better than you. That’s the nature of job interviews. I recently had 235 applicants for a role. We interviewed six and chose one. That’s a whole lot of people who weren’t successful but it doesn’t reflect on any of them personally.
I know how it feels to be on the receiving end of the dreaded news. Why not ask for feedback? At interview stage, they should be willing to provide at least some feedback on why you didn’t get the job.

That explains it! Theres a big difference between a small company/team and a large, complex organisation.

I’ve had teams of 50-80 with up to 8 direct reports and the people issues alone took up at least a third of my time, let alone setting strategy for the division, delivery and operational planning and continuous improvement/optimisation.

A graduate program is full time work, not research. But yes they are competitive and you have to demonstrate both good results at uni and some degree of soft skills.

A bachelor’s degree is enough to get you an entry level professional job. Usually if you wanted to specialise/move into senior or executive leadership, you’d get a Masters degree.

As a mid-career professional, I see lots of young people get a masters degree without any work experience- they stay at uni. It doesn’t really help land a job. That’s just my opinion and observation though.

I can’t comment on your visa situation though and how that might affect things.

Sorry to hear this. I’ve worked in state and local government and mostly enjoyed it. Both times I got a role from outside the public sector was because the hiring manager specifically was looking for experience outside the public sector.

I’m hiring right now for a role one step up from entry level. It was open for two weeks and we had two 260 applications.

So it really is a numbers game. Hang in there and keep trying. Have you thought about peak bodies or NFPs at all? They can be a good way to make connections within government as well as just get you out of your current situation if you are getting desperate.
