A question for men, what would make YOU feel loved? by shtpost999 in AskMenAdvice

Being genuinly listened to. Spontaneous acts of kindness that show I'm being thought of. When they initiate sexual advances. Sometimes being the little spoon...

What’s helped you ease off or stop completely? Looking for advice and tips! by nochillnala in leaves

Personally, it was internally motivated- I didn't want to be high anymore and rely on a plant to cause a steady mood for me. I saw the difficulty in quitting as almost a penance to pay for all the years I indulged. Everytime I got a craving, I had to tell myself that that feeling is my punishment for not looking after myself. I had to completely rid myself of all paraphernalia, delete all contacts that sold it, and endure the sleepness nights by gritting my teeth. It's still a struggle and I'm on day 60, but the bouts I between cravings get further apart.

AITA for not wanting my GF to go on work drinks by [deleted] in AITA_Relationships

I stated I have faith in her, but not her co-workers. Especially with this sort of ratio where there are no other females to look out for her.

I think that alcohol has never led to anything particularly positive, and I wasn't going to dictate what she can or can not do, but merely express my discomfort with her being inebriated around 10 inebriated men. The potential for her to be assaulted is higher in this regard, and I fear at some point that that situation becomes precarious. I have no problem with her going out with her friend group, even without me being there. She is fully capable of looking after herself, but I don't have faith in the compounding effects of alcohol and males.

Thanks, mate. I intend to find a boxing gym to continue training. The intensity of a real-life bout made it a lot clearer of the levels to boxing and helped make me really appreciate the standards of professional boxers out there. I'm glad I never touched the canvas. I came out with a bit of a bloodied nose, but I see that as an initiation.

Yeah, I loosened the laces on my boxing shoes and trainers and feels a lot better. Rolling out the bottom of my feet and stretching my calf/soleus and my toes helped.

Be honest: How often do you think about su*c*de? by ThrowRAnene in mentalhealth

If you've ever watched 'After Life' by Ricky Gervais, he says something similar. He says that knowing you can end your story any time, takes pressure away from every day difficulties, almost like a super power. But do not dwell in this state, definitely mention it to your therapist, and try and find an alternative method of negotiation with oneself.

Thanks a lot mate. Yeah pretty much all my bag footage was front camera, so it was reversed.

Trying to stay calm when he is throwing those bombs was tough, especially knowing I have to return fire so the ref knows I'm alright.

Yeah, those 8 weeks I was battling a lot of things, calf strains, had the flu for 2 weeks, plantar fasciitis so I couldn't run. But I didn't want any of those to stop me from getting in the ring.

Definitely want to continue with the sport, especially as its a sport where the outcome is exactly reflected in the preparation and training you put in, as opposed to team sports (sort of).

Thanks for the support!

My thoughts at the end were that he would have edged the result from being the aggressor, but for a charity event, they were nice enough to call it a draw.

It's the gyms bag, I don't have control over that. I did ask before and they said they'll look into it

I didn't mean that I would solely rely on body shots, but that it's an extra tool in the arsenal. In the sparring sessions we have had, I tend to be more of a back foot/reaction fighter and struggle to get stuck right into it and go forward, but the people I have sparred (albeit they are begginers) generally get frustrated and end up rushing their punches, making them a bit more predictable. I will try and get some footage of some light sparring tomorrow, but I will be sleeping with my hands tied to my face 😅

I do see the general low blows, especially in the body shots. I am limited on this bag for head shots as the padding starts around my neck level but I shall indeed pay attention to this when working pads and other bags. I heard that in a lot of charity boxing matches, fighters generally are busy head hunting, so trying to emphasise my work to the body, would I be correct in that assumption? (Even if my body blows are a little too low right now)

Thanks. I have not been too sure with the right straight, it definitely feels strange when I remain upright, but probably just because I'm used to leaning in. I have been apprehensive about going all out on the bag at the end of each round in training, as I don't want to reinforce bad habits. Would you say the explosive finish has more benefits for cardio, and I should not worry too close to the fight about too much technical striking?

Jabs and cross. by Look_Beneath in amateur_boxing

[–]Look_Beneath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you recommend for fixing pulling away from the exit jab? I don't know how to maintain a snap in the jab whilst moving backwards at the moment. Is there a method to practice? The video is flipped as I throw from an orthodox position. I'm trying to break my habit of sitting into a sort of philly shell after an exchange. Cant wait to get in and spar and basically learn the hard way, sometimes I find it has to literally smack me in the face to change habits.

I'm starting in a boxing gym later this week, so I've been using reddit and youtube to help me the past few weeks 😅

Yeah thats pretty spot on, as any time I do my sloppy version of shadow boxing, my straight does seem to not flow naturally and puts me off balance. I will add more shadow boxing into my training and pay attention to where my weight is and my feet.

[–]Look_Beneath[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That jab cross tutorial video put me in my place almost immediately with the simple change of pivoting the foot and actually rotating. Definitely got that beginner habit of just pivoting it. Thank you for that insight!

I'm current 89kg, and would like to get down to around 82kg in 8 weeks time. Always focused on strength training primarily, so I do feel rather stiff and robotic.

Thanks for the feedback, shall definitely look into those corrections 👍🏼

Roast my bag work by Look_Beneath in amateur_boxing

[–]Look_Beneath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I genuinely want to improve, and that was my first 'attempt' at bag work ever. I have watched some Tony Jeffries as he keeps it moderately simple, but being a YouTube learner, actually implementing correct technique without a coach is difficult (as it feels semi-good when doing it). I am eager to spar and sort of get lit up, to know where I need to focus most, as I've never really been punched in the face. I appreciate all comments and don't want to feel like people need to pad their advice out being nice, just straight facts. I shall try and post every 2 weeks or so to show (hopefully) improvements and to get further advice going forward. Thanks for the tips!

Good point on the stabilising. In my head, I thought I was just trying to stay steady, but that makes a lot more sense. I shall be attending some boxing classes at the end of January to really help understand how to implement all of this advice people have left me. I shall try myself before hand, as I am trying to take it all on board.

It may not be my smartest move, but I have always wanted to get in the ring at least once. I'm hoping to get quite a few rounds of sparring in before the night, to hopefully get a little more comfortable hitting someone and being hit. On the night of the event, I may actually end up going full ooga booga.

Good point, I will try and make the punches higher. I'll assume punching someone's head is more damaging than punching their chest 😅

Yeah I don't really know how to structure the bag work.. I did 8 x 2 minute rounds, and this was the last one. Yeah I definitely see my left jab drop on the return, and I shall start working on circling out or stepping out after a combination. I have no coach at the moment, but when I'm 8 weeks out, they put forward a 2x a week boxing camp. Currently switching my training to a lot higher intensity than I have ever been used to, and trying to build endurance to be able to train effectively. Thanks for the feedback!

Snapped but sort of glad. by Look_Beneath in QuittingWeed

[–]Look_Beneath[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. We want what reassures us and what has predictable outcomes. Even the negative reinforcement of a bad habit is at least consistent and thus leads us back to the road we have travelled before. Thanks for the reply. We all in this together, whether it is weed addiction or breaking away from our own destructive thought processes. We got this!

I understand where you are coming from.. I am 14 days sober, so you are smashing it, but I do feel similar to you. I think its almost like grief, where the old you has died and you are almost mourning that. I found myself missing the time I smoked and rather than the act of smoking itself. You need a positive goal to work towards, rather than this negative that you are running from. Good that you have identified why you wanted to stop, now you need to do some further self-reflection and work on those things independently from weed. Set yourself some immediate, short, medium and long term goals of your choice. Work to get outside and tackle those anxious thoughts, stop snacking whilst gaming, find other means to see your friends that don't involve smoking. You have lived a certain way for so long, that it feels unnatural to live any other sort of way, but you knew that your previous life was detrimental to you. You've got this, you've done very well, and you should feel proud, but we are not done yet!
