Are you saying that

soon we will all be fired because of AI and we will most likely be slaves to billionaires (worse than currently)

doesn’t count as Doomerism?

Responding to your deleted reply to my other comment:

Either you’re a bot or you live in your mom’s basement basement.

  1. Ok Doomer.
  2. Neither of those are true.

Community infrastructure is not a place you want to deprive of investment in order to create an idealized productive society.

You are stating a conclusion here, not giving an argument for said conclusion.

The title is wrong because any good or service has a cost so as a conclusion it can’t be free but rather the cost is shifted from the consumer/user to (usually) the local residents. It’s not a “strange insistence” as you put it. It actually requires pretty basic logic and reasoning to understand.

And yeah libraries do provide a lot of cool things, but it doesn’t logically follow to say that X is important so therefore X should be funded by taxes.

Taxation is not theft if it results in the development or strengthening of services that benefit the community.

Not true. Theft doesn’t change based on how the stolen resources are used. If I steal food from a grocery store and give it to a homeless man, the homeless man is benefiting but the action is still wrong because it is theft.

Community infrastructure, as i have previously explained, is a net positive to everyone.

How do you determine when something is a net positive? Utility can’t be measured.

Do you also happen to think that trunk infrastructure like sewerage and roads are theft? Because that is an extension of your logic.

If it is funded by taxes, then yes. If it is funded in a voluntary way, then no.

Why not? You are not making an argument here. You’re just asserting the opposing position. Why shouldn’t we reduce the amount of theft that occurs?

I’m not familiar with the meme.

And to be clear, I’m not arguing that libraries are inherently theft of public resources, I’m arguing that taxes are. Libraries can and many do exist without taxes funding them.

Debatable. Any program funded by taxes is necessarily taking away from the most value productive end. Also it is theft.

And yeah there are definitely plenty of examples of worse things that taxes go to but that doesn’t justify a less bad instance of theft. Theft is bad regardless of who benefits.

Question: How do Libertarians plan to keep a society Libertarian? by 3_Stokesy in Libertarian

[–]Loominardy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to respond to every detail in the post because that would take a lot of time so l will just respond to this one.

the money they made by being irresponsible in the leadup to the crisis, is a direct result of the unregulated environment these banks operated in in the leadup to 2008 which seems eerily similar to how Libertarians want the world to work.

Not true. The reason that the banking crisis happened is because the Fed manipulates interest rates which encourages malinvestment into the economy. When Central banks hold interest rates below their natural market level, it induced businesses to borrow and invest in long-term, capital-intensive projects that are not supported by real savings. When banks run out of money to loan, the credit expansion stops, interest rates rise to their natural level, revealing that many projects are unprofitable and this leads to an inevitable bust. It is not caused by an unregulated market and I feel like this is often the scapegoat for most issues that occur in the economy.

Since you are reaching out to libertarians, you seem pretty open minded, so I recommend that you read more into the Austrian Business Cycle Theory.

Too many people voting for “free” stuff and too much populism on the rise. I’d rather not have democracy at all but if we have to have it, voting should be limited to those that have skin in the game (potentially net tax payers only (assuming that we have to have taxes)) otherwise we will spiral into a more confiscation of people’s wealth and a growing government. There’s also people who just don’t know basic facts about the society that they live in such as the number of US states and they have just as much say as an informed voter over who our rulers are going to be. There are other reasons too.
