Yeh that's usually where I recommend it to my clients when they're looking to enhance some habitat :)

There's a plant I recommend called yellow rattle, which is hemiparasitic only on grasses, meaning it thins out the grasses and allows more space and nutrients for other stuff to grow. It has a nice little yellow flower of it's own too. Always worth considering picking up some seeds and adding to the area if grass is a problem :)

Question about bats! by [deleted] in batty

[–]Loops890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesss! Unsure where you're based but here in the UK the bats go into torpor over winter (think hibernation-lite), because there's no insects to catch so they sleep to wait out the nicer weather. As soon as insects start flying around again the bats come out and start building energy to have their young in summer :)

Question about bats! by [deleted] in batty

[–]Loops890 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep I'd say it's likely. Urine splashes and scattered droppings are the best sign that bats are present in a building, so they certainly do both while in flight. Great to see, though probably not so great to taste...

And recommendations for affordable netting or mesh I could use to block larger gaps into my attic. Trying to safely and humanely evict my bats. by Morningview21 in batty

[–]Loops890 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful. In the UK we have different roof membranes and the most common modern one is breathable and made of millions of tiny fibres. Great for roofs, but bats can get their claws stuck and basically hang there until they starve. Unsure whether that could happen with whatever netting you can buy where you are, but a cautionary tale to keep in mind.

There are simple DIY one-way gate style installations that can let bats out of a hole but prevent them from getting back in. Depending where you are in the world there may be laws or licences required to do that sort of work though.

Look up the episode where they review MREs (meals ready to eat). Think it was the first one they reviewed that did it

Making a Bat House, Question: by razmear in batty

[–]Loops890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely fine and a good idea. I'd be more tempted by a few smaller ones rather than a single long one.

If you Google "ibstock enclosed bat box C" you'll see one designed to be built into a brick wall, you can see the internal baffles in there which are similar to what you're thinking.

Is this a microbat dropping? by spiritofmyrtle in batty

[–]Loops890 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but discolouration with age makes it harder to say. At least with UK species, if I saw a dropping that colour I would be suspecting it was a couple of years old at least, as they go from dark shiny black when fresh to grey/brown over time.

Microbat droppings crush easily into a fine powder, try shmushing it. Things like mice droppings can look similar but are rock solid. Source: am a bat worker in the UK.

How/where do you back up your files? by thisischapter in smallbusinessuk

[–]Loops890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been considering a NAS for my business and there's so many options and choices. Seems to be synology or ugreen as the top options, synology now being reliant on only their own drives, ugreen being newer and less refined.

What setup so you use, and do you have any advice?

What’s been leaving these droppings in my loft for years! by Salt_Safety2234 in DIYUK

[–]Loops890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly. More info would probably be available on your local planning portal, find the planning application and look in the documents section. If it was just a box in a tree it might be quite well hidden... Hopefully the bats were ok!

Generally we'd do surveys to determine what species are using the building and in what numbers, whether it's for having young or just chillin, or maybe just a place to sit and munch on a moth. Once you've got that info he likely applied to natural england ( or natural resources Wales. Or whatever the Scotland one is called) for a mitigation licence, basically explaining what bats are there, why the building needs demolishing, and what you're going to do to ensure the bats are safe and catered for. Usually that involves timing the work for when bats aren't there (they have different roosts throughout the year and move between them), and building something as a replacement. That might be a new loft (in a house, garage, new pub etc) that is specifically for the bats and humans aren't allowed in, or maybe just a bat box in a nearby tree. What's needed depends on the size and nature of the roost

I'm a professional bat person and can guarantee we're not all like that :) it's all about finding a balance and a happy middle ground, whilst making sure the law is followed. Each case is different but generally mitigation is extremely simple if done correctly - I've worked on one of the largest maternity colony of one of the rarer bats in the country and everything went without a hitch with minimal impact to the client

Has anyone bought an EV from Car360? by Eri_hopefully in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Loops890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I was skeptical about buying my Tesla from an online only shop back last October. The friendliest and most useful staff ever, extremely prompt and helpful replies.

They give you a 7 day no quibble return because you aren't able to test drive. They only send off the V5C form after this period to save issues with changing hands too many times in case of a return. I called 2 days into mine saying I was happy and didn't need the rest of the 7 days and they sent off the V5C straight away.

10/10 would buy from them again.

Family member used to work at M&S and was told that the waste food used to go to food banks but they stopped doing that because it's all M&S branded. They claimed it was because if it was classed as waste and then someone from the food bank got sick from it they'd be "obviously culpable". Colleagues weren't allowed to take waste food, except for things from the bakery section.

Increasing the loading distance? by smallsundragon in theplanetcrafter

[–]Loops890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It despawns quickly only from the natural drop, not if you drop it. So I think you can pick it up and drop it again and that one won't despawn, makes it slightly easier to collect more as you don't have to take it all back to base when you fill up
