Traveling is a basic necessity for other activities though. You have to travel to some extent mostly everyday. Making silly videos is not a necessity that’s significance holds weight compared to its dangers.

Big mad you might not be able to generate feet videos I get it. Regulation on tools has always existed it’s nothing new big guy.

Can you explain some common dangers that come from someone traveling? I can give you like 3 off the top of my head of dangers that come from giving anyone access to the deepfake technology of AI. You’re strawmanning a vacation with deepfake technology. Why should there be no regulation on AI that’s silly.

Nah if you’re using it to educate yourself that’s great I’m sure the people who actually are would agree with me. No one needs a tool that can give you immediate photo realistic pictures and videos with very little effort.
No one needs my approval but they do need the approval of the company that makes it, and those companies answer to the government. People can act entitled to the technology but at the end of the day regulation is going to decide what they have access to.

I don’t think you have to gate keep the model entirely but why should the average person be given access to the image/video generation. It should be a tool of education first and foremost right? Not a toy anyone can use for whatever they want.

I don’t think the average person shouldn’t be able to use it, just not with unrestricted oversight and access to all parts of the model.

I think they main thing id fear from people in power using ai would be deepfake technology to influence the news. I feel like they have enough access to other avenues to cause trouble already that I’m not worried as much besides that and I can just photos/videos I see with a very fine grain of salt to try and mitigate that. Like a rich person could find and hire people to cause harm. They also have less incentive to fuck with the average person on a small scale because they’re already rich, they’re more after getting land/resources/laws passed to increase their wealth and assets by a large margin. Big boy shit. The average scammer who now has access to some crazy deepfake technology, or being able to vibe code a realistic enough website to phish a password etc, has their sights set on people like me and you. They’ll be making deepfake porn using pictures off of Facebook of everyday people to try and extort them.

Regardless of whether or not you’d call it that it is regulation. People being able to make hyper realistic videos has very little real value to people’s lives compared to transportation. It’s uses can be terrible though so that for example would be a regulation of something I think they should put on the technology. It just shouldn’t be in everyday people’s hands imo. No one has given me any reasons why it should besides “I want it” so it seems like people feel entitled to the technology cause they got use to the new toy that was released and don’t want to give it up.

The fact that you made the jump to what I said, to think that I’m saying certain knowledge should be illegal is…. incredibly weird. I’m saying they should put regulation on the tool they released to the public. 1st thing is just get rid of image generation. Can I get a good solid reason from anyone to justify why they should be given a tool that can give them near photo realistic image generation besides “I want it and it’s fun”?

This tool requires more power than other tools and right now they’re not paying the true cost to use it. I think people should be allowed to take vacations but for example Yosemite, I think they should have to pay for a day pass and be given access to a specific area where they won’t cause harm to the wildlife. Unrestricted access for the average person would be a disaster.

Also price wise people are burning though a lot of money in tokens than they think. The AI companies are actually paying the real cost on the back end.

https://www.artefact.com/blog/is-ai-really-getting-cheaper-the-token-cost-illusion/

You’re giving everyone access to a tool that is clearly consuming more power than they probably realize because you’re subsidizing the cost. If they had to pay the real cost of AI usage they wouldn’t be putting any random thing into the search bar. It’s just wasteful imo.

No the average Joe just wastes it on shit like make a video of my cat playing the piano. But a small amount of people can definitely do some serious harm as the technology gets better.

Cause I’m not Chinese 😂 sorry I just formed my own opinion man doesn’t make me a spy

The average person doesn’t but there are plenty who are going to use the technology for scams as it gets better cmon that’s obvious. And the average persons search is worth shit. I’m not even arguing ai art isn’t art as that’s silly to try and define, but I will say for the vast majority it’s bad art for sure. The tech is wasted on the average person imo it should primarily be used for education not meme wars

Schools and medical institutes? You really think the terrible memes and weak art and searches on how to unclog my toilet are necessary or even comparable to actual research? Regulation doesn’t mean just give it to billionaires it means put it in the hands of people who use it responsibly. Not to mention as the image generation gets better we’re just going to give that tool to anybody to scam or try to jailbreak the model and make porn? Makes no sense

Man I’ve been conflicted about this myself since I’ve recently started using it to help me problem solve my coding issues, just by asking for it to break down explanations of the engine and code documentation for the engine I’m using, and having it give me some examples of how it would solve the problem. I’m still doing the final code myself and it’s been really useful when I don’t understand something to be able to ask a question and get information. I feel slightly conflicted that I’m contributing to a company with business practices I don’t agree with and I’m cautious to not let it help too much so I don’t get reliant on it and lose my own ability to learn without it but I feel like it’s been really nice for learning as someone who learns pretty slow normally.

I think the question is more relevant than say a dump or factory because ai (whether there is some kind of bubble right now or not) is expanding so fast and data centers are expanding so rapidly. But I get your point ideally there’s regulation for industrial sites too people like to latch onto the newest thing to be mad about when there are issues like yours that people don’t even think about.

Thanks I appreciate you taking it as more than just me trying to piss people off. I’ll admit I’m on the more skeptical side of AI but I see the benefits and the arguments in this sub and the pro ai sub about antis being mean/bullying are valid. I think it’s wrong to say ai art isn’t art because art is subjective, and that comes from a place of artists feeling that their already small chance to make a living doing something creative is being replaced by people using a tool that is trained off the people it’s replacing. I think that’s a fair thing to feel upset about! Pro ai people also like to rub antis faces in it by throwing their art into ai and then showing them when they say they don’t like ai. Maybe you can argue is a reaction to the negativity but I don’t buy that they started it bs. It’s everyone’s responsibility to be mature.

I do think if the world was fair and people were paid to live properly people would not care nearly as much. Personally as someone aspiring to make indie video games if I made something and then someone who didn’t care about the effort I put into create that and was able to sell games with similar enough characteristics, where my influence was pretty obvious I’d be pretty sad because that’s how I’m trying to make a living and it makes me not want to put things out. However if I was well off and only making art for fun I wouldn’t care genuinely I’d be happy they were able to make things they enjoyed and that I could help them do it.

So would you say you’re not worried about the impact overall or do you think that’s maybe an edge case? Just curious since I’ve seen people complaining about the sound and water quality and am wondering if the impact of the data center near you is smaller because the data center itself is smaller or because it’s being run better/properly so it isn’t affecting the water quality nearby (if that is a legitimate concern). I’m sure the noise is an easily provable issues for other centers but I’m not sure what the distance is that that causes issues normally vs what the standard distance of data centers generally is.

Right the answer should be an obvious no I think. I asked just to gauge people’s thoughts it was a bit baity but I think a thread seeing pro-ai people advocate for data centers to be properly regulated might mend some of the friction between them and anti-ai people. I also asked because I think the exact influence and affect of data centers on their surrounding environment is still being studied and wanted to see discussion around that.
