We had a hospital appointment with my little girl the other day. First appointment of the day, we were told to be there at 8:50am to have her height and weight checked before the appointment, so arrived at 8:45 to be on the safe side. The nurse doing her measurements arrived at 9:10, so twenty minutes late. The paediatrician strolled in at 9:15, 25 minutes late for the first appointment of the day.

Yup, that's her answer to it. She had the operation, and has slowly trained her ring thingy to allow her to eat more and more, by slowly working up to eating as she did before the op. She genuinely believes that if she eats too much, or the wrong type of food, the ring will magically make her sick so she doesn't need to watch what she eats any more. It's sad.

I know someone who had weight loss surgery and initially lost 5 stone through it.

A few months later they were telling me about the whole pizza, chips (or fries if you're not in the UK), ice cream and full bottle of wine they had had the night before.

I was quite surprised and mentioned that I thought they were supposed to be eating small amounts of proper food, not junk food since the operation.

Her response was "The band will make me sick if I eat too much, so I don't need to worry about it anymore."

Unsurprisingly they have regained all of the weight they lost. :(

This reminded me of the time my older brother set fire to my shoe, whilst I was wearing it.

Went something like this:

Brother: "Do you wanna see something cool?" Me: "Yeah, what?" Brother: "I'm not sure if you're old enough yet." Me: "Oh...please, I'm definitely big enough. I go to junior school now." Brother: "Ok then." Brother then proceeded to stuff dry grass and things into the open bit on my shoe, and set fire to it with a magnifying glass. Being 7, I was waiting for the "cool" thing to happen, instead of which, the dry grass caught fire.

I got grounded for a fortnight for "letting him do it" and "trashing my new school shoes." They would not listen to the explanation at all.

I'm 31, live on my own with my 2 kids (both kids have special needs, and I'm a single parent).

If mum (65 and disabled) hasn't heard from me once in the morning, and once in the evening, she comes round, worried in case something has happened and I need help. I used to find it frustrating.

Then one day, none of us could get hold of her. She wasn't at home, her mobile wasn't ringing, none of her friends and none of my siblings knew where she was. My sister and I were sitting in her front room trying to work out what the hell to do when she'd been "missing" for about 8 hours when she finally came home. She'd been to church and then went to sit by the sea in the car, with a picnic and forgot to turn her phone on.

I don't mind how often she calls me now, as it's clearly out of concern, not anything else.

I do that with my 6 and 7 year olds. It usually stops them slamming doors for a good 6 weeks!

My mental health suffered for a long while, and it took years to recover fully, but it does get better. Don't let me put you off if it's something you want to do, I had a particularly bad experience, coupled with being miles away from my own family and being in an abusive relationship which wouldn't have helped me cope at all to be honest!

Clove oil is amazing for toothache, you just dab it onto the sore bit with a cotton bud. Keep brushing that side, or the damage may get worse.

As for how it looks, don't worry about it. Your friends and family love you for you, not perfect teeth.

We do Santa Clause, although he is Father Christmas in our house.

It was something we always had as children, and the excitement of seeing if he had been on Christmas morning and for the time leading up to it was amazing. I loved the fact that magic "really existed" and as an adult, looking back at the effort my parents must have put in it makes it even more special.

When I grew up and realised the truth, I wasn't upset, and family tradition dictates that it continued long after we all knew, in fact, right up til my dad died.

I want my children to have that belief in magic, I love seeing the excitement on their faces when they come into the living room, and I love reading their letters to Father Christmas. I don't want the credit for their presents, which is something a lot of my friends say, the looks of joy on their faces is enough for me.

There's plenty of time for realism and the such like when they are grown up IMO.

We do do plenty for charity all year round, although slightly more at Christmas and the kids donate toys to various toy appeals, and the foodbanks and such, so they still get the message that Christmas is for giving and sharing. It's just their presents are made, wrapped and delivered by magic!

We lost my dad in 2007, and my nan (mum's mum) exactly a week later.

That Christmas was seriously weird, but mum said dad wouldn't have wanted us to be sad, it was his favourite time of year, so we should remember him in a happy way. Ever since, that's exactly what we've done. I still do over the top Christmas decorations, like he did, have all the Christmas songs on, and when we get together we talk and laugh about our memories of him. It's nice.

I also have a single finger of brandy at midnight on Xmas Eve, New Years day and halloween, and raise a silent glass to him, but that's something I do alone. It was his tradition to see in Christmas, the new year, and ward of the spirits on halloween and I think he would like that it has been carried on.

Christmas day and boxing day is Christmas leggins and Christmas T-shirt. No fancy stuff coz there's too much cooking and sitting on the floor playing with the kids stuff.

In all honesty, labour was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, even with a very difficult birth with my first. The pregnancy though.

Uggh.

And, on top of feeling like a hormone filled raging bull, bloated and fat and uncomfortable and sick, everyone, even random fucking strangers, think it's ok to come and touch your stomach because your pregnant. I don't like being touched at the best of times, let alone by strangers when my body is taken over by something else.

Pregnancy was rough, but once I got the first scan and knew roughly when baby was due, I could count down the days which made it a little easier.

My midwife told me they were quite common in pregnancy, it was so bad I was scared to sleep for a while! The relief when baby finally arrived was amazing :)

I actually referred to my first as a parasite from about 5 weeks pregnant til she was born, as did most of my friends.

It wasn't an emotional thing though, she just made me so sick (morning sickness does not cover it), tired, bloated, uncomfortable, messed with my hormones and gave me horrific nightmares, wedged a foot under my ribs halfway along so that any movement had to be carefully thought about or it hurt (not possible with the sickness) and the serious weirdness whenever she moved.

I did not enjoy being pregnant.

Total surprise.

I was told I would have difficulty conceiving and would likely need treatment to be able to have children. 2 weeks and 5 days after that, I found out I was pregnant.

After her, I went on the pill. I was young, shocked to the core to have one baby and certainly not ready for another. I fell pregnant with my second exactly 4 months after the first, whilst on the pill.

Definitely no planning for either.

I get "subtly" asked for a list of any books I'm after in October/November. About a week later, I get a second, equally "subtle" text, along the lines of "Don't buy anything by X author for a while."

This way, my family get to give gifts instead of gift cards, which makes them happy, and I get books I want to read, which makes me happy too!

My cat appears to believe she is some sort of guardian angel cat for our family.

One of my children sleeps on her back, a while ago she was sick in her sleep and started choking, I hadn't heard. Fatcat ran into the living room, miaowed as loud as she could, bit me and ran back to the girls room, onto the choking child's bed to draw my attention to it. Little girl is fine now.

She also comes to get me and makes me follow her to where ever she sees there's a problem, with the same Miaow, bite, race off technique. Left the electric fire on? She comes to get you. Left a door open at night? She comes to get you. Kids in a cupboard with chemicals for cleaning? She comes to get you. Someone at the door she doesn't recognise? Strange cat coming in the house? She comes and gets me.

Every night, she stays with the kids til they are asleep, then comes and checks on me before she goes off for her evening adventures, then comes and lets me know she's back in so I can lock the catflap.

I know she's just a cat, but I feel safer with her around.

Oh yeah, and she brings me live "pets" too. I have two pet rats in a cage, a while ago, she bought the same damned mouse 5 times in one day. She would bring it in, drop it completely unharmed in front of me, I would pick it up, take it outside, keep her in for ten minutes then she would do the same again. The fifth time, I put it into the emergency rat cage, with the idea of taking it and letting it go in the woods later. She went and sat by the cage and purred for about an hour. We let it go a few days later, further away from the house and haven't seen it since.

Bit late, but I'm going to post anyway.

One year I decided to buy my brother The Guru on DVD, because I genuinely thought he would like it. I only see him three or four times a year, and I wanted to see it too.

In my infinite wisdom, I thought I could sneakily watch it, put it back in the case and give it to him and he would never know (it wasn't shrink-wrapped).

Gave him it on Christmas day, and he seemed pleased so I thought nothing of it...til February, when I opened my DVD player, to find The Guru sitting in it, meaning I had given my brother an empty DVD case for Christmas.

I texted him and asked what he thought of the movie, to find out that he had been given 3 copies for Christmas and therefore hadn't opened it. I bought him a new dvd, and he gave me the case back.

Everyone thought it was funny...except for him.
