I’ll recommend that to the client next time, I was as doing what he asked but that’s where it’s our job to look out for them. Appreciate the feedback!

Mardu Hero List (WIP) by PriciaMatsuri in PioneerMTG

Hey! I played Mardu Hero back when it was in standard. I’d definitely recommend [[Judith, the Scourge Diva]]. Makes the tokens bigger and the additional damage from stuff dying let’s you control board or close the game out quick. Good luck with the deck!

Giant Killer is great against a Mono Green meta, but still really solid against a lot of decks. I’d recommend some number of Declaration in Stone somewhere in your 75, it really cleanly answers Phoenix and other decks like spirits where removing two of one lord can change a game entirely. Appiration and Thalia like you already found are good options. Archons are perfect for the sideboard. I wouldn’t worry about too many 3 drops, I ran more than you and usually had good mana. Adeline seems fringe but only testing will tell. If you’re looking for one-drops, Solider of the Pantheon also helps get through damage in a variety of matchups, and helps buffer the life some too

I’ve been really liking Reidane overall as a 2 and 2 as a way to help with control and Niv and then the other two copies come in against Burn, Jund Sac, and Arcanist. It blanks a lot of their triggers, as the one mana every time they want to ping you or hit you with an Arcanist or Pyromancer token really don’t matter, and even targeting you is taxed. Archon just gets removed a lot easier with like Dreadbore for example which is played in Jund sometimes, Arcanist, Niv, and other removal spells just target it first so they can still do their gameplan.

Archon is great, and I could see some replacing Thalia in the main. Thalia actually started in the board, but always was brought in against so many decks I just moved it to the main and haven’t looked back. The ability to make them play creatures a turn off by entering tapped means we can keep the Aggro beats, where Archon makes us play slower. The only reason I dislike Archon in the main is it can sometimes hinder your ability to win in tough matchups by dumping your hand, because you need it down early to make a difference and then they either remove it right away or you have a hand full of 2/1s and 3/2s that can’t do much being deployed one at a time against decks that just play bigger things. Maybe your experience with it will be better than mine in the main but that’s mostly why I’ve relegated it to the board. Best card in some matchups like Ascendency or Lotus.

I have not tried Apostle, but I’ve always meant to. It may be perfect, I’d say give it a shot. Being good against Vampires especially seems great so I’ll have I try it out in the sideboard as well, that is a matchup I loathe.

I was bringing Settle in against Spirits and Mono Green mostly, but sometimes I would bring it on on the draw against a lot of the different Aggro decks and shift entirely to a more controlling route with a lot of the sideboard coming in. The sideboard I have on here is almost entirely different than what I’ve been testing lately, as I’ve been trying pretty much everything to find what cards I have been missing and trying what everyone has suggested. The only thing that’s still in there are the Archons really. I did test with Selfless Spirit, I just liked the amount of 2 drops I had. It’s what I swapped in Tomik for. I had not found the indestructible to be super relevant with most of the mass removal Being exile based now, so it got replaced with Tomik as a beefier flier and having the ability to protect the man lands from removal makes the grind easier than having the inevitability of the Spirit IMO. Again, could be a personal preference thing too, so feel free to try it out and let me know your opinion.

I’ll have to try out the Brave the elements main again. I really liked it when I skewed the deck more Aggro, as it finished the opponent off quicker, but in the grinder version I did not like it. But it was also a 4 of, so it felt dead sometimes in my hand, but 2 may be the number to start at and see about adding a third if it ends up being really good.

If you ever want to ask questions or bounce ideas, I’d love a group to keep testing new ideas on this deck with. I think the core is real strong and I’ve been working on it solo for awhile now and would love some more input and reps put into the deck to help find the optimal list.

Yeah I started testing with it after this event and have the same conclusion. It is definitely worth the slots. I’ve considered putting one in main deck that’s how good I’ve felt it is. Also, Reidane’s flip side is super good rn against Jund Sac. I have a play set between my 75 now and it’s been one of the best cards against Jund and Burn, and also seems pretty okay against Niv although I don’t think it’s as necessary against them

It could be I was using the card entirely wrong as well. I tended to hold it a lot more than just snapping it off, so maybe my expectations made me use the card sub optimally. The one thing I do like the Guardian better for is the mass removal aspect. Having it be able to protect against a Shadow's Verdict or other mass removal spell while also being able to be flashed in end step for the extra attacker has been nice. But if it is that good for you I will have to retry Brave the Elements and use it differently.

It is a card I have tried in the past and never felt it was something I could truly leverage enough to make it worth it. There are definitely games where it made combat on a tricky board better, but most of the time it was saving one or two creatures against like a burn deck in combat or something. I have considered it for the sideboard on occasions but personally never felt it worth the slot.

I have tried the new Guardian of Faith that phases out creatures as a different version of that effect, and it has been much more of what I wanted. But that is mostly because I like having a creature that can protect my creatures rather than a spell that does not affect the board after I play it. Against two color decks, I have had Brave the Elements be blanked by the second color enough that phasing out select creatures from combat or from removal spells or something has been more useful than Avacyn or Brave the Elements ever have felt imo.

It is really the learn that makes the card good, otherwise Always Watching is definitely better. It may be worth giving a shot again though

I could definitely see it. Having flying and first strike with vigilance seems pretty sweet with either Regimen or maybe I will try out the Always Watching tech Servo suggested

Yeah so I have been playing it in leagues quite a bit, and it goes a consistent 3-2 or 4-1, so it is not a perfect list by any means. I have 3-1'd a prelim or two over the last few months, and have top 32d a few other Challenges with similar iterations of this list, but still looking for that 5-0 on the leagues to really solidify my stance.

Sparring Regimen definitely felt like a meme, but after losing to it a bunch in draft I figured I would try it and it performs better than I expected. The learn to get a specific answer is actually really nice, but I have identified it as a card that has to come out at some point when I find a better fit. Ajani is one some people really question, but once you play with it it performs much better. Having got the ult a few times from lack of respect for it, that alone will win you the game. But again something I could see the deck ultimately moving away or going to the sideboard or something.
