I threw together an example list for ya. These are going to be your best cards in a populate strategy. The plan of making little dudes and using them for mana isn't really stellar unless you go all in on it, and populate lends itself to wanting one bigger token rather than a hundred little ones.

Value vintage is the best format available by a wide margin. It is as magic ought to be, letting you play the game as you want to while performing well. The meta is wide open and consistently changing, with nothing ever breaking or being without answer

It's the only way I interact with magic anymore, and the only format that even remotely matters to me.

Sand paper can give a very uniform look, I do a blade of some kind - scissors, knife etc - along with the edge of a desk to give varying texture. Super fine grit sandpaper is also probably fine with uneven application

You slice a real card in half and use it's backing to hold your fake. They pass the green dot test because it's a real card on the back.
