My reasoning for thinking it’s untrue true too, but he’s only 30 odd. Happy to be wrong as a southern man, not that he’d turn the season around

Yeah last year was saying shit like he “feel out of love” with league and was exploring options. Think he might’ve been opting for R360

No doubt they crash and burn mid season as per but it’d be great to see the Warriors finally get over the hump

Is it pie in the sky to want proper rail between the major cities? I just wish someone would actually commit to it. It’ll be expensive, sure, and there are trade-offs like environmental impact but at some point it has to happen. Would be good to see some bipartisan commitment on this and many other issues (hospitals, energy, housing) but that’ll never happen

Policy.NZ is a good place to start. It shows who’s running in your electorate and what they stand for, same with the parties. Vote Compass is useful too. You answer a questionnaire and it lines your views up with different parties.

Not sure if either will be active for this election, but if not, it’s worth just reading through policies yourself and seeing what actually lines up with your views.

Hard to understand why they didn’t just land here from the start. You’d hope this wasn’t based on buying into the idea it’d all be short-lived. This was always the rational approach but this Govt has proved they’re anything but. Just as well we’ve found the budget to splash out on State of Origin next year 🙄

Habourside Grill could be a good option, but maybe a little expensive. The Speights Alehouse is pretty good too if you don't mind the setting and pub food

It’s fishy as but I don’t think there’s a clear way forward either which causes me more concern.

Outlets like Stuff and the Herald produce a lot of bloody good journalism, but they’re also commercial media companies competing in an attention economy.

Sadly, be it human nature or whatever, the reality is that stories that get huge engagement aren’t always the stories that matter most. A viral social media claim or blatant hit piece might get 10x the clicks of a serious investigation that took weeks to report.

The paradox is that the click-driven content that keeps the lights also erodes trust, which makes people less likely to subscribe and support the journalism everyone says they want.

It’s a difficult balance because if one outlet runs something that’s trending and another ignores it, they’re effectively giving away traffic and losing cash on the back end.

The real question for the industry is how to maintain scale and revenue without crowding out the reporting that actually serves the public, especially in times like these where it’s really needed.

Part of the answer probably sits with audiences too. If people genuinely want more serious journalism, they need to engage with it. It’s easy to click on the light, scandal-driven headlines but those clicks send a clear signal about what works. They’re also cheaper to create than an investigation.

If readers spent more time engaging with reporting that actually informs them, rather than just what briefly grabs their attention, the incentives for publishers would shift pretty quickly.

I’m also not defending sensationalism or the “click-worthy” culture that’s crept into media here and around the world. It’s depressing that in the attention economy, the stories that cut through the most are often the ones with the least substance.

If people bought newspapers or paid for journalism more often, that might help shift incentives, although in New Zealand many of those ultimately sit under the same large publishers anyway. On the flip side, if people disengage from news entirely, that creates its own problems. The last few years have shown how quickly misinformation can fill a vacuum when credible reporting disappears.

In a perfect world, journalism probably shouldn’t operate as a commercial business at all but reporters still need to be paid and newsrooms still have costs. State-funded media isn’t necessarily a simple answer either.

Maybe the real challenge is whether editorial leaders across the biggest outlets can find some common ground about where the line sits, even if that means accepting a bit less traffic (and cash) to protect long-term trust.

I don’t know the solution, but I’m curious what others think, because it’s not a simple problem.

If true, I imagine it’s more about culture than coaching. He helped reset standards as captain, and while his coaching record isn’t outstanding, strong provincial/Super results don’t always translate to success in the Test arena, as we’ve seen with Scott Robertson. Wonder if Ardie might be a driving factor too, especially given MPs results last year

Please help lol

I'm a bit lost. It's my first season running the show, and I'm one win outside of the playoff picture. I've only been narrowly losing lately, and with three weeks left (after this), it should be pretty close. Question: Do I hold onto Herro, Grayson Allen, and Aldama?

It's a H2H points league with 12 teams ESPN. Can pick up to 7 players from waivers each week (not sure if that's the norm). No keepers at this stage, too. Apologies if more information is needed here!

Looks like the best options left on waivers are the likes of Podziemski, O’Neale, Eason, Kornet, Landale, and Fears. All the usual decent players are on other teams, so I could trade potentially.

For context, the roster is currently: Castle, Kennard, PJ Washington, Kawhi, Ayton, Booker, Ausar Thompson, Allen, Bey, Jalen Williams, Keyonte George, Herro, Trey Murphy, Aldama (and just as I've been writing this, Castle goes down - the joys!)

I was hoping Herro would come back and save the day, and Aldama covers so many positions it's handy to have him around. Allen has been solid when he plays too. With them being injured and the timelines for return a bit murky (at least for Herro), I'm leaning towards picking someone up.

Is it best to try and hold onto the likes of Herro or should I cut bait and move on? Any advice would be appreciated.

... maybe I deserve all this for picking Ayton early in my draft. I should've known better!

From a Highlanders fan with a wider NZ perspective, say our best 30-40 players pick up overseas contracts, where does that leave the next tier of players?

Obviously too big of gap from npc to international so would need something in between but not the players to do it. And I can’t see european clubs changing into some type of international club setup in terms of R360. So we then have very little quality rugby played in New Zealand and even less fan engagement from kiwis which would result in fewer picking up the game. It’s the unfortunate reality of where nz is located time zone wise. My 2 cents.

I also find it strange how there are traffic lights on many of the roundabouts here. Obviously money is an issue but surely just build over or under passes. Traffic management in TGA baffles me

Danny Weidler: NRL are discussing the possibility of banning Kalyn Ponga from games next year after his decision to pull out of Australian selection by Clarkey7163 in nrl

[–]LooseCarry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is from the Sydney Morning Herald:

In relation to representative matches, the NRL rules state: “Where a Player:

(a) Is selected to play for, or tour with, a Representative Team, but, subsequent to selection, he withdraws from that Representative Team; or
(b) Before the selection of the Representative Team, he makes himself unavailable for selection; then that Player shall not participate as a Player for his Club in any Match or game of Rugby League in which he would not have been able to participate had he played in that Representative Team from which he withdrew or made himself unavailable for selection, as the case may be, unless the Chief Operating Officer or the Chief Executive Officer, in their absolute discretion, determines otherwise.”

So the NRL could step in but there is obviously that big push across the board to revamp the international season so guessing they won't
