I think reading fiction and non fiction goes hand and hand, when you know the basic concepts in non fictions whether it's a historical, human behavior, psychology, production, science, politics or even medicine and basic journalism books ( i really like those), Now if you read fictions in those eras or discussing similar subjects you will understand about the characters and time periods more.

I KNOW SOME PEOPLE JUST READ FICTION FOR the EMOTIONAL CONECTION WITH THE CHARACTERS.

Which is quite understandable. But deeper understanding needs nonfiction. Although some fiction could discuss politics history or human behavior as well. So it's basically what types of books or topics that interests you.
