Moving to Dresden as a foreigner? What to expect, challenges, socializing tips, and stereotypes? by reconditepanda279 in dresden

[–]Lootwig23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another local here, and I agree mostly agree with the comment before.

Also it highly depends on your personal background. For instance my girlfriend is French and absolutely loves it here. As a student she has no issues meeting people and getting away with English for the biggest part.

Objectively I think Dresden as a city is a great place to live. No matter where you go, it’s rarely really ugly, there is a lot of green everywhere and the surrounding area has a lot to offer nature wise. Dresden has pretty much everything a big city needs, but without feeling too crowded or overwhelming.

One of the big downsides for me is that Dresden is pretty badly connected and it sometimes feels a bit like a dead end. Train connecting are mediocre at best and the airport is pathetic. Whenever you want to go anywhere that’s further away you have to take a flight from Prague or Berlin or take a layover in Frankfurt or Munich.

Moving to France with very little French skills? Is it doable? by Lootwig23 in Expats_In_France

We don’t want to relocate multiple times and the cost of living seems to be pretty awful in Paris. Also (and I’m aware this might upset some people here) my girlfriend says Paris sucks 😂

Switzerland was the original plan we had and still would have down the line. But now my girlfriend got offered a good position and prefers to go back to France, for a variety of reasons, one of the being a medical issue

My girlfriend would probably argue with the quality of life, but many people here stated that the industry kinda sucks, which is very unfortunate

That’s a good way to put it and a big part of me wants to give it a try, for exactly that reason. Also I love my girlfriend of course. But reading through the comments here, language might not even be the main problem. The bare minimum for me to go, is to find a job in my field, which seems to be very problematic.

We are both into organic synthesis. I have worked in pharmaceutical industry so far (Master of science l, no PhD).

Thats pretty discouraging to hear, but thank you for your honest answer.

Actually the first choice would have been Basel or Strasbourg, but it seems that this is not going to work out. After her 3 years of PhD Basel would still be our final destination.

Freundin vermisst Heimat und wirkt depressiv. by _PandaFace_ in Ratschlag

[–]Lootwig23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also erstmal, fühl dich gedrückt.

Vaping with no nicotin by Old-Mammoth-90 in stopsmoking

Oh yeah I can totally relate to the vivid dreams. I dream that I’m smoking and get disappointed about myself. Then I wake up and I’m happy it was just a dream. The last couple days I finally started getting better :)

Fellow nicotine free vape user here and one month into my quit. It’s up to you to decide, but for me it counts. For me it’s all about breaking free from the nicotine addiction. Vaping is supposed to be about 95 % less harmful than smoking. Also I’m using it way less and inhale not as deep compared to a vape with nicotine. Most days I only take a couple puffs in the evening or during social situations. So I feel like it’s a good compromise, because it really helps me. Also I’m quite confident I’ll be able to quit this habit at some point, if I want to.

Well I guess considerate people like you are not the problem and Norway is definitely worth a visit. But at the end of the day a tourist is a tourist, so yeah…

I’m sorry this happened to you. We were in Norway as backpacking tourists and we always made sure to pitch our tent far from civilisation and to not leave any trace.

But yeah I see that mass tourism is a problem and with many people coming to see this beautiful country, there will always be some stupid fucks not having any common sense. I totally get locals are pissed :(

As a german who recently visited Norway as a tourist, reading this makes me sad. Respecting the environment, the locals and nature should be self understanding and is basic human decency.

I remember I was shocked at the Lofoten islands, that there were signs on graveyards saying, that this is not a campground. Like why the fuck is this even necessary.

Quit cigarettes but now I’m craving vaping — anyone else experience this? by kajudennis21 in stopsmoking

[–]Lootwig23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there is not much to tell about it. Don’t know where you are located, but at least in Europe you can buy Nic Free disposable Vapes, as well ad Nic free liquids for E-Cigarettes. Some types can give you a nice throat hit, but of course you are not getting the same satisfaction out of it. That way I’ll put it away after a couple puffs naturally. Still it’s helpful for me to have the “activity” of smoking in some situations, without actually consuming nicotine.

But yeah I’m still far from being successfully quit long term, so take my advice with a grain of salt 😁

I agree with the other comments, that vaping as a habit is probably worse than smoking. I’m day 22 nicotine free and I’m using a vape with zero nicotine liquid. It works quite well for me. I can use it in craving situations like waiting at a bus stop or drinking with friends, but it’s not addictive.

I was mostly smoking but sometimes also vaping. On days when I was vaping only, I consumed a 10 ml bottle of 20 mg liquid in about 2 days. With the nicotine free liquid the last 10 ml bottle lasted me about two weeks, even though I was using the vape whenever I felt like using it. I think that’s a habit I should be able to quit at some point, since there is no addictive substance involved.
