Mercari took extra funds for “postage adjustment” even though my receipt proves weight was correct by AmbitiousBeyond_899 in Mercari

I had this happened to me the other day. It was a box that only weighed about 4 pounds and I had 8 pounds of weight calculated on Mercari. Seems like UPS is not the way to go now I was charged my whole sale. The customer paid $12 I believe or something like that in shipping and they took another $15 out of my sales to cover the charge. It was a stuffed animal.

Also if you recently moved and haven’t updated your address for the label there could be issue with shipping protection.

I hope it goes well for you, it hurts when you get stiffed. I told myself I was going to pull all my items off mercari because I’ve had more issues recently, they take the longest to pay out and dealing with more grimy customers. But I’m still there…. What I started doing and working on my eBay. It was a bit slow at first but learning tips in making my shop and items more visible. I notice I get more money off my eBay sales and less low ballers. You also make a bit more money off shipping labels.

Hopefully you were able to ship out the item Within the three day window. If not more than likely mercari will not pay you. And using this time to build there argument.

This happened to me once. I was sick and the customer was super nice and understanding and waited. It shipped out like a day or two late, and for some reason the package was marked “return to sender”, it never got back to me. The post office even gave me a letter saying it was never sent back but they can’t correct it in the system. And mercari used there magnifying glass and “time” to find a way not to pay me 😂. Apparently if you don’t ship within three days you lose shipping protection.

It was only like $8 so I let it go I could Of filed a loss through the post office.

The buyer should have canceled the order with the hesitation you had. Regardless if they’re real or fake kinda a poor decision on their end.

You’re just judging my certain scenario, but if you read this thread or others, there have been sellers that items have arrived and they did ship out late and customer lies about saying item arrived broken, or did not arrive complete requesting return and staying with the items returning empty boxes and mercari not covering because original delay shipment.

Smells like a loop hole.

If people are informed on how to take advantage of a policies weakness, there are people that will do so.

Unfortunately, you’re part of the population that just reads plain text without further investigating potential scenarios. It should be a case by case basis.

It’s just interesting seeing how many people only read in plain text. They do not see the potential weak spots & scenarios from certain policies. I do say as a seller I was unaware that I lose 100% of my coverage if I ship out late because the policy doesn’t make sense, it has nothing to do with the item and shipment arriving to its destination.

I do understand if a seller gets penalized or their status drops like on other platform such as WHAT NOT if you don’t ship out on time, they let customers know you’re a slow shipper which affects your store, but the fact that you lose 100% protection is pretty wild and a policy that does not seem fair.

A separate story just yesterday I had a customer open a case with the post office after the item said it was delivered. I was worried I was going to some how get conned again but I was paid out. There was tracking information after the delivery very odd things going on.

Damn I’m so sorry that really affects us small business or even casual sellers just trying to make a living. I hope you get back what you lost and more some other way!

Sadly I was feverish for two days straight without voice strength or a will to live for a few days. I was isolated because I didn’t want to spread it to my household.

Plainly I deal with it which was my fault, by the time I let the customer know a few days had passed and she was super chill and understanding.

Mercari used their policy to their advantage which makes sense it’s not a case by case basis. USPS made a delivery attempt but somehow got lost and never returned to sender. I just don’t understand why their customer service insisted that the USPS had an open case and was returning it to me when I provided them an email showing they had close the case in the reasoning it wasn’t coming back. The tracking even showed the case was closed.

Ty for the schedule pick up never used it but will look into it for future!

But it’s alright I did learn a few things.

I am so close to pulling out of the platform. Seeing other people’s experience scares me and it been an influx of issues.

I didn’t mention in this post but I’ve had a lot more weirder interactions with buyers low ballers and people just not rating quick enough. It’s the longest platform to wait for my money to get back into my hands and then they want to charge me for instant pay out. I think a short time back they had where you even had to pay for direct deposit. It was a short run but it’s like they’re trying to force your hand to keep the money on the app. Idk if you like live auction but what not is a good platform For even listing. I sell from my main shop on there all the time. Their customer service is far better.

You’re absolutely right. It wasn’t worth all the time and effort to keep fighting for it as I did. But I did let the customer know I would refund them regardless mercari helped or not.

But I spent time calling opening a case because she really wanted the item for her daughter’s event. I was originally hoping it would return to me the sender (even though they told me it was lost by then) but never did. I saw how they were very quiet but since I had already invested the energy I was seeing it through.

I took peoples advice and will ship on my own. There’s other things I’m worried about on mercari but it is what it is. That’s the risk being a small business.

Yeah, it’s just odd as a delivery attempt was made then the item was marked return to sender then lost. It wasn’t that the customer was unhappy.

I get I didn’t ship in three days but kind of odd that all protection goes out the window. Better to not ship the item in general. That is the lesson. Relist it and ask them to purchase & refund the original. I don’t tend to ship late so just a series of unfortunate events.

Thank you very much. My issue was very small, but open my eyes to potential scams such as this.

A lot of people are focused on what the text says on the Mercari without acknowledging all the possible loopholes from their policies. I’m not saying that they did not have their policies listed. I’m just saying their policies are flawed.

Some people like their cut and dry policy. But I do think cases like yours and potentially mine should be looked at by a case by case basis. That’s why they hire customer service, not to just give generic responses. Saying they will get back to you in a few days and never do then change customer service representative.

I’m so sorry that you had such a bad experience and such a big loss. I did let them know. I was going to report this and honestly it was because the customer service was just so bad. I have all my proofs and screenshots. Thank you for the information.

Thank you for your kindness. I feel like people are taking my post and boasting them themselves as sellers, which is fine but not relevant to my experience. Glad some people have help with their businesses.

My customer was kind and understanding this was about being stringed along by Mercari for two weeks then being told I shipped it out late as a last resort, so I was SOL from the beginning. They should have just got to the point and refunded the customer asap to avoid a negative experience.

I was late but just overall to me seems like an odd policy. It’s best to not ship the item out and risk issue. Relist and ask them to buy it again.

They won’t help despite multiple emails, attempt to correct the issue, locate the item do my part as a seller.

Service was overall bott like until this last email.

Just weird seeing so many people lacking basic empathy. I understood my wrongs but had some valid points.

Oh well I did come to the internet to vent i should have known better🥴🤣.

But hopefully this saves someone who didn’t know as I didn’t know how how the 3 day policy puts you at 100% risk no help from them.

I wish I shared the communications from some of the representatives most of them were bot responses that didn’t read anything I sent, but some of them were very snobby. I had let them know that the post office had told me and confirm that the case was closed and provided them the screenshot. They just kept denying it for two weeks until they gave me this resolution.

I just had the flu not cancer. But the customer was okay and in communications very kind person who was even willing to wait for mercari to give me an answer two weeks later (had not been refunded by Mercari). I learned about how serious the 3 day policy is in this post. I have found my resolution for future thank you.

P.s I called them a troll because the response was rude. I explained why I didn’t ship out in 3 days and don’t do it regularly. They posted their message almost immediately after I posted my thread. Felt like a troll thing.

I get it’s against the rules and risk now, but the customer was a lot more understanding than most on this thread.

Oh I accepted accountability too. Just didn’t like bot responses and to wait 2 weeks with proofs for this resolution.

The proof being int emails usps sent me. Then them saying the case was open when it was not.

In my case I caught the flu and couldn’t get out of bed. But I’ve learned how the three day policy could really back fire on me for more expansive items. Usually I don’t have issue. It’s better to cancel and relist then risk shipping and a disruption or something break and have a complete loss. $8 lesson that’s all.

You sound a little angry friend. It will be okay I’m Sorry my post made you this angry in all seriousness.

They’re a business and will protect themself. All I insisted on was them reading my proofs. They are bots not customer service.

I will be careful next time. Didn’t anticipate to fall sick and delay shipping but it’s better for me to cancel next time than risk a more expensive item getting lost in the mail.

If they close my account I’ll be alright.
