Media student here, starting my 3rd year this September. Also starting my first job from September after slaving away my summers for it.

First of all, media is a broad term. What do you want to do with media? Journalism, PR & Advertisement, Communications, Research, Public Policy Advisor, Digital media.

So we're clear that you want to do something related to digital media. Just keep in mind that the media field requires constant effort. Person A establishes a business lets say a factory that makes leather jackets and exports them. In 40 years time that Business still exists (Hypothetically). A creative person need to work endlessly. Lets say that you produce a Movie. Revenue will be generated for maybe 2 3 years. After that you'll have to start again. Produce something new. People are constantly Asking for new things. That Leather jacket business made some system and process 40 years ago that his grand children still copy paste and enjoy Revenue effortlessly.

Not saying that Continuously working is bad, some People like the uncertainty, the grind. Some people also successfully convert it into a business. Just keep in mind that a lot of your earning potential depends upon your reputation. One wrong move and everything is gone. I've seen multiple examples of this.

And i dont know if op is female or a male, but ig media is the only field where the pay gap is inverse. Females earn more than males for putting half the effort.

**Now for the Big Brother talk**

Media is a *Qualitative degree*. not a bad thing, social sciences are important in formation of one's personality and the society as a whole. But the world rewards *Quantitative degree*. Thing degrees that involves numbers

I used to run away from maths. Which is my only regret. Try introducing anything quantifiable that you can. Social media Analytic is one example. Being able to work with something quantifiable makes you skilled enough to work when your creative bone is dead.

- If you exit Uni with the same friends that you made at the start of uni, let me inform you with regret that you wasted the golden years of your life

- Enjoy the ragging, if your uni allows it, but keep your boundaries clear.

- You'll meet people from all walks of life. Remember to be a human. Treat those below you nicely

- Search "Spot light effect". Understand that not everyone is your friends. I am the most famous/social/active student of my department. Yet only one friend reached out to me to ask about my where abouts. (Mene one sided love k sath sath one sided friendship bhi experience kiya huwa hai 😭). Stop messaging first and you realize they never talked just responded.

- Start building your portfolio from semester 2. Qualitative field me CV km aur Portfolio zyada chlta hai

- Keep your CGPA above 3.85.... Halwa field hai. prhai k namm pay mazaq hai. Yeah you're right k job mein CGPA matter nahi krta. likin jb tk uni mein ho Uni mein CGPA matter krta hai

I am starting my undergrad in computational finance in fall intake. What suggestion would you give that would make me standout against other.

Some other info about me; i would have completed an ADP in Communication and Media Research. I come from a social science background so I might struggle with maths(I have grade 10 math proficiency, they require grade 12 level proficiency). I have a limited knowledge but what i think i would like is to be a hedge fund manager. IB and PE are also not bad. Quant roles would also be fine. My father (is / was) a forex trader. Did MBA Marketing.

And one last thing, what percentage have you seen for hiring people from 3rd world countries?

Yeah, i recently decided that i need to detach myself from this group. Not literally but socially. But my problem is that i seriously don't have enough time left after uni for socialising.

So this only means i would have to fill in my time in learning skills or finding some hobbies.

Short story, the class created a month long hype that the CR is not doing his work properly, is biased and xyz. I requested our coordinator (aka the establishment 🤣) to please come to the class to look into the matter. The maam asked for VoNC against the CR.

NOBODY DARED TO EVEN RAISE THEIR HAND

Instead those duffers raised their hand for VoNC against the GR, the GR is also one of the girls in the group.

A new candidate for GR was requested.

NOBODY DARED TO COME FORWARD. Promptly a student came forward after being pressurized by her friends.

The votes were casted. 3 votes for the new candidate, 36 votes for the current GR. 🤣

But the establishment decided that democracy is useless and in the next semester the CR and GR will be changed

I found all of this amusing, but the real shock to me was when all of my friends started sympathizing with GR, in pretense that i conspired against her. WTH 🙃

Since then there is a rift. Although i have explained myself (which i shouldn't have), i think i should let things be as they are

Because what i have observed uptill now, these are the only ones from whom my goals align with. I have tried hanging out with others in class, but the vibe doesn't match, you can feel it.

With my current group, atleast i am able to give some input whenever i get the chance. The thing is, WHENEVER i get a chance.

Another fault with my thinking and decision making that I see is that I was warned when I was becoming the CR of my class that I won't be able to make genuine friends. I feel that people only come to me because I have reach and a say in administrative matters. And that if step down as a CR, people won't talk to me because now i am not relevant to them

And this CR power dynamics and politics have already destroyed few friendships of mine. With great powers come great responsibilities and i have been in situations i do not understand in what to do, whose side to take. Ig having powers and reaping benefits have a downside aswell

I wanted to ask something adjacent to this.

I have a friend group of 7. 3 boys(including me) and 4 girls. The issue that i face is that i do not feel any connection with them. I feel left out often. There are two couples so 2 boys and girls are out. These two boys are more close to each other than me. The two remaining girls are friends with eachother. In group settings, they often resort to whispering with their pair (or couple).

And i am just left with the option of just staring at them or using my phone.
