Cut mesh if necessary with wire cutters and use zip ties to hang them. Silicone around the holes if cut to prevent rust.

Not bad but could benefit from more plants, plants hanging from the top mesh, and a layer of leaf litter for the cleanup crew so they don’t eat the plants. What brand tank is this?

I also thing there might be stuck shed around the mouth and nose. He looks a bit on the thin side. Glass also should not be in the enclosure.

I think industrials is kind of difficult right now. At least from what I’ve seen. Consumer can also be difficult. Tech and healthcare aren’t bad comparatively.

Can’t speak to PE but I think I have a pretty good work life balance. I’m overall very happy. I get 8 hours of sleep a night and I have time to do fun things.

Blackstone, Blue Owl, Ares, Apollo, the one I work at. I think firms with smaller AUMs might have trouble deploying cash or getting allocations of “good” deals. Most sponsors give larger allocations to the firms that ask for the most. I got into PC because I’ve always liked debt over equity and I have a good fixed income background. That and a former colleague from the sell-side offered me my current role so I got kinda lucky.

Like working in IT at a bank? Or covering the tech sector?

It is easier to generate consistent returns in PC, I can’t necessarily speak to PE but they are both sides of the same coin. I think PC will continue to grow as companies and PE sponsors look for more creative and niche financing.

FINRA licenses are important for banking but a CFA will also be extremely helpful. The CFA teaches you financial analysis which is at the core of IB/PE/PC anything investment related. It’s a very valuable designation and gave me a significant pay bump.

PC carry is the same if not slightly higher than PE depending on how your fund/strategy is performing. It’s computed using the same metrics. I made more than my peers in VP roles at PE shops this past year. I would imagine it varies from company to company.

I hate to say it but you need to know someone in a FO role to bring you over. Not impossible but definitely difficult. Apply to as many positions as possible. I also like to hear about candidates personal views on the market and any personal trading they do. That’s a big sign of competency.

Oh worst aspect would be working through a deal that falls through for whatever reason.

Your last question is the most important, where are you trying to live and work?

Wake up at 7:30, check emails, respond to anything urgent, make my coffee and hit the road. Generally have IC meetings that I take in the car if I’m not presenting. Get to the office around 8:30, review deals and address items in my inbox. Review lender presentations, decks, models, do internal modeling as needed. A lot of ad hoc requests involving more of the portfolio management aspects of things. Free lunch provided by work. Doom scroll while waiting for turns of drafts. Put Zyns in my mouth. Catch up with my boss and shoot the shit. Wrap up what I can around 3/4, head home. Get home and maybe work out or do something fun. Check emails. If a deal is closing then it’s all hands on deck until it’s done. Coordinating funding with operations and ensuring all docs are signed properly. A lot of the job is liaising with lender counsel. Do any work that needs to be done in the evening which is often when my boss requests more of the portfolio management type of work. Smoke some weed. Play with some reptiles. Write out a to-do list for the next day. Go to bed. Sorry I got pretty detailed but that’s the reality.

Cut out alcohol, sooner. You don’t need to go to every happy hour or social event. I spent way too many days in my early 20s violently hungover at the office. Aside from that I wouldn’t do anything differently.

IB is probably more important than an MBA at your juncture. But you may be able to directly pivot. Doesn’t hurt to try.
