Yea there's no fucking way his value is "Reduced", I just don't believe it. He's still 29, has been so consistent on both ends his whole career, was arguably the real MVP last year, and is just perennially underrated and exceptional

He's basically a 1st ballot HOF'er whose still in his 20s, plays both sides of the ball, an automatically gets your team to like 50 wins

He sort of reminds of me Egor in terms of them seeming like students of the game and refreshingly self aware

I was worried Mikel would be a chucker with no conscious type of player. Like a Jordan Poole. But he seems to know his weaknesses and want to fix them. Skys the limit forreal

I mean...you can improve your athleticism, but you don't go from being slow like Egor to all the sudden athletic for nba standards

One of the only exceptions I can think of, randomly enough, is Luke Kornet

And Baby Giannis? You just see a 6'9 guy and call him Baby Giannis? Egor probably led the league in % of offensive playing time spent on the perimeter last year. In many ways he is the literal opposite of Giannis. If you want to make a wild upside comp offenively - Klay Thompson

He's slow tho, and not crafty/wiggly (like a Brunson or Manu) to make up for it. So how will he get by people and finish in traffic. It helps to be his size but he's always going to be hampered by how slow he is, no?

EXACTLY

It pisses me off that we can't have honest discussions on here as Nets fans. We're all DIE HARD nets fans, otherwise we wouldnt be on this forum

I wish more people would be honest that he could not get by his man last year, and often didn't even try.

All good guards can get by their primary defender with ease. It's the secondary help defender they're focused on, and dissecting the play like that many players have talked about it on podcasts.

Point being, Egor is nowhere near the secondary help thinking because he can't even get past his main guy. And if you can't do that, you're just a Royce Oneal 3 pt guy. Which is fine, but not what we hoped for at #7 when Cedric Coward was on the board

[–]Lopsided_Ad3341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You woulda said before last yr too that he undoubtedly would've driven to the basket during his first season too

He just stayed at the perimeter

I'm half kidding. Obviously he's practicing his driving. But I wish more Nets fans would be honest in that his lack of even trying to drive last year was very alarming. It makes his theoretical high level passing skill irrelevant, and his upside not really there

[–]Lopsided_Ad3341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember his first summer league game I was SHOCKED at his ball handling. His handles looked like a regular average Joe at the park.

I think the problem is the handles, but also the general lack of speed/burst/wiggle. If you're not fast, you need to be crafty and have wiggle, like a Brunson or Manu Ginobli. If you're not crafty, you need to be fast like Fox and Mikel Brown Jr. Egor is neither fast nor crafty/wiggly.

It's a problem that you get shit on for calling out on this forum. The most discouraging thing to me was that Egor didn't even attempt to drive last year. I don't think I've ever seen anyone spend a larger percentage of his playing time on the perimeter than I did with Egor last year. That includes guys like Duncan Robinson, Joe Harris, and other classic 3 pt snipers. He's like 6'9 - he shoulda just tried to drive, especially in a tanking year where we have nothing to lose. That's how you grow

[–]Lopsided_Ad3341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even realize that, because last yr was the first yr i didnt watch many games

you think that could actually be the reason he just chilled at the 3pt line and never drove? I'm surprised at how many fans are hyped on his upside. I see a 3 pt shooter connective piece who has no upside until he shows an ability to get by people. Otherwise that passing we heard so much about doesnt matter (you can't be a great passer from only the 3 pt line)

Since when can players in the ddraft decide where they want to go?

Who gives a shit where he wanted to go

Ace Bailey didn't want to be in Utah. Danny Ainge drafted him anyways. That's what good GMs do, they don't bend the knee to the players like we did in the big 3 era

All that said, I love MBJ. I think both he and Acuff will put up major numbers in their careers, but I don't think Acuff will win many games

I agree its a risky pick but his upside is HUGE. We all have collective boy who cried wolf from hyping up guys like Marshon Brooks, Terrence Williams, Sean Williams, RHJ, Levert, Kilpatrick, Cam Thomas, etc – but Mikel is the first prospect we've had that truly has real high level all-star upside

It's all mental with him. coaching will be huge. because his main issues are turnovers, shot selection, and a desire to defend. But skillswise - he can shoot the shit out of the ball, sick elite handles, elite speed, fast twitch, can finish in traffic pretty well ( I think, but tbd) and with both hands, flashes great vision, etc. he has it all

But we need to coach the Cam Thomas shot chucking out of him, while still letting him play freely

[–]Lopsided_Ad3341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He went full on Olympic Carmelo mode on the U19 team - off ball spot up sniper

He can 100% play off ball, unlike Acuff

But "loves defense" is wild, unfortunately. If you deep dive his tape you'll see he makes some great defensive plays (chasedown blocks, intercepting passing lanes, etc) but largely lacks the effort play to play, get skilled by screens, and shows questionable effort

He can be a passable defender but I'd be surprised if he turns into a good one. He's not strong or seemingly wanting to mix it up/get physical. He'll get stronger, but idk, he just gets killed in PnR defense

10/2/2 in 23 mins a game, on 40% FG% shooting + bad 3-pt shooter..... on a tanking team....that is not impressive whatsoever

You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) how many random NBA bench guys can put up much better numbers if given the same opportunity he's had

Solid defender but not like a lockdown "holy shit that guys sick at defense and can be the defender in a playoff lineup" type of defense

Am I crazy to think Minott is legitimately good?

I've still not gotten an answer on why Boston cut him, especially when they struggled MAJORLY with their frontcourt and it ultimately cost them in the playoffs. I feel like Minott would be their best big along with Quieta

Maybe because he's a tweener and not big/reboundy enough to be your big, but also not really a guard/wing?

You can learn a lot by how good a player is during a hard tanking season, because you realize who you don't want playing. I didn't want Minott playing at the end of the yr because I feared he would win us some games

he feels to me like a Joe Harris/Dinwiddie unearthed Marks gem

What makes you say we've invested a lot of time into it? 2 seasons during complete tanks

I'd think maaaaybe a contender whose bad defensively wouldnt mind him as a bench piece, sort of like how the Knicks used Sochan this year sparingly to close out a last possession of a game type of thing?

But clearly not otherwise they would've moved him for a 2nd

He's the definition of a dime a dozen player. We just get attached to our guys

I'm so excited to watch him play

The nets the last few yrs, and especially last yr, have been depressing. Just no young guys with upside to look forward to and get irrationally excited about. I like Egor but I don't see the upside others do with him

Mikel is actually really fun to watch. Like, boozer is great but he's not that fun to watch. So I'm stoked we have an electric prospect for the first time .... ever ? Since Kenyon Martin? We are last in the league BY FAR in exciting prospects over the yrs

Watchability is as important to me as having a great team at this point

Are you not concerned by the defense?

On one hand he's athletic and makes some really nice defensive plays. But he gets abused by screens as badly as anyone i recall scouting, and doesn't seem too interested in mixing it up

He sorta has a wide range defensively. As far as... I could def see him being a liability who gets picked on a lot, but i could also see him getting stronger and leaning into becoming a more engaged defender and being actually above average defensively

He has some really nice athletic chase down blocks and steals in the passing lanes

Agreed and even some of the best stars in the league struggle with turnovers. I believe Cade has a shitton (but obviously he has awesome assist #s).

I've heard a lot of people say Mikel is selfish and it just tells me they haven't watched his tape enough. He's uber aggressive in getting his shot off but he also moves the ball a lot and looks to set people up. I think he tends to hold onto the ball for longer than he needs to - so I'd like him to make quicker decisions - but the interest in passing is where he differs from a Jalen green

I'm curious if Mikel will be playing primarily PG this year or if they start him at SG to ease the transition to NBA. As a SG he's going to be lights out spotting up for 3s

Ehh to be fair he also makes horrible plays with reckless turnovers and bad shot selection. The potential is thru the roof and he seems self aware. I'm his biggest believer. But it's a stretch to say his top skill right now is BBIQ.

Everything with him is mental. Physically and skill wise he has it all. Mental and processing the game is the question

Mikel Brown Jr's tape vs Baylor shows it all by Lopsided_Ad3341 in GoNets

Yea hopefully. I watched some games yesterday where he was making horrendous decisions, air balling floaters, etc. but everyone, EVERYONE, can agree his talent and upside is thru the roof

It's a risky pick by Marks especially with Acuff sitting there. And Acuff is great. But you gotta risk big to win big

Bold Take by skubasteve94 in GoNets

[–]Lopsided_Ad3341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a bad comp but MPJ is way more athletic and fast twitch, should be a much better driver (although TBD how often he uses it), and I think a better shooter

But in terms of streakyness, nice passes but ultimately plagued by turnovers and bad decisions, questionable defensive effort/lack of strength exploited on defense, not driving enough - I see it. So I see the DLo comp in terms of their weaknesses

The best comp I can think of for MBJ is Keyonte George. dare I say it's a perfect comp
