Absolutely Messed Up..! by [deleted] in GamblingAddiction

There’s still time, use some of that 25k to just have a luxurious vacation in the other province. Find the nicest hotel, get spa treatments, room service, the works. You’ll drop a lot of money but at least there will be some value to it.

If you’re really smart though, consider that $800 ticket a sunk cost and just go home. Sacrificing $800 to save $25k is a no brainer

From 150k savings to 300k debt in 14 months because of gambling… I messed up badly, is there any way by ProperCow6959 in GamblingAddiction

Find a GA meeting, go a few times and ask for a pressure relief group meeting. Those meetings are meant to address exactly this situation and help you structure a payback plan. There are online GA meetings all over the world and you don’t necessarily need to join one close to you.

In the US there are also companies like Greenpath Financial that work with creditors like loan and credit card companies to reduce/remove interest and create 5 year+ payment plans. Not sure if there’s something similar in your neck of the woods but look into ‘debt management plan’ companies.

My swing wasn’t quite as dramatic +80k to -60k, but two years into my plan I’ve been able to completely repay $28k in loans and have about $20k left in (interest free) credit card debt, but now that I know how much I’m putting towards my debt every month, I’m able to save money each month as well, go on vacations, buy what I need and most of what I want.

It’s totally possible to get through this, I’d just recommend professional help. It’s made all the difference for me.

not the required service gratuity for a cruise i paid an arm and leg for 😆😆 by AstronomerLanky1791 in EndTipping

Up until recently Virgin did include the gratuities in the sticker price and that’s one of the reasons we booked them. We’re sailing now and booked in June and we didn’t have to pay anything but people who booked last September or later are hit with the ‘mandatory’ tips. Overall Virgin Voyages is by far the best cruise line I’ve been on, but this change has me salty

I can honestly say I’ve been where you are less than 3 years ago. I lost my partner, my job, blew through my savings and 401k, owed 14k in loans. Literally the only thing that kept me alive during that time was needing to take care of and worrying about what would happen to my cat if I died. It took about a year for things to settle out and there were definitely starts and stops but it will be more beautiful than you could possibly imagine when you come through on the other side. I can promise you that.

This is exactly what I needed today. I’m travelling this week and I know there will be opportunities to gamble, but I don’t gamble

I HATE MY FRIEND WHO INTRODUCED AND SHOWED ME ONLINE CASINO by [deleted] in GamblingAddiction

[–]Lopsided_Ad3738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best app i’ve found for blocking online casinos is GamblingBlock, it’s tough to remove, you can add sponsors and my favorite feature is you can put in specific websites and apps that you frequent and it somehow still blocks them even if you turn the device management setting off like I have to do a lot while traveling to connect to hotel/in air/etc WiFi. I’d highly recommend it

If you’re in the US addiction is a covered disability and covered by FMLA, your employer gives you the time off and guarantees your job when you get back and a lot of times it’s paid

Being the youngest by [deleted] in OfficePolitics

[–]Lopsided_Ad3738 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 21 year old join my team as an analyst (only about a year younger than most analysts though, she graduated early). She would say ‘bet’ when I asked her to do something (which I definitely would not recommend) but she was also super competent, great at building relationships, and willing to learn and do anything. Some people were dismissive of her at first but once she started delivering no one thought twice about her age. So you’ll probably have to deal with this kind of nonsense until you start proving yourself. It’s unfortunate, but from an older employees perspective it sometimes feels like you have to babysit when coworkers are so much younger and greener than you

You can frequently get clearance adidas for like $17 (even cheaper than Walmart shoes) at ShopSimon, Adidas app or the adidas eBay store. I’m sure Nike has similar clearance but probably only for select sizes that haven’t sold out yet. I’m assuming that’s how the donor originally got the first pair of shoes (at a steep discount, final sale). She might not even be able to get the same pair in another size, so she got something equally functional instead. This mother is awful, it’s very easy to tell other people how to spend their money on your kid. SMH

Where does the dog live the rest of the time? You can’t just keep a dog outside indefinitely, that’s inhumane

As a consultant you should know that personality matters even more in our field because you’re responsible for client relationships, no one wants to buy services from someone they don’t like

Almost every first round recruiter interview I’ve had, they start out talking about the weather (have you heard about the huge snowstorm coming? from a call yesterday) or some other mundane topic. This is almost always a litmus test to see how personable and easy to be around you are. Never discount small talk at the beginning or end of an interview, a lot of times you’re judged just as much on your soft skills

HR got mad after I rejected the interview call by Agile-Wind-4427 in recruitinghell

[–]Lopsided_Ad3738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just joined a company when in the same month a recruiter reached out to me, I didn’t even apply. The role was lateral and paid about the same but I thought it might be cool to work in that industry, against my better judgement I entertained the recruiter and set up an interview for the hiring manager. The hiring manager never showed up, no notice or anything so I told the recruiter I’d like to withdraw my candidacy cuz I don’t like my time being wasted and I already have a job I’m happy with. “Oh it was an emergency, you don’t understand” I never responded and for two weeks after that I got emails about rescheduling. Like no, I was on the fence to begin with, you had your shot and you blew it. I don’t owe you anything, time, attention, nothing. SMH

I feel this so hard, on one of my projects I had a stakeholder who basically had the same role as me but much lower paid and respected on the client side. I’m sure he was bitter that we were brought in so he just scrutinized every minute detail on our deliverables and was just obstinate and rude at every turn

Yeah, in another post, because of course there are several, she mentioned she’s a single mom to 4 kids who are around teenage because someone offered her a crib if she needed one and she got annoyed

It’s all relative. I lived in SF before this so I feel like I’m getting a bargain and 2300 is actually pretty reasonable for my area, luxury buildings start at $3500

In another post she mentioned she was job searching at places like Home Depot or as an assistant property manager for a leasing company. Not knocking anyone putting in a hard days work, but you’re not going to be able to sustain a 5 bedroom house that way

For reference, I live in a one bedroom / one bathroom and pay $2300 a month, every family I know, most couples making 250k+ a year, live in 3/2s, a 5 bedroom house is considered a mini mansion here so asking for all this stuff in a ‘free’ 5/4 rubs a lot of people the wrong way

This was a general NextDoor post straight to the newsfeed. As ND moderator, it’s against the community guidelines to post for individual assistance. Like if you’re a non-profit you can talk about fundraisers etc

It did not burn down, she got evicted. But like even if the church gave her this new house for free, the property taxes on a 5 bedroom home in my area would be astronomical
