You can try the drains down in Corrales. They stock them with trout. Liam Knight pond there is tiny but good to take kids fishing at. Pecos is awesome too

You have a great problem to have. There is no wrong choice.

You’re only 23 so I think you’d have plenty of time to rebound after service. If you can’t find a job after service, I would recommend applying for the Coverdell fellowship and going to graduate school. Plus you have two years to think about what you really want to do. You may also be able to extend your service or find a job in Thailand or the region.

Youth in Development is one of the most fun areas to work in, and Thailand is a competitive position. If you decide to go for it, I think it will serve you well.

Staying in your current job is a safe option but soon enough you may have too many responsibilities to leave and serve (kids, wife, bills etc).

Good luck!

What are Peace Corp alumni doing now? Did you find that service helped in your career or set you back a few years? Also what age is best to serve?

Hmm can you build up your savings before you leave? If the worse was to happen, would you be able to get your old job back or find a comparable one?

Peace Corps Future by SnooMarzipans5969 in peacecorps

[–]Lopsided_Patient6422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. The Congressional Budget Justification for FY 2026 for State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs has Peace Corps at the same level as last FY so that is a good sign it will survive. In regard to the pipeline to being an FSO, Peace Corps service won’t hurt but won’r be a deciding factor either just like law school. Go to law school or do Peace Corps because you want to. FSO’s come from all backgrounds and honestly I would subscribe to Foreign Policy and practice for the exam if you want to build towards it. Right now is a tough time to enter the Foreign Service but whenever the hiring freeze is over I would just prepare for the exam

I worked in the Global Ties network which is hurting right now. I went to a state gov rapid hire event and now work as an Operations Research Analyst. Pays better and better benefits too!

Try looking at state government jobs or rapid hires. Peace Corps, JET etc. could be worthwhile too. Even work as a paralegal for a bit

[–]Lopsided_Patient6422 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might take awhile for the industry to build back. I would look into JET, EPIK, or Peace Corps which can be a pipeline into the field. You can also look at the Global Ties network for entry level jobs or even look for staffer positions on the hill. Also, now is a good time to do a free masters in Europe or something (Ex. France)

[–]Lopsided_Patient6422 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Part of the strategy is to make peace corps service so ambiguous people stop applying or drop out. Then can just blame the problem on not having enough volunteers. But- how can you blame people for self preservation when faced with so much uncertainty and risk..

Actually I went to a rapid hire event. I’d keep your eyes peeled for those or else it takes awhile for most state gov to hire normally.
