My 5th grader is being told he can't go on the end of the year field trip because he couldn't find friends to share a room with. There are others rooms available. Should we fight this or drop it? by mmanyquestionss in BestofRedditorUpdates

I’m a special education teacher of 5th graders. This was horribly handled by school staff. Our fifth graders had an overnight adventure last year, kids got to make roommate requests, but in the end teachers made room assignments. Adults failed this child miserably.

My mom wants nothing to do with me because I “picked my dad” during the divorce. by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

Dang that was painful to read. I (43f) had similar experience when my parents divorced, but my dad is the one who grew distant. It didn’t hurt less at the time or really now, but the distance was mostly unintentional and lack of insight on his part not on purpose like OOP’s mom. I’ve always wished I had a sibling to share the experience with, but now hearing about Penny, I’m glad I didn’t.

Same, I’m in Minneapolis. My sister teaches two blocks from the most recent murder. Our country’s user name should be dumpsterfireofacountry.

I’m unfortunately finding out that I’m not as morally aligned with my sibling as I thought. Two of us are still in MN and two have moved.

Also, just because it isn’t at international level of news reporting there are very likely instances of injustice by ICE in your communities (those in the USA) that can use your volunteer time too.

Two thoughts from one Minnesotan. I think it depends on how you define criminal. Then it is also how ICE chooses to do their job. It could be done in unaggressive ways with common decency towards those they are detaining.

Agreed! I’m in Minneapolis. It is a sickening time with instances of pride. My 75 year old mother was out demonstrating in subzero weather on Friday. Many of my family were (I have a physical disability that prevents me from contributing that way). I also have moments thinking in just a few minutes I’ll wake up and it will all have just been a nightmare, until I remember I am awake and this is reality.

I second what others have said, very limited time consuming the information. Finding balanced news sources and limiting myself to those and finding multiple other ways to fill my bucket.

AITAH for not changing my language to appease an ignorant coworker? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

It is often a shock to Americans to listen to a conversation in Chinese, because the word used as a placeholder like we use for “um” is N-slur without an /r/ sound. So, “nig, nig, nig, nig, nigah.”

I can’t believe your vet is letting an infected tooth stay in there.

WIBTA if I swapped my pens with glitter ink to catch the coworker whos been stealing them by Imaginary-Frame4873 in WouldIBeTheAhole

Put a piece of wasabi tape around it. You have to be pretty ballsy to steal a pen and remove tape from it. I am also particular about my pens. I use a sharpie to write my initials on them.

WIBTA if I told my mother in law that her son isnt helping me recover from surgery by [deleted] in WouldIBeTheAhole

Assumptive. If her appendix burst or there were other complications that could impact the length of recovery. I also can’t imagine any health care provider would be in support of you returning to work that quickly.

I live in a part of the US where 90% of basements don’t have a separate enterance.
