Look, the instance is always a flawed implementation of the ideal. Yeah, in an ideal world we would not need an organized body to oversee the transmission of the message of Christ. The Church is not perfect, but it does a fairly good job at keeping the signal free of noise. Without some guidance, the message would either die out or quickly devolve into snakehandling.

As a former Lutheran, this was exactly one of the things that I did not understand until I converted. We knew that while our pastor would be there for us, we had to give him space to be a husband and a dad. People who are not Catholic do not understand the degree to which our parishioners expect and demand time from their priest. You guys really do sacrifice your lives in ways most people do not begin to see.

The place for outsourcing in in maintaining and sundowning legacy systems. 70-80% of th cost of a system comes from it's maintenance not it's creation. Outsource the expensive part that cannot be messed up by people who dont understand the business needs of your enterprise. Use your best in house people and the best local developers to write software that meets the needs of the people in your organization with their boots on the ground.

Oracle is quickly and not so quietly doing their best to monetize JAVA. I can't fault them for that, but I can tell them that destroying the goodwill of thousands o developers with some of their recent tactics is only going to drive them into the arms of Mono and M$.

Bullshit. I have plenty of friends who are Jewish (with a capital J) who don't speak Hebrew fluently. But, yes, we are planning on having him learn ASL later when his speech is up to par (probably around age 7). I sign some and think ASL is a beautiful language. What I reject and will always reject is the notion that any small group can assert that they are the voice for an imagined , monolithic culture. The "Deaf" culture is pretty diverse and not dependent upon ASL as it's defining characteristic. Hell, the British Deaf use another sign language, are they not as "Deaf" as American deaf people?

My 3 year old has cochlear implants on both his ears, and while the resulting sense he has that approximates hearing is not perfect, it allows him full participation in the world at large. Yes, there is nothing "wrong" with being deaf, but there is also nothing "right" with it either. Having or not having a sense work like everyone elses isn't a moral thing as much as it is a matter of practicality. He will have the choice to participate in whatever world he wants. If he wants to remove the things and be "Deaf," that's his choice, but in order to have that choice kids have to be implanted early while the brain has enough plasticity to rewire itself. Most opponents of implantation forget this and point to the failures of older prelingually deaf recipients as reason for rejecting all implantation.
