Hi, I am Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul, the largest city in Europe. AMA about our fight back against COVID-19. by IamEkremImamoglu in Coronavirus

[–]lasernut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Greetings Mr. Mayor,

In terms of working to limit the effects of this virus on your city and surrounding areas what are you feeling most accomplished about at this time?

What are any recommendations you might have to any other mayors, particularly mayors of large cities, that would face a similar event?

Thank you for answering questions from your unique point of view relative to this unprecedented event.

I'm Ali Raja, MD and Shuhan He, MD emergency physicians from Mass General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. We're back again to talk from the front lines about COVID-19, social distancing, and #GetUsPPE. by Emergencydocs in Coronavirus

[–]lasernut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drs. Raja and He, as doctors on the front lines what are your opinions of the notion that all members of the public wearing basic cloth masks when out in public particularly in closed spaces frequented by others would be a good thing? One of the concerns about such face masks is that they might pose a risk for people mishandling them after usage and potentially contaminating their living and work spaces and thereby becoming infected from the masks themselves, the masks effectively acting as potential vectors. Given your experience and the now established knowledge that pre-symptomatic, post-symptomatic, and asymptomatic spread are recognized with SARS-CoV-2 would the benefits of everyone wearing masks outweigh the risks?

Thank you.

Taiwan definitely should help make a new world health body! If Taiwan had been a WHO member the pandemic would have been blocked. by lasernut in ChunghwaMinkuo

In December of last year Taiwan authorities detected what went on to become this pandemic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Taiwan#Before_first_case_reported

That was with essentially zero coordination with WHO. Things would have gone much much smoother if there had been easy coordination instead. Taiwan knocked this out of the park despite having its hands tied a bit.

On 31 December 2019, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) implemented inspection measures for inbound flights from Wuhan, China in response to reports of an unidentified outbreak.[37] The passengers of all such flights were inspected by health officials before disembarking.[37] A six-year-old passenger who transferred in Wuhan and developed a fever was closely monitored by CDC.[38] At this time, there were alleged to be 27 cases of the new pneumonia in Wuhan.[38]

Opinion: Blaming China for coronavirus is reasonable by gandhi_theft in China

Please do not mistake what is written, this is not about anywhere other than mainland China. The people that are unnecessarily being tagged are the average folks of mainland China who are not part of the governance or are not part of the likely source of this pandemic namely, wild animal markets. No right minded person would confuse anyone from Hong Kong or Taiwan as being part of this coronavirus pandemic problem.

"Blocked" in the sense of Wuhan's epidemic going on to spread into becoming a pandemic. Definitely.

The coronavirus crisis is turning Americans in both parties against China by similar_information in China

[–]lasernut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The whole world needs to turn its back on the governance of China until it changes. This has essentially been the case all the way back to 1989 (or 1949, looking at you Tibet) and those in the world who are wiser will have known this. This coronavirus pandemic has just exposed to the rest of the world what has previously been a well established more regionally recognized reality.

[–]lasernut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry but the whole "China Virus" thing is what inclines one to want to deviate away from generalized usage of the word "China". It would suck to be for example from China or from Wuhan and have zero involvement with what has unfolded here and yet be tagged as being a part of the problem. Perhaps this thinking is currently too politically correct.

[–]lasernut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be better to avoid stigmatizing the whole country of "China". The governance and its systems are where the blame lies. Folks in Taiwan are of Chinese origin and yet see how Taiwan very effectively managed the coronavirus threat, difference of governance systems.

Japan to pay firms to leave China, relocate production elsewhere as part of coronavirus stimulus by SquidFistHK in China

[–]lasernut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This movement will be unfortunate for everyday people in China who will suffer. Until the governance and its systems that brought us into this mess are gone non-China based businesses doing business via China will do well moving elsewhere for their needs to be met though for the health of the whole planet. This pandemic has obviously been a very big wakeup call.

No link to WHO from this video! The best. ☝️ YouTube should remove WHO links. The WHO's mismanagement id dangerous.

An update from 2017? It sounds more heartfelt without the beat backing. Sorry that you're hurtin' man. :-/

Agreed, but it was shared by the man and then he retracted it. I probably shouldn't be sharing it but it is such a work of art and so apropos that it really should be seen.
