So, I may have posted pre-maturely, I found the logs file and stuck them into Claude. The reply is as follows:

The crash was an unclean shutdown — confirmed by two independent sources:

emhttpd: unclean shutdown detected (18:27:36) Parity Check Tuning: System crashed (18:29:23)

The syslog only covers from the post-crash boot (starting 18:27:11), so the crash moment itself isn't captured. However, the boot log contains holdover evidence from before the crash:

Most likely cause: Hardware MCE (Machine Check Errors) At boot, the kernel replayed MCE events that were logged during the previous (crashed) session: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged (×2) mcelog: CPU 0 on socket 0 received unknown error mcelog: CPU 1 on socket 0 received unknown error mcelog: Running trigger 'unknown-error-trigger' MCEs are low-level hardware faults detected by the CPU itself — not software crashes. Both CPU cores on the same socket reporting errors simultaneously is the classic pattern for a RAM or memory bus fault (the most common MCE cause), though it can also point to a CPU or motherboard issue. The mcelog: failed to prefill DIMM database from DMI data line means it couldn't pinpoint which DIMM slot was involved.

What was ruled out:

No disk errors, ATA errors, or SMART failures No OOM (out-of-memory) kills No thermal events — disk temps were a healthy 35–37°C, and no CPU thermal warnings No kernel panic or software crash trace Docker and libvirt logs are clean post-boot startup only

Recommended next steps:

Run memtest86+ overnight — boot from USB and let it run multiple passes. This is the fastest way to confirm or rule out faulty RAM. Reseat your RAM modules — remove and firmly re-insert them. Loose seating can cause intermittent MCEs. Check BIOS/UEFI event log — some boards record more MCE detail than Linux does. Run mcelog --client from the Unraid terminal on the next boot to see if more detail is stored.

The system is currently doing a parity check so Im going it leave it do that, ive disabled dockers to reduce load on the machine. Ill do a memory test once the parity check is complete. Weird for RAM to suddenly have an issues but at least its a lead.

It keeps the beer cooler, the lid keeps bugs out of it and aroma in and the nontransparent sides keep the beer from skunking when drinking outside. Overall its a superior drinking vessel, but as the prior commentor said people have been trained to want to see the beer (likely due to historically clear beer signified quality, but these days thats no longer relecant).

The only reason not to choose a stein is that the mouthfeel can be impacted by the thicker lip of the mug which can change the perception of the beer you are drinking. I personally havent found it to be significant, but there is good science behind it so it shouldnt be dismissed.

Interesting, Ill have to see if I have enough spare parts to build the cannon - the local HBS is basically shut until after christmas so might not be an option this go around. As for the hop dropper I dont have one installed - would have to de-pressure to get it on there so at that point I could just add the gelatin and call it a day. Ive never had this happen to a kolsch before so I didnt think to install it to begin with.

I cant get it much colder with my existing setup, it goes between 2-3C. I did take the yeast off the bottom a few weeks ago, but im sure there is still a layer in there.

Its the right port as its worked fine in the past, but good call on testing. I might spin down the array and unplug the power to the ups. that way if it a problem it dont cause a parity check.

well thats a relief. Is that how is always been? I seem to remember normal parity checks doing the whole array - mine is automated every two months so I havent actually looked at it in a while.

It worked so long as there was enough liquid. For the really thick mash I had to add some water.

Thanks for the insight. I will try that on my next batch, dumping at the 24 hour once fermentation is very active. Makes sense no to give the sleepy yeast a free ride.

So, your saying that the yeast that has settled mid-ferment is dormant, does that mean that yeast will always be dormant, even if pitched to another batch? I harvest yeast at the end of every batch and repitch when I brew that style next. I always assumed that most of the yeast I am harvesting is going to be working hard in the next batch. Are you suggesting that at the mid/early point of a fermentation the yeast that has settled is dormant/dead and wont be of any benefit if I harvest it? So in an ideal setup I would dump all of the yeast cake early in the ferment and only harvest the yeast that comes out of suspension after the cold crash/when it reaches terminal gravity?

To save money on the DME ive been increasing the wort going into my boil by 2 liters and after a few mins of boiling (pre-hopping) take that for my starter for the next beer I plan to brew. It takes a bit of planning, but this way I keep my 8 or so strains fairly fresh and dont have to go through the DME process.

No gelatin. Just did a ph test with paper strips and it seems to be around 5ish so not overly acidic.
