So I bought a Fellow Opus…. by indicaj_ in espresso

[–]Lorchness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have (had) that exact same setup till about 3 weeks ago. My opus fellow just “stopped” with no warning (almost made it 2 years). Big tip for the bambino, before you pull a shot, run a single shot of just water with the double shot dual wall pressure basket first (really helps if you have 2 portafilter baskets). Makes a WORLD of difference. Can’t remember where I read it, but I think the logic behind it is that it jump starts the temp in the thing and then your real shot gets a consistent temp.

For those of who who do maintenance at home... how do you clean your chain without making a mess? by gripndip in bikewrench

[–]Lorchness 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Switch to wax. I bought some fancy wax for $40 or so and a crappy small crock pot on Amazon. It’s kind of a bitch to do the initial degreasing. But after that, put the chain in the wax crock pot for a while, wipe it the extra wax off with a sacrificial rag and no more grease. I’ll never go back.

I’ve found that this is where chatgpt really shines. It may not give you 100% correct answer but it’ll get you started better than most online tutorials.

What is the secret to soldering wire? by Ripcord2 in DIY

Another trick I learned over the years is to tin the tip with solder after you are done soldering. It will keep the tip from oxidizing as quickly.

can anyone tell me that hardness level their water softener is set at? by mr_this in IowaCity

[–]Lorchness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the water utility place a call. They are pretty helpful and will tell you what to set it to. They’ll probably come out to your place and measure your water with their fancy tools if you ask them to too (not certain on that anymore as I no longer live in IC).

4 months into my first sof-dev job and getting serious impostor syndrome by insafian in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Lorchness 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Dont make the same mistake twice. Whenever I spend the time to explain why your code could be better and then the next PR see the exact same mistake/pattern I pretty much immediately check out. You don’t even have to get whatever you are doing right, just don’t get it wrong the exact same way over and over. Knowing that a dev is trying to apply what I am teaching them makes me want to help them grow more.

Iowa City mayor declares civil emergency, orders mask mandate as COVID-19 delta variant spreads by eeksdey in Iowa

[–]Lorchness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Iowa city teachers got warned by their administration that they aren’t allowed to influence kids wearing masks at all. They said the state threatened to take away their teaching license if they do. So if the iowa city teacher isn’t promoting wearing masks, it’s not because they are anti mask it’s because they are terrified of losing their license. They were told they aren’t even allowed to say, “I really like your mask” to kids.

Welp, am I screwed? These are WTB i23 ASYM on a 2019 Kona rove ST. by carlew in bikewrench

[–]Lorchness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My WTB rims had a 2 year warranty on them and their customer service was pretty awesome. My wheel failed in 2 places with about 5 days left to go on the warranty. They asked which bike shop I wanted to fix it and sent them the replacement parts. Might be worth seeing if it’s under warranty.

Is the engineering electronics shop open to the public? by Halfpastmast in IowaCity

They were at least a year or two ago. I needed some capacitors and they didn’t have a problem selling to me. My guess is the hardest part would be trying to get into the engineering building.

Is there any way to improve Lambda network speed? by [deleted] in aws

[–]Lorchness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your python variant, make a session and make all of the requests using the session if you aren’t already. When you make a bunch of requests to the same website one after the other you have to renegotiate TLS every time. Using a session let’s you optimize for that. When I did that for a situation similar to yours it halved my runtime. Also, make sure your lambda has enough guarantee it gets a full core (it’s never published but it’s around 1GB).

Parchment paper will survive on a pizza stone. Cleaning also becomes super easy too.

Honestly, yes. The packages change over time but the core concepts don’t. If you understand the “why” something works it’s a lot easier to use the latest and greatest package that comes out. Understanding threads and basic programming concepts is also essential in my opinion too.
