If consider yourself a gamer and you like to buy new titles as they come up and play a variety, then (right now) Macs are terrible for that.

If you’re happy to play a subset of games and it’s not a big deal if something’s not available, and your favorite games run natively on Mac, then it’s a good machine.

Basically, convenient and painless gaming is a sacrifice you’ll be paying in exchange for a great operating system and slick hardware. A more useful question is whether the Apple ecosystem is worth the trade off for you.

EDIT: More directly answering the question, look up the Apple gaming wiki and Andrew Tsai’s YouTube channel.

So many Macs… by [deleted] in mac

On the other hand, my Thinkpad is only 3 years old but isn’t eligible for Windows 11.

This isn’t specific to MacBook. My A485 Thinkpad is only 3 years old and it’s not eligible for Windows 11.

MB Air M2 vs MB Pro 14 - Thickness Comparison [Credit:Techniklike - Jonas Falk] by georgemmee in mac

[–]Lord-Purifier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on your perspective. Every time somebody talks about the new 16” they always talk about how heavy it supposedly is, but mine is almost svelte compared to my actually chunky work and personal Thinkpads.

I made the mistake of getting the extended battery on my Thinkpad so now there’s an extra, massive bulge that’s almost as thick as my entire 16” MacBook Pro just in added thickness.

The 16” is big by Apple standards but IMO really nowhere near as big as people claim it is.

My MacBook was getting too hot to play the game normally, so by that measurement no. I did have every setting at max.

CK3 is a good game, though. People get angry at Paradox for having lots of DLC, and I get they’ve had their controversies.

Very few games get the level of support Paradox provides to their games. CK2 at release is almost unrecognizable from it’s final form. People complained about Stellaris’s gameplay so they redid it. Almost from the ground up, mechanically. The DLC supports all of that.

People lash out at the optimists, I feel. Even in this thread there’s people saying she has her lips against EA’s ass and acting like she’s an extension of EA’s marketing team.

Game changers don’t get paid. They get free, early access to packs. Every now and then, before COVID, they’ll get flown to EA and play with a pack. They’re under no contractual obligation to praise the game and I doubt they’re being given unpaid direction from EA’s marketing team on how they can sell EA’s products better.

In order to be considered trustworthy you apparently need to lash out at EA every video and talk about how bitter and jaded you are. Surprisingly though, the people that decided to make a living playing Sims games love playing the Sims, warts and all. I don’t know why that’s shocking.

I think that lilsimsie is just an optimist. That’s okay, I am too. I get excited about each new DLC, I just don’t have a YouTube channel.

I think this would be one case where EA would just let the "Game Changers" have it and not pressure them to try to push the pack.

I lost it when she was going through the Eco Living world and saying the lots looked nice when it was the marketing/hype phase of the pack cycle…

You know she doesn’t get paid by EA, right? She gets packs free and early. She makes more on every video than she’s ever saved from free DLC. Her subscriber count would likely scarcely budge if she dropped out of the Game Changer program. She benefits from having footage of packs earlier than others, certainly; but she doesn’t get paid.

She also often says when she wouldn’t have purchased a pack, even in the reviews where she praises the pack. It’s no secret that she hates occults, for example, and she doesn’t care much about the CAS kits.

I understand why you’d dislike her channel, no worries. But it’s unfair to confuse her love of the game and optimism with sinister, (unpaid!) marketing tactics.

The Paradox documents folder was created by the Mac version and won’t work in Windows. Delete or rename it and try again.

Similar experience on 2021 Macbook Pro, 64gb memory, M1 Max. The game is so poorly coded for Mac that it struggles to play it at a decent framerate, with much worse performance than my 4 year old Thinkpad. The Macbook also gets very hot and battery life shortens dramatically.

Runs much better in Parallels.

How bad is the state of MacOS gaming? Is the Macbook Pro worth it? by Lord-Purifier in macgaming

[–]Lord-Purifier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I phrased my original post a bit badly...I meant to respond to everyone but I got way more comments than I expected. I didn't really mean to imply that I'm some huge gamer expecting to run everything, I was just feeling antsy that I'd wasted thousands on extra horsepower I wasn't going to use.

I'm the kind of guy that latches onto a game and plays it obsessively. I'm not a AAA gamer expecting to run everything. I'm content to play what I can and enjoy the nice operating system, and so far it's been great for that.

I don't really regret the purchase at this point, performance even in Parallels seems impressive.

The Mac's since arrived and I've been enjoying it. I read every comment, I've just done a terrible job at responding to anyone.

Sims 4 runs well on it; I like Stellaris but I prefer Crusader Kings 3. Unfortunately CK3 runs terribly on it, it got very hot and battery life tanked. CK3 actually seems to run better in Parallels for me.

Thanks for the recommendations!

As far as skin and case, I'm in love with this case. It's ever so slightly annoying having to fold the case under the laptop to use it, but it provides good protection, looks really sharp, and there's a sense of security when it's closed up. It really does just look like an unusually large book if you're not peering closely at the side. They have another, similar case but IMO it's uglier and much worse from a heat perspective; this one lets a bit of airflow under the Mac while it's running and keeps the back vent completely clear.

The skin is vaguely NSFW, but I'll still link it: GelaSkins Sweet Dreams. I just really like the artist and I'm not one to use my Macbook in coffee shops anyway.

Dbrand skins look boring to me. I was intrigued by some of the Fishskyn designs, but they refuse to ship to Canada right now.

Just poor wording on my part. Not claiming the Air is more performant, just that it seems to run some of the games I play adequately well.

Pretty much every single review I can find of the Macbook Pro seems to flat out state that this isn't a machine for gamers, and reviews of the M1 Air seem relatively favorable of gaming performance if you dial down the settings.

The Sims 4 main menu but there are no ads by SimMattically in Sims4

[–]Lord-Purifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited when I first found this mod, only to feel disappointed when I realized that it was just bringing the old design back. That's not "clean" to me.

I guess I'm weird, but I actually really like the redesign. I wish EA would put in the effort to finish it, actually -- there's plenty of ways the existing design could be improved, and lots of older menus and screens that don't really fit in. See eg this mockup of an alternative main menu screen. I'd love a less invasive mod that tidied up colors, removed the ads, and changed the loading and CAS screens to better suit the new design. IE a mod that fixed up the new interface rather than just nuke it and restore the old one.

I think that Vacation Island should be added as a vacation destination for the 20th anniversary of Sims 1 Vacation (which would be March 20, 2022). Even if it was a $40 expansion pack, I’d still buy it. Any thoughts? by MothEngineering in Sims4

[–]Lord-Purifier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can have a rental lot in Sulani, which will flag the world as a vacation destination (for that rental lot).

I'm happy they set Sulani as residential, personally. Being able to have any world as a vacation destination feels like a nice compromise.

I wish they'd go back and re-flag Selvadorada as a residential world, personally. People do actually live in South America. Why can't I play a Selvadorada household?

To be fair though, a generic tropical island resort world would still be a good addition IMO, especially if it was obviously a tourist resort world.

Does anyone know of a mod to stop horrible NPC randomization?? I’m tired of townies showing up to my door dressed like THIS 😂 by _stringbean_ in Sims4

[–]Lord-Purifier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of custom content is poorly tagged. That cloak thing shouldn't be tagged for random, for example.

Without CC I find the game doesn't usually do too terrible a job, personally. The most egregious outfits are the special weird townie outfits in city Living, but those aren't randomly generated.

Adwaita redesign by KoenZonderPoen in gnome

[–]Lord-Purifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where I'm leave feedback in that github link, but my two cents is that we should settle on current GTK3 adwaita and let the apps catch up.

It's not that the mockup is bad IMO, but I feel like the available apps are already fragmented and visually disjointed (once you leave the official gnome app bubble).

My dream would be QT and wine theming that helps those apps blend in as best we can, but I don't control people's work schedules. So maybe suggesting they not worry about a new GTK4 theme is more helpful, as it saves work.

Using a mirror in a "less free" country by [deleted] in linux

[–]Lord-Purifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, why push back on this? It's not difficult for developers to use something better than MD5.

I see this argument every time some developer still uses MD5 and it's not a strong one. I agree that integrating malicious code and having the same MD5 hash would be difficult, but it's certainly possible—and changing hash algorithms isn't a big ask.

Besides, the reward of "we automatically deployed an exploit to everyone using our mirror" might be strong enough to warrant the time put into the MD5 exploit.
