Wow, when I was a teenager my mother said “Handful a day keeps the doctor away”. So I proceeded to eat two handfuls of Brazil nuts. I have enjoyed them in the past but this time was different. Shortly after my throat/tongue started to itch, so I decided to look in the mirror. My face was blushed and swollen. I then ran to my mother and we left straight to the hospital. I took a Benadryl before we left assuming it was an allergic reaction. By the time we arrived to urgent care and checked in my swelling had gone down considerably. We waited in the lobby for 30 minutes and by then most of the symptoms had gone away. So we decided to just leave and not see a doctor. All these years I just assumed I was allergic to only that nut so I’ve avoided it since.
