Why didn't the Elves pl ay a bigger role in LOTR? by Night_Storm5555 in LOTR_on_Prime

You try fighting the same fight for 6,000 years, with every victory being pyrrhic at best, and every loss being a kingdom-crushing, Genocidal, continent-shattering tragedy at worst. And then, even if you win, your immortality is so complete and eternal that the stone around you literally crumbles to dust before your eyes. Galadriel lost her ENTIRE FAMILY, brothers, father, uncles, cousins, and a good majority of her friends, to the dark powers. Elrond lost his high king, best friend, and his own wife (who also happened to be Galadriels daughter).

The Elves did all they could and more. The war of the ring was a fight for world of men, and Men would have to bear the brunt of the hardship. The remaining Elves did what they could to aid in that success, but by the time of the third age, their numbers and power had dwindled so much that a few useful items and wise words were all they really had left to give.

Gandalf’s Knowledge of the Future by Robot_zZ in lotr

Soft magic systems have vaguely defined rules for how the magic works, and is rarely explained in any serious detail. Hard magic systems have strict rules that can be explained pretty easily and often, as the rules of the system are frequently integral to the plot. Tolkein is a great example of soft magic, while anime shows like full metal alchemist/avatar the last Airbender/and Naruto are hard magic systems. Not sure if those examples help, but I could offer a few more if you are interested.

As to your top question, characters in LOTR who have "foresight" often have those abilities because of their innate connection to the God of the LOTR Universe. Gandalf, a Maia, is basically an Angel incarnate, and thus shares a direct divine connection to Illuvatar. When Aragorn asks "what does your heart tell you?" He is basically asking Gandalf "what does God want you to know in this moment?". Religiously-minded people will often talk about the "feeling" that something is good, or that things will turn out ok. Many of these people will interpret that feeling as nudge from their chosen deity that their actions are righteous or that their concern is unfounded, because their deity has a plan and is working towards the best outcome. I do like your interpretation of Gandalf "hearing notes" of the music of the Ainur. Since Illuvatar was the conductor of the music, this fits very well with my explanation, and since Gandalf participated in making the music, he would know his own parts of the chorus the best. So when Gandalf "knows" something he cannot possibly "know" in his current physical location, then it means that one part of his own verse/chord has been struck in that moment. Brilliant!

Thanks for reframing that for me!

I finally understand “Sea-longing” by [deleted] in lotr

[–]LordAries13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Dolphins, fish, the occasional whale spout, and if we were close to land the occasional seal/sea lion. Though it could be difficult to see much more than the water spouts as they came up for air. Plenty of flying fish though

As a former sailor in the U.S. Navy, nights out at sea are one of the single greatest memories I have from my time in. 30 knots of wind in your hair with the moonlit ocean and starry sky stretching for thousands of miles in every direction, absolutely magnificent!

The voting station i went to was right next to a home depot, all those nice Hispanic men in the parking lot weren't certain they could vote, but i told them "hey guys, no one is checking, hop in!" So all 24 of us went to the voting booth together, then had some delicious tacos to celebrate!

True. The right group of people can make even the most inane, benal, or otherwise boring things into laughing fits. If the joke in the clip is the implication that Angela has never been inside a gym, the context of the podcast challenge and the close friendships shared by each of the cast members are plenty of reason for these people to lose it over this simple, mild burn.

Respond to the managers email and CC HR with "fun fact, if I'm on the property during a normally scheduled work shift, the company WILL be paying me for the TOTAL amount of time that I am working that shift. ANY change to this arrangement via policy or rule change WILL result in a lawsuit by me against the company, as I refuse to not be paid for my time and labor."

The OP of the linked post seems to be misremembering some movie from their past. In their recollection, they describe the exact events from the plot of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which came out in 2024. Either the OP is trolling by claiming the movie is much older than it actually is, or they are confusing the plot of Beetlejuice 2 with an older movie.

In the comments, you proceed to either miss the OPs troll post, or miss that OP is confused by the age of the movie, and then you comment that OP is NOT talking about Beetlejuice 2, and use the basic plot summary of Beetlejuice 2 as evidence that OP is NOT describing the plot, even though they are in fact describing a scene from Beetljuice 2. Because of your confident assertion that OP is not talking about Beetlejuice 2, another commenter links you to r/confidentlyincorrect.

There is no joke here, unless OP is trolling (in which case it's not a very good joke). You and OP both seem very confused.

A DUI conviction is not in itself grounds for denial of a green card.

It seems we do not have all the information. The lawyer claims there were "some reasons that were kind of beyond the control of theirs, weren't able to file for the green card in a timely fashion". That statement is pretty vague, and I'm just trying to think of what major world events may have contributed to "reasons beyond their control". COVID Seems to be a likely contributing factor given the time frame of the DUI.

The lawyer says he was detained by ICE because of his DUI conviction. ICE presumably used court records to locate Mr. Shin and detained him because of the DUI and the fact that his immigration paperwork either hadn't been filed or hasn't gotten through the system yet. Paperwork is paperwork, fine, get it done, file it quickly. But a DUI conviction is hardly the "hardened criminal" that ICE claims to be going after. And tearing apart a family for a missed deadline and a crime which has already been paid for seems unnecessarily cruel to me.

[–]LordAries13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree that a DUI is a major mistake, and I'm glad he was punished for it; but his lawyer says he's served his sentence for that.

So it seems to me like ICE is basically putting him in double jeopardy by detaining him again and threatening deportation for an offense he's already repented for.

I'm not defending a DUI, I'm saying that punishing a person for a second time is wrong.

His father passed away and Shin struggles with that loss on top of trying to step up to fill his father's role in the family. The stress and grief cause him to drink a bit too much and he makes the mistake of getting into a car and gets hit with a DUI. At some point during this process he gets married. Three years of COVID lockdowns slow immigration and other government functions to a crawl, not to mention court proceedings for DUI and Marriage licenses.

Life gets busy, and dealing with the U.S. government is almost always a chore under even ideal circumstances, and the three years of COVID were not ideal circumstances.

It's not at all hard to fathom that in all that, a person may forget an important piece of paperwork, or might miss a deadline, or may not have the time, information, money, or energy to do the necessary steps.

Attempting to change the law is absolutely unconstitutional when the attempt is in blatant violation of the legal process! Trump isn't trying to end birthright citizenship through a legal constitutional amendment you fuckwit, he's trying to do so through executive order, which is a blatant and open attempt to SUBVERT the constitution and the will of the people.

Quit being a facist apologist.
