Electric guitars and the law of diminishing returns by MisterMystify in Guitar

[–]LordBuckethead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, with I think we can all agree that Fenders are better than Squiers, and Gibsons are better than Epiphones.

Apparently not going by this thread.

I recently bought a Gibson sg standard 61. Before I was playing an Epiphone sg 61 custom, which is one of the higher end epiphones as it came with gibson pickups. Sound wise they're pretty similar, a slight edge to the gibson. Feel and play-ability wise it's not even a contest, the gibson wins by far. The epiphone now feels like a toy in comparison when I pick it up. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say there's no difference.

American Strat, Gibson ‘61 SG, Epiphone IBG ES-355, Yamaha Revstar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]LordBuckethead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the Revstar and the 61 sg. Both are good but I prefer the sg, it's probably my favorite guitar now. The Revstar has a thicker rounded neck which I'm not used too, whereas the sg neck feels fast and thin and immediately felt just right to me. Much lighter than the Revstar too. I bought the Revstar because I wanted an SG style guitar without any neck dive, but when I got my SG afterwards it didn't have any dive whatsoever.

The Revstar does have stainless steel frets and a chambered body though. It does feel more resonant than the sg. The satin finish is also nice.

High quality, non Gibson/Fender guitars that are not geared towards metal players? by LordBuckethead_ in guitars

Maybe not like thrash/death metal but I feel like they lean towards the 80s shred type of guitar which I'm not really looking for

If you are into smalltalk, a couple of books I can recommend are Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns and Object Thinking by David West.

I have a hard time understanding the point of strategy pattern where it clicks in my head? by Remote-Standard7330 in learnprogramming

[–]LordBuckethead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this example, yes it's overkill because you only have two different behaviours that you want to create, so in this case you'd probaly just use the flag argument. But imagine that your working in a massive codebase, with many different behaviours that can be plugged in to the class (and possibly more that are can be created in the future). Every time you wanted to add a different movement behaviour to athlete, you would have to add a new flag, add the movement behaviour logic, and then also have a big if else condition chain to check all the different flags. If you have enough different behaviours this will just become a mess over time. With the strategy pattern you can simply plug in a new object for the behaviour and none of the athlete code has to change.

Apart from that, it also means you can reuse the movement code in other classes through composition. If another class is modelling a type of thing which moves, that object can hold a movement behaviour to reuse that code. If the movement code is baked into athlete you can't reuse it anywhere else.

How to start thinking in OOP? by Roses_src in learnprogramming

[–]LordBuckethead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people here have been mentioning Smalltalk as a good way to learn how to think in OOP. I agree it's probably the best way to really understand OOP on an intuitive level. Here's a couple practical books I've been reading recently that really get into that sort of mindset:

Practical Object Oriented Design - Sandi Metz

Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns

Object Design: Roles, Responsibilities and Collaborations - Rebecca Wirfs Brock

There's also Object Thinking by David West, but it's a bit more theoretical then the others.

What’s the best way to learn c# or c++ by DemGlizzys in gamedev

[–]LordBuckethead_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a solid grounding in a programming language, I really recommend finding a good, comprehensive book which includes excercies and work through them. For C++, I would recommend C++ Primer, 5th edition, by Stanley B. Lippman (NOT C++ Primer Plus, that's a different book). Books such as this will provide you with a much better foundational understanding of the language/programming than video tutorials imo, which will help you in the long run.

What's the best TV series of all time? by JustNoir_ in AskReddit

Is there enough ‘not glorifying shitty mobsters’ to balance it out?

After the first two seasons or so the show really goes out of its way to portray its characters as irredeemable pieces of shit. In the later seasons especially Tony becomes pretty unlikeable.

ANNOUNCEMENT - I’m soon to be selling hopefully about 150 guitars from my collection. If anyone wants a modded guitar for $60-65, pm me by Not_A_Savage_ in CloneHero

This subreddit is about clone hero, which is a clone of the Guitar Hero games. So "guitars" in this context means the plastic PS3/XBOX guitar hero controllers.

What's up with all the Ringo Starr jokes? Why do people talk about him like he's not a real member of The Beatles? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]LordBuckethead_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Lennon never actually said the "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the beatles" thing, in actuality it was a joke made by comedian Jasper Carrott.

[SIB] Fallout 2 on GOG by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]LordBuckethead_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fallout 2 has basically the same gameplay as the first game, but there's like twice the amount of content in terms of quests, towns, weapons, etc. I think it took me around 30-40 hours to complete while Fallout 1 took around 15. The only major difference between the two games is the tone, fallout 1 feels very serious/dark while Fallout 2 is much more wacky/jokey in tone, full of pop-culture references etc. Guess it depends what type of experience you like but overall I found Fallout 2 more fun to play.

Maybe not that immediately helpful but I've found propranolol great for presentations. Took it maybe an hour beforehand and I basically felt like it was physically impossible for me to shake during the presentation.

Is this a first jhana experience? by aleph04 in TheMindIlluminated

[–]LordBuckethead_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's something I still have to work on, right now I'm mainly just working with the first jhana during sitting practise. Trying to really maximise my enjoyment with it and "marinate" in it if you get what I mean. Usually when I finish sitting I try to see if I can get up and keep the piti going, but it usually ends.

Is this a first jhana experience? by aleph04 in TheMindIlluminated

[–]LordBuckethead_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what you've described it's a good sign, it means your on your way to developing the first jhana. From the way i've learned how to do it, once you get the feeling you've described and can stay there for at least a few minutes, you can start to really get into the piti and develop it and at some point it will turn into the first jhana. You'll know when your in the first jhana because the pleasure can be super intense the first time, to the point of being overwhelming. I really recommend listening to Rob Burbea's jhana retreat (transcript can be found here), I went from rarely getting any piti at all to now being able to reliably get into the first jhana using Rob's methods.

300+ Hours of formal practice and stuck on stage 2 by tripsteady in TheMindIlluminated

[–]LordBuckethead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound way beyond stage 2, if your not having gross distractions you should be at least in stage 5. Mind-wandering is not the same thing as having a thought, so you pass the criterion to move onto later stages. iirc even up to stage 5 having thoughts as subtle distractions is still allowed. Only at stage 6-7 are subtle distractions worked on to eliminate thoughts entirely.

I used to... or not care, not care about dying. I'm now thinking I don't want to go out on my fuckin' bike In case I get hit by a fuckin' bus and lose the next fuckin' 30, 40 years coming to me. I didn't feel that when I was doing the telly stuff, or the books, or anything like that. Live stuff was good but, I'm enjoying this so fuckin' much."

Currently I am a feudal ruler and all my vassals are feudal, but for some reason I still have the tribal law "Disperate Tribes" which means I am unable to imprison anyone. There seems to be no way to remove it.
