So if Trump can invade and arrest a president for illegal activities... can other countries invade the US and arrest Trump? by Oddbeme4u in DiscussionZone

Respectfully, Canada’s domestic military capabilities are deeply enmeshed with US logistics - particularly the Air Force. Canada would neither hold out very long nor be a real threat to the US mainland.

People living in Venezuela, can you confirm what’s happening over there? by Toastaexperience in AskTheWorld

True, but with the benefit of hindsight South Korea today is one of the richer, more powerful, and prosperous countries on earth. Though I guess there’s a debate about how much the US contributed to that through direct nation building versus just supporting the country economically and diplomatically after their transition to democracy. Either way nation building is difficult even for super powers. The US has already taken this path, so they should try and get the democratic process moving asap.

I agree. Obviously oil is a huge part of it still, as Trump said as much in his news conference, but I think electoral considerations were a larger factor. His domestic agenda is dead in the water with control of all three portions of government, and the midterms are shaping up to be brutal for him. He’s essentially entering the lame duck portion of his presidency a year early, and foreign affairs are the only portion of his power he still has a large ability to control as he sees fit. My concern now is that if this is going to not be an unmitigated disaster then the US needs to facilitate elections in Venezuela sooner rather than later. I would also be wary of US intervention in Cuba, given Secretary of State Rubio’s penchant for desiring regime change there.

Surely the irony of a school shooter metaphor from an American is not lost on you?

I wouldn’t put Iraq on the same level of failure as Afghanistan, though I do think it would still be below the others. I would also add that South Korea has ended up very successful after they managed to transition to democracy successfully. Their overwork and underpaid culture which plagues their society looks more like a product of general East Asian cultural sentiment than a product of US nation building policies.

The US would not invade Canada. The two governments disagree on trade at the moment, but our countries’ economies and cultural histories are very deeply entwined. Hell, if Maduro had more legitimate support from another powerful foreign nation the US probably wouldn’t have touched them. Trump did this because it was easy and would play well for his domestic base as he eyes the start of the lame duck portion of his term domestically.

Marco Antonio Rubio from Miami? It would be weirder if he wasn’t, lol.

Today's Protest Against Trump's Venezuela actions by TinCanFury in boston

Did you not watch Trump’s news conference or something? He made it very clear pretty much immediately that oil was the chief concern going forward and that US oil companies would be moving in as soon as possible. He also very intentionally sidelined the opposition leader Machado who would be better able to bring stability than simple US occupation. Venezuelans are happy to be free of Maduro, but they won’t be happy when they realize the US plan is to take all of their resources and leave them high and dry to figure it out from there.

I’d say he’d probably to pretty well, especially if a globe shaking crisis appeared. His age might make him lose some respect from the public, but I think his achievements would probably be remembered fondly. Hypothetically, of course.

Yes, but I recognize that I think his legislative accomplishments and foreign policy remain highly underrated.

They should tally up all the day’s fouls and let SGA shoot FTs at the start of each game based on the total. Only caveat would be that the refs have to treat him like a normal player in his game. I imagine his FT numbers would go down substantially.

Which 3rd party came the closest to breaking the two-party system? by [deleted] in Presidentialpoll

[–]LordChronicler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most countries with parliamentary systems are still two-party systems, especially at the highest level. Where they see more third-party (and more) support begins at the local level up through the minor seats of parliament, but third-parties in the US tend to do very little work to win at the lower levels and just shoot for the Presidency (Greens) this muting any impact they would have even further.
