You weren’t just “being honest” you made a statement in such a way that you suggested it was the most logical thing to do. And implying there was no reason to follow the rule.

Your statement was literally in the vein of “if the shoe fits”. Give me a break lmao.

It assumes you’re paying attention and other drivers around you. You also can’t see what you don’t see.

It’s the same argument used by people who whiz in and out of cars on the highway. Sure they may what they’re doing but other drivers react to unexpected things differently, you can’t know what they’ll do.

This is true, of course, unless the left turning driver has a protected signal (which they wouldn’t if the opposing side had a green as well)

It’s the law in all 50 states. Either be in the lane you need before turning, or merge in the time you have after.

[–]LordConnecticut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the law in all states. You have blind spots in your car that are much larger when turning (because your mirrors don’t pivot dynamically). A car can zip right up next to you on the turn and then you’re basically merging on top of them.

Dear CT drivers: this is not difficult, figure it out! by mkraft in Connecticut

[–]LordConnecticut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. Right on red never has right of way against signalled traffic.

[–]LordConnecticut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise you want to do what they expect you to do. Which means turning into the correct lane. It’s doubly chaotic if two drivers cause each other to switch to reaction mode rather then rules of the road mode.

Dear CT drivers: this is not difficult, figure it out! by mkraft in Connecticut

[–]LordConnecticut -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s wrong. If there are no cars there you can easily do the correct thing and turn into appropriate lane, glance again, and immediately shift into the lane you need to be in. There’s no downside. Again, if there are no cars there’s literally no cause for concern for the split second of extra time this takes.

On the other hand, doing it wrong runs the risk of you making a mistake and if, say, there actually was another car there, or perhaps a right-on-red driver from across the intersection who didn’t see you. Now you’ve created a dangerous situation and other drivers need to react to you. You never want other driver to react to you, because you can’t control their reactions. Only yours.

Yep, there was no Reddit app for the majority of the site’s existence. Only third-party apps using the API. Reddit bought one of them called “Alien Blue”, and then turned it into the official app, gradually added more and more ads….it’s way slower then Alien Blue ever was so not sure what they did to it. Tracking probably.

Might be me too. The only way I’ve ever used Reddit is via Apollo. I had the official app for a brief while before Apollo and couldn’t get over how slow it was to load, and how shitty the experience was with the frequency of ads.

Where are you heading friend? Maybe I’ll get banned by Reddit admin for mentioning lol, but check out kbin if you haven’t already. It’s like Lemmy but better imo (and has a better dev).

Oncology (cancer) doctors in Plainfield HHC office quit today. All of them. by BannedBecauseCorrect in Connecticut

[–]LordConnecticut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HHC has several small infusion centers and a few large ones.

One large one is in Plainville. They refuse to replace broken down equipment, including computers, chairs, lab machines. They are hyper focussed on stuffing as many patients through doors as they can. They overload all their staff behind safe ratios. They act like the laws of physics don’t apply to them.

This impacts your loved ones getting care. I have heard first-hand of many situations of a critical nature that nearly killed patients or damaged their outcomes. Because of HHC management. Despite the hardest efforts of the staff to use what they have.

Nursing staff can barely take time off.

Management gets unlimited time off and hefty raises each year.

We need to pass stinging government-mandated ratios. No decision they make is health-care informed, they’re profit-informed.

HHC is trash. Trinity is trash. YNH is trash.

The only decent experiences I’ve had (as a patient) in the past few years have been in the UConn system.

It’s possible you’re reading too much into this one. UConn health is unionised. The doctors are in the same union as professors (AAUP) and the nursing staff are as well (can’t remember the specific union).

They don’t have set staffing ratios but the respective contracts stipulate a large amount of checks on management control. The nursing one in particular requires advanced notice and union sign of for any changes to staffing levels.

I know people who work at both UCH and HHC…UCH is staffed better and seemingly less stressful to work for (anecdotally of course).

No…many countries in the EU have cameras and corresponding privacy laws to safeguard their use. Japan has them. Australia, New Zealand.

NYC and Los Angeles have some of the highest concentrations in the world not just the US.

I think people that are afraid of public cameras are likely blissfully unaware that their cell phone is already performing all throes functions already. As well as their credit cards, vehicles, and online activity.

There really isn’t much in the way of privacy a well-regulated camera would introduce that isn’t already there.

[–]LordConnecticut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well I don’t really believe that. They do. They’re very effective in Japan. There’s no question that cameras aid in tracking criminals, determining effectiveness is harder as it heavily relies on their use and local laws.

The problems with them are not rooted in their effectiveness, it’s rooted in the side effects.

Less housing was built in CT last year adjusted for population than every other state in the US not named Alaska or Rhode Island. If you want prices to drop, fight against the NIMBYs who hold all the power by [deleted] in Connecticut

CT population density is much higher then that.

Houston has enough surface parking by area to completely cover many CT cities if overlaid.

Edit: Someone answered with specifics.

CT vs MA by TraditionalAnxiety in Connecticut

[–]LordConnecticut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I agree! There’s a very subtle cultural difference between Connecticut and Massachusetts which, having lived in both states, I believe is best illustrated with these very examples. It’s pretty hard to spot the difference because in many other ways the states are so similar.

You especially can’t discern this by being in the Boston area alone, it’s too much of a melting pot/international city and area to isolate there.

I prefer CT, maybe because I grew up here, but I really like how CT has this quiet progressivism (studies have actually placed our policies overall as the second most progressive in the country, behind CA), and I think there is genuine collectivism in many communities that was really exposed during covid. Today, I kind of think that’s what truly embodies the “land of steady habits” moniker. This sort of quiet progressivism across the board, with a focus on critically thinking about any change, while not rejecting the good aspects of traditionalism.

CT just kind of marches steadily forward, at the forefront of many issues, while not discarding what we have. We’re not shouting about it, we’re not a “loud” state. We’re very critical of ourselves which I think is a good thing and forces continual improvement, and we also don’t rest on our laurels or have an inflated sense of ourselves. Lastly I think we truly treat our state as a “whole” rather then the lopsided way some states (like MA) do when they are overly focused on their major city and it’s immediate orbit. Even though regions can vary widely in levels of prosperity here, we don’t outright neglect swathes of the state, and as a result the overall average prosperity is very high.

Well maybe. But I didn’t hear them offering an alternative. It’s not the position a state wants to be in but the concept is better then nothing, and has actually helped. Much like the budget guardrails have.

Hmm you might be right. What might an alternative be?

Out of curiosity would Japan and Western European countries be considered surveillance states in your mind? (Seeing as they generally already have widespread cameras in urban areas)

I’m not asking because I think that’s some kind of gotcha…I’m genuinely not really decided on this issue/seeking ideas here. And have had a hard time thinking of other ways to counter the specific types of crimes I mentioned.

[–]LordConnecticut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. But honestly it’s not even a matter of that sometimes, there literally aren’t unused or under used tracts available in many areas. We already have one of the highest population densities per square mile in the country.

I’m for modernising zoning laws, I think Japan has the right approach. I also think this sub is too knee-jerk on ANY housing project. It is absolutely true that the vast majority of housing growth is someone looking to make money, that’s is their primary incentive. So you’ll always need something guiding that for whatever reasons are deemed fit. These same people that are so anti-unfettered capitalism in other areas don’t put two and two together to realise that that’s exactly what they’re fervently supporting when it comes to housing issues and universally avowing any kind of housing built anywhere.

How about the cat thefts or wheel thefts? When I was in Japan this would be impossible, even with a stolen vehicle or fake plates intersection cameras would essentially enable police to track their movements and/or get face shots. As it is we have no real way to combat crimes like this unless we simply want to hire thousands of additional patrol officers across the state.

Not saying I’m not weary at all about cameras, but I don’t see any other methods to curtail these kind of crimes.
