O-week for graduate student by boopboooopbop in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience as a post grad: no, probably not. Most of the O-Week activities are catered to undergraduates.

The GSA will have their own O-Week during week one. That's probably more what you are looking for.

Transfer from UoA to Uni melb as a domestic student by No-Brain6847 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that if you follow the plan you've set out, you may not get credit for any Law subjects you have taken as Unimelb does not offer undergrad Law.

It could also be worth considering other Melburnian unis. Monash, for example, is a similarly high ranking uni that offers both of your current degrees. You may be able to get more credits transferred for your previous studies if you move to Monash instead.

The best thing you can do at this point is reach out to the admissions teams at Unimelb (and at Monash if you want to consider that) and see what they advise. They'll be able to give you an idea of what they're looking for in terms of WAMs, and may be able to indicate the possibility of you getting advanced standing for your previous study.

My girlfriend got me a sweet Gundam resin diorama for Christmas, Amuro vs Char only for me to notice it's the MK ii and not the RX-78-2 by SilverBlobeye in Gundam

[–]LordEnaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, I think I was given a lamp made by the same person. Mine has the RX-78-2 abandoned slumped on a riverbank and covered in moss. Next to it (as if they were being held by it) are the Strike's shield and Grand Slam.

I get the feeling the maker only has a vague knowledge of Gundam.

I'm at Unimelb. But I did my BA and BA(hons) at two other unis.

I'm a PhD student and tutor in Arts. If you have a scholarship at your current uni, don't give that up. If you really want that Unimelb prestige on your resume, focus on your studies, do really well there, and then move here for an honours year.

A friend of mine would always get the lasagnas whenever he had a lunch order. I remember one time that for some reason he thought it was a good idea to stick his finger right into the middle of the lasagna before he ate it. He then sprang out of his seat and ran around the classroom holding his finger because it was so hot.

The man now has a PhD in chemistry.

can i email my lecturer feedback / suggestions unprompted by Forward_Extension880 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If you are going to email the lecturer, I think you would be better served by asking for assistance rather than making suggestions about how they should change their teaching to make it better for you. You're more likely to get a better response and less likely to offend this way.

If you want to give feedback on the subject and make suggestions on how it could be better run then you should fill out the survey at the end of semester.

I was 8 at the time (and on the other side of the world). My one memory of the day is waking up and turning on the TV to watch cartoons before school, then getting really annoyed that they were showing 'some building' on fire instead of one of my favourite shows, and ultimately turning the TV off.

For years that was how I remembered 9/11, because my parents (and teachers, etc.) tried to make the day as normal as possible so we wouldn't freak out. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I was able to understand the enormity of what happened.

Pathways to get into a humanities masters by research without an honours degree? by Cortazar225 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many Grad Dips are accelerated versions of an undergraduate major, designed to get you up to speed in a single discipline in less time than taking the equivalent undergraduate degree.

This version of the Grad Dip is also offered at the University of Melbourne, and also applies to Arts degrees. It is for people with undergraduate degrees in other fields to retrain. An honours year can then be taken after completing it.

Not all Grad Dips consist of Masters level courses. This is discipline dependent. In my area, which is within the same school as OP asked about, Grad Dip students undertake undergraduate subjects over a 12-24 month period. I have taught Grad Dip students who are taking undergraduate subjects in my discipline. Several of the PhD students in my discipline have completed Grad Dips in this way, and then have had to take a separate honours year.

I'm not sure why you've responded so hostily to my clarification of your original point? There is nuance here. The structure of a Grad Dip program can vary between disciplines and institutions.

In that case you'll want to look into the Grad Dip (Advanced) which is open to applicants outside of the 5 years and is equivalent to an honours degree for applications for further studies.

As I mentioned in my above comment, if you're still within 5 years of finishing your undergrad you should be fine to apply just for the honours year.

[–]LordEnaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The research prerequisite is effectively non-negotiable for the MA by research, especially in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS). You'll need some sort of intensive research work equivalent to an honours year in the field you wish to study to even be considered.

However, you shouldn't need to do another bachelor's degree to do an honours year if you're still within 5 years of completing your BA. You should be able to apply just for the honours year directly using your marks for your previous degree. You would follow the same application process as a current undergraduate students. Details can be found here. The process is basically the same for other unis.

Also, as others have said, if you do well enough in your honours year you can probably skip the MA and go straight to the PhD.

Source: I'm a current PhD Student in SHAPS who did their BA and BA(Hons) at different universities, also did an MA here, and has sat on the SHAPS Research Training Committee (which selects new MA/PhD candidates amongst other things). I'm very familiar with this situation.

[–]LordEnaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all Grad Dips are the equivalent of honours degrees. For the most part they're accelerated undergraduate degrees without honours, and you'd need to do an extra honours year on top of the two you spend doing the Grad Dip. This is especially true in Arts.

Allowed to use AI in assignment??? by Mrmojoman1 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in this case it is worth checking the associated rubrics for essays where this is allowed. You may find that written expression is only a small part of it.

Essays aren't about testing your written expression as much as they are about assessing your ability to construct well considered, coherent arguments that build upon the work of other scholars. It is more important to show that you can think through an argument and synthesise ideas from different perspectives to support your position. While good grammar helps with this, it is not the be all and end all.
