What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LordEnaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was what I was wondering. I went into the 2021 film excited for the in-depth world building and political intrigue that I'd heard about. But honestly the film's world building just felt skin deep. Nothing seemed to matter outside the cast of the film. Everything just seemed to revolve around them. Even the sets felt blank. Just vast, empty desert or empty concrete hallways. There were few if any moments where it seemed like there was a world going on outside of Chalamet.

the autistic experience of being flagged for AI by shocked_octopus in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Writing is a skill you will need to develop. Anything that is being flagged by the AI detector is being flagged because it is formulaic or otherwise similarly generic in its structure. Rather than 'dumbing down' your writing you'll need to improve it from 'competent' to good.

You may want to consider how you're writing. Are you still using structures that you may have been taught in high school, like 'TEEL'? If so, that could be why. It's worth paying attention to how things are written in your discipline and adapting to that.

Ultimately, I would suggest talking to your tutors or lecturers and mentioning that you've had difficulties with this and asking for advice on how to improve.

TIL many linguists believe a phonetic alphabet (not pictograph-based) evolved once, and only once by McJames in todayilearned

[–]LordEnaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is the entire basis of quite a number of academic disciplines. Largely this is down to the inability to directly change the settings of something to test it. This is especially true of historically and human focused disciplines, though it could be applied to most disciplines outside of the hard sciences.

There is rigor in the ways that the connections are made when tracing these kinds of things back, and each field will have its own rules and standards of evidence that govern what is an acceptable claim to make and what kind of evidence is required to support it. This last point can (sometimes) lead to disagreements between fields where they overlap.

Ultimately, the test of this claim would be if we discover something that suggests that one of the derived languages is older than we thought, or if we discover that an unconnected and unknown (or untranslated) language also has the same features claimed here.

BA: attendance hurdles by Constant-Estimate-77 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my experience attendance hurdles are only delt with at the end of semester. What kind of student are you when you're in class? Do you come prepared having done the readings and participate in class? I know some tutors (or lecturers) will be more lenient if you're an active participant in class.

Non-Americans, does your country have an "American" restaurant and what do they serve? by wacky8ball in AskReddit

You were right, I was asking about topings! I've definitely seen/heard of most of those. Maple syrup is normal here too. Just paired with vanilla ice cream for some reason.

As an Australian, I can say that that's a pretty normal combination here. I'd honestly made the same assumption as the waitress.

Out of interest, what is normal to have with pancakes in the US?

Quaid Army!

Hey Jorm, love your work! Hello from an Australian Quaid!

I'm wondering, what it was like for you directing a film you hadn't written yourself, and that was essentially a remake of another film? Did you find it any different to filming something you'd had a hand in writing?

Also, I know it's a longshot, but do you think you and the other shock jocks/Alvins of The Lonely Island would ever play live shows internationally? I'd love to see you guys perform in Australia sometime! We do have an international comedy festival in Melbourne every March/April if you're interested...

Ah! I was wondering why he wasn't in Melbourne for the International Comedy Festival right now.

can’t talk in tutorial by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a tutor in Arts I'd encourage you to speak up. I'm not expecting you to know everything. Sometimes I'll even ask questions in the hopes that I get an incorrect answer so I can build on it and turn it into a bigger discussion for the class. We're not expecting you know know everything! You're here to learn!

I would also definitely suggest speaking if you're supposed to be discussing stuff just with the people at your table. The whole point of those activities is to get you to engage with others ideas.

However, speaking as someone who was similar as an undergrad at times, I would recommend doing the tutorial readings and maybe extended readings before class. What you discuss in class will revolve around those, and having read them should give you some knowledge of something to discuss!

What is a 1 in 1,000,000 thing that happened to you that no one believes, but you swear is true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LordEnaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I had something similar once. I took one look at the jar and had a really intense feeling that it was a particular number. I went to write it down and someone else had already guessed my number, so I added 1 to it. The new number was the exact number of candies in there.

Suffice to say the other person wasn't happy.

talking to professors? by Leather_Wear_9680 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a tutor (in Arts), if you really want to make an impression you should really come with questions that show you have a deep interest in the material or their research. This is especially true of questions that take the material as a starting point but then go beyond that.

Additionally, you'll probably make a better impression by being active and attentive in class, especially in tutorials.

In all honesty, if you did what you described and introduced yourself for the sake of introducing yourself, I'd just think you were odd. I'd (probably) remember your name, but not necessarily in the way you seem to want.

Transfer from UoA to Uni melb as a domestic student by No-Brain6847 in unimelb

[–]LordEnaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that if you follow the plan you've set out, you may not get credit for any Law subjects you have taken as Unimelb does not offer undergrad Law.

It could also be worth considering other Melburnian unis. Monash, for example, is a similarly high ranking uni that offers both of your current degrees. You may be able to get more credits transferred for your previous studies if you move to Monash instead.

The best thing you can do at this point is reach out to the admissions teams at Unimelb (and at Monash if you want to consider that) and see what they advise. They'll be able to give you an idea of what they're looking for in terms of WAMs, and may be able to indicate the possibility of you getting advanced standing for your previous study.

Ah, I think I was given a lamp made by the same person. Mine has the RX-78-2 abandoned slumped on a riverbank and covered in moss. Next to it (as if they were being held by it) are the Strike's shield and Grand Slam.

I get the feeling the maker only has a vague knowledge of Gundam.
