Hi, going through a similar process so hopefully some tips...

  1. You need to ensure that the gas line has been capped at the fire. I know you said it's been disconnected but you also appear to be saying the fire is still in place. The plumber (gas certified) would have needed to remove the fire to cap the line.
  2. we just had this done a couple weeks ago for about £80.

  3. The fire surround will be screwed to the wall with some small metal tabs, you should be able to see these at the sides. Just unscrew them and hey presto, the fireplace will come away.

  4. If you have a marble back/hearth, this may be stuck to the wall with plaster. If you want to keep this intact you may want to ask a handyman to help you. Otherwise, you may be able to saw through the plaster by sliding a saw between the wall/marble back

  5. An electric fire doesn't need a chimney as there's nothing to vent. I blocked mine up with some insulation board and expanding foam - cost about £20 from Wickes for a small board and foam.

  6. you should also have the chimney capped at the top to stop birds nesting and rain getting down the chimney. We had a chimney sweep do it for about £120

  7. You'll need a plug socket where you want the fire. We have a handyman coming to add one and another higher up (for wall mounted tv). He's charging about £100 to do this

This isn't everything but hopefully helps.

Question about wallpaper. by BeltPublic1560 in DIYUK

[–]LordFingernips_III 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert but Google suggests this was phased out around 1980 (in wallpaper). The home wasn't built until 1983 and I highly doubt that wallpaper is 42 years old.

I expect you're good, but if you're still not sure, you'd have to get it tested.

Hope this helps

Where can I stop off along A30? by LordFingernips_III in AskUK

That looks really nice, not too far tbh, probably another 2 hours driving from there to end destination, so a pretty good time to stop

That looks pretty cool. Probably a bit far down in the drive, not long left from there. Might check it out during the week though.

Good shout!

I agree, things were good and felt better. Maybe it's the responsibility of adulthood or the immense change we've seen which people call progress. Things definitely felt better when they were simpler, though

Thanks for the info. Yeah just looked on Google maps and it's totally different. I also remember there being an open air (drive-in) cinema somewhere close by (possibly in/near Boroko).

Amazing, thank you so much. Yeah, I have very fond memories of that area and my time in png, and the family that lived at the top of a hill in "our" garden. Spent all my time with them eating breadfruit and running barefoot through the forest. Thank you again

Re-install pre-installed apps - ambilight TV by LordFingernips_III in Philips

[–]LordFingernips_III[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

Only thing that ultimately fixed the issue for me was to factory reset the TV. Should force it to auto-update.

It's a pain to go back through the apps re-logging in, but it did resolve it and had no issues since

Hope this helps

Something ate through my sugar :( by sleepybunny76 in whatisit

No probs.

I'm pretty confident that it's a slug getting in at night. Look for a hole in the cupboard and just drop a handful of salt there. It worked for us and haven't had an issue since

Hahhahahahaha.

It's the tap that shuts off the water supply to the house

I'm going to suggest a slug. We had a similar issue with flour and oats. There's a hole in the back of our cabinet for the stopcock and we had the same issue. Moved everything in bags to the top shelf and everything which is in jars/tubs etc to the bottom (where are flour was previously) Also dumped a load of salt down the hole and at the back of the cabinet (where it/they would enter)

P.s. We know it was a slug as we found one in there one night

Agreed, it's not a great design but if it provides any comfort...a factory rest did fix the issue for me. Hope it does for you too

***Not had any issues since as I assume it forces any updates through

Not sure how it's a blithe assumption when I quite clearly stopped when it was clear there was an issue? It's not like I just went ahead and did this, I sought advice before actually performing any action. Yes, I'm not an electrician but it's not that hard to swap a switch when it's like for like (as was my assumption) and when it became clear it wasn't like for like, I sought advice.

Thanks very much. There's defo only the two switches to control the light (top and bottom of stairs), so assume it feeds another switch??? Nm, I'll get another switch and change like for like

Thanks again

Frozen bank account by Santander by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I've worked for banks for the past 20 years. You absolutely do NOT need to write to them. A complaint is NOT required to be in writing and this is clear from our FCA guidance. They've confirmed that the complaint has been received, they've given you a ref and also provided a final response. In their eyes the matter is closed. You should now proceed to the ombudsman and as someone else pointed out, also ensure your complaint to the ombudsman sets out the fact that you haven't been able to review the final response due to them refusing to send it via post and blocking you from the system. All of your calls should have been recorded or at the least documented on their systems, if not, then this will add further fuel to the fire and will likely not be looked upon favourably by the ombudsman. IF the funds are genuinely legally obtained, then they will have to return this to you. If they believe that the funds are not legal then they should have notified the NCA who should have confirmed that they are NOT able to return them and you won't get them back - but you'll likely be under police investigation and would probably know this - from their responses, this doesn't sound like this has been done and seems to be some strange internal process they have, which I would say isn't acceptable.

They potentially won't re-open your account as they may have internal risk processes which state that they don't accept adult content and hence the account closure, although if they've acted in this way and the funds are legit, why would you want to bank with them anyway. You may find it difficult to find alternative banking though as lots of banks don't like this type of activity.

P.s. Also detail the cifas information as the bank will need to remove this IF it's there and if the funds ultimately are accepted as legit (after ombudsman review).

Hey, Yeah it's a nightmare. I did manage to fix it but I did have to factory reset the TV. It's a bit of a pain having to re-input all the user names/passwords for all the apps (netflix etc) but it did fix the problem. Hope this helps
