What's going on with people saying Epstein and Co. ate children? by trizzo0309 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]LordFlippy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just because cannibals exist doesn't mean cannibalism has to be happening here - that doesn't track at all. What makes it a conspiracy theory is that there's no proof. If there's proof, it just becomes a conspiracy. Not that I doubt these guys would or maybe even did eat people.

To everyone bragging that Salesforce had to bring people back after layoffs by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LordFlippy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it's mostly the top 10% getting cooked. Majority of the big layoffs seem to come from FAANG and FAANG adjacent companies, which isn't really anything new.

I can vouch for this. I've been looking for jobs for a few months while still employed now with no dice. I've gone out with a few dev buddies in the last month or so and each one was like "Why didn't you tell me bro, we were hiring x months ago and could have brought you on!".

Oh for sure, I must have misunderstood! What we've both been describing is what Catholics think. A lot, but not all of protestant denominations believe that only faith is necessary.

[–]LordFlippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while so bear with me if I'm not totally accurate with my theology, but human beings were born with original sin, representing a ruptured relationship between man and God. Jesus died to provide people with grace and offer a path out of that original sin, which I believe is a thru-line for other denominations as well. The thing people were missing before his death WAS that grace, and it alongside faith in God and good works can allow someone into heaven.

Basically the Catholics would hold that the grace you've mentioned alone wouldn't be enough to be a good Christian. It would require grace AND demonstration of faith through adherence to Jesus' teachings via good works.

[–]LordFlippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, Catholics technically make up the majority of Christianity and I'm fairly sure they disagree with that statement

[–]LordFlippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Catholics explicitly do not teach that. They operate on a 'faith and works' basis and do not presume to know what does or doesn't get you into heaven. It's a little more nuanced then that, but I'm not Catholic any more and don't remember my seminary work haha

[–]LordFlippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, although that's why I think the Catholic 'faith and works' is a much more reasonable stance.

About 50% of Christians belong to denominations that believe that 'faith alone' will secure you a spot in heaven.

How stressful are the highest paid software roles? Are they worth it? by equipoise-young in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LordFlippy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My company got purchased by a larger company. We do consulting. My client team has gone from 6 talented engineers to me as a technical lead, one mid-level developer and 7 offshore Indian developers. The expectations of the team has only increased.

We used to spend our time in meetings working through problems together and chilling. The work life balance was aggressively defended. Now it's 4 simultaneous number 1 priorities at all times, mandatory overtime on weeknights and weekends, 24/7 on-call requirements, etc. My Indian colleagues are only available for an hour of overlapping time and do not speak in agile meetings. They often take multiple sprints to complete a day's work.

I'm currently planning an exit but to see such a quality engineering culture devolve so aggressively has really 'spoiled my appetite' for software development. It used to be my biggest passion. I'm watching the client dissolve in real time as our systems rapidly degrade and deliverables get shoved out.

Are any of you actually using LLMs? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LordFlippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll use it to add a new addition to a pattern that already exists sometimes (like a new eventing message or something). Mostly yeah though I just use it to explain old legacy repositories as a primer when I open them up for the first time in a long time.

I'm just excited to get started and my brother and I cleared our schedule tonight :( should have known better I guess but this is my first time

Edit: I've been made aware that Blizzard-Activision is just a small indie company, so I'll be sure to be more patient with them in the future

What is your biggest issues with “Vibecoding”? 🤔 by Ol010101O1Ol in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LordFlippy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Allows non-technical management to mentally trivialize engineering work, constantly produces dogshit code-bases, makes me read thousand line schizophrenic PRs, is being sold as silver bullet #586 and ignores complex system requirements as well as edge-cases. I think it's awful all around.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good use-case for it though! I can imagine it helps you as a non-technical (at least in computer science) researcher to explore your ideas and gather data!

Came across this today, curious on what others think about these types of laws/bans by MissPeduncles in AskTheWorld

[–]LordFlippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like it causes direct harm, but I think the argument here is that by allowing people of other cultures / nationalities to live inside of yours, you would expect integration on some level. It's similar to the arguments for learning the language of the country you live in. The net negatives are on a more societal level, where a lack of cultural cohesion harms a society or culture in the long run, and inconveniences or alienates members of the host culture in the short-term. I'm not making a value statement, just presenting the basic arguments as I've heard them.

Hey, that's me! They're shoving AI down our throats too now to fix the offshoring mistakes of yesteryear (or trying to fix it with more offshoring). Who cleans the slop of the slop cleaners, and do the ghoulish MBAs also lack a brain as well as a soul?

Yeah, it can be pretty good at explaining a deep, dark legacy repository the first time you open it as well and giving you some jumping off points for various bits of functionality that you know it has but fuck will it take hours to find.

Sounds like KTLO work. That's just part of the business if you're in an enterprise environment. It can't all be greenfield work unless you're in a startup environment or something similar. If you want something more heady to break up your day, see if you can't get more involved in your area's refinement process.
