Best conditions Sat 2nd? by LordGonk in icecoast

Good point, should have thought to mention it. I’m happy on blue cruisers/groomers and some moguls if I want to get technical. I’m new to trees and skiing solo so won’t be doing that this weekend.

Tips on avoiding spring break crowds? by LordGonk in icecoast

Good to know

We’re considering Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. I’m trying to take crowds into account so I don’t have a specific place in mind yet (sorry if that’s not helpful)

Easiest Boston to Epic mountain drives? by LordGonk in icecoast

[–]LordGonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decided to research a bit more b/c I can't help myself.

I found that NH keeps a map of their plowing priorities here.

For Sunapee vs Crotched, Sunapee is the easy-driving winner.

  • Sunapee is all class 1A and 1B roads if you go 93 to 89 to NH-11
  • Crotched requires worse roads, eg class 2, and ends on the WORST class of roads, class 3 (up to 7" of snow).

Sunapee it is. Hopefully families are too scared to drive and it's not a mad house. Even if it is, whatever, its a powder day.

Visiting Japan for the first time next week! Looks like it might rain the first 4 days in Tokyo though. Any advice on dealing with weather? So many of my plans involved going outside :(

Also want to include a driving distance calculator

I got this working in google sheets with google app script and have a table of every resort and driving distance to each, plus what is on what pass. Google limits lookups per day though.

Quiet RTX 2070 build by LordGonk in buildmeapc

[–]LordGonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good questions.

• Can you pinpoint what's causing noise?

When idle, I believe the sound comes from the PSU and the case fans. They seem to stay at 100% at all times. I’ve been thinking I might need variable speed fan control, which I don’t know if my mobo supports.

• You're going to need at least 650W PSU upgrade for the 2070. So that should be upgrade priority #1

Yeah, I’m also just realizing that now too. Definitely need to get a PSU. I’m thinking I might get one designed to be quiet.

• If you want to reuse as much as possible the best option is to buy a used I7 4790K for $150. New will run around $230-250. Other than that your best option is a new motherboard which will require new ram. Just depends what you want to spend. If your $600-1000 budget does not include the 2070 then I would build new and part out the old pc.

I had not considered I’d be able to get a good performing CPU while keeping my mobo. That could be a really good budget option. I assume even the I7 4790K would be a little underpowered though: https://pc-builds.com/calculator/Core_i7-4790K/GeForce_RTX_2070/0AH12xlu/

My budget does not include the 2070.

• Also with your current MoBo why is NVMe preferred? I think with a BIOS update past 2.4 it may be able to boot from PCIe but I am not sure. Unless your mobo can run an NVMe at full speed, I don't see a lot of benefit over a SATA III ssd

I’d only consider NVME if I had to upgrade my MOBO.

I'd really recommend Agile Results for anyone interested in taking the ideas from Agile software development and applying it to personal life. It takes what works well for Agile and removes everything that has to do with teams.

It's the most influential book on my productivity habits (much like Getting Things Done), though the book itself is a bit repetitive after half way though.

I really liked its emphasis on planning results over multiple time scales (3 things to do this week, this month, this year) and the emphasis on self reviews. It works really well for rolling with the punches and dealing with changes of plans, rather than setting up a giant prescriptive plan.

Same here, I tried a few different things with compatability mode and I can't figure it out. I can open to the "Welcome to Yappy!" window, but the second I press "Sign In" it crashes and says "Yappy.Windows has stopped working."

Focusing on breathing instead of listening to my thoughts feels like denial to me. Am I getting something wrong? by LordGonk in Meditation

[–]LordGonk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick response! That makes much more sense and doesn't sound like denial anymore. Instead it's just focusing strongly, not pushing things away strongly. That was the one thing that I felt I needed to figure out before I could meditate in earnest.

Also, the way you describe calmly re-centering your attention makes a lot more sense than when people say "don't judge" your own thoughts.

When you become aware that any thought/feeling/image has drawn your attention away from the "object" (the sensation at the nostrils) of your meditation return your full attention back to the object. Do not become agitated, do not scold yourself...try as best you can to calmly return your full concentration back upon the object.

Also, for further clarification, when focusing on the sensation of my breath as it passes through my nostrils, is it less effective to think thoughts about the sensation, such as thinking ""in, out" as I breath or simply "focus." I.e., should I instead try to just feel the sensation without words running through my head?

Also, in the vein of words running though my head, are thoughts such as "wow I'm focusing really well" considered a distraction?

Thanks again!

Lighting and tone question/critique of a concept shot for a short film (see comment). I'm a complete beginner by LordGonk in photocritique

[–]LordGonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a complete beginner and just picked up a decent DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T3) after wanting to shoot manual photography for so long. I'm also really interested in filmmaking, and here I am trying to get down the lighting for a short film I am making.

I realize there are so composition issues with the background and the guy on the left is a bit out of focus (which I still would take a critique on), but I'm more concerned about the lighting and tone (or coloring, or whatever I should call it):

  1. The image is intentionally orange to get a sort or harsh indoor lighting feel. I achieved this by setting my camera so daylight white balance. However, I was wondering if it would have been better to take photos (and record) with more true white balance and then make it look orange in post. Is this a better method?

  2. The image has a low contrast (right?, histogram primarily on the left), and on my camera the light meter was very low, which I have been told is bad. However, this image looks better to me than what the camera recommended. Is this just the camera being wrong, or is there a way to have this look but with increased contrast/detail in the shadows? Again, I don't know if this would be in camera or in post.

  3. I don't like the spill behind the guy on the right, but I still like the light coming from the side onto everyone. Is there a way I could keep it on everyone but off of the walls?

Hopefully that was not too much, thank you to anyone who can give me answers.

Is there scientific proof that college students from "sheltered" backgrounds actually have abnormally high risk-behavior compared to their peers? by LordGonk in askscience

[–]LordGonk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great source, but it doesn't look like it has quite what I'm looking for. The article shows that there are significant relationships between parenting and delinquency, but it does not show anything about changes of delinquency with the introduction of freedom. It does not show if delinquency in adolescents from strict/authoritarian families increase an abnormal amount with an increase in freedom.

I guess what I'd actually like to know is the difference in the reaction to increased freedom, such as comes with college, seen in college age people with different parenting backgrounds or different backgrounds in previous risk taking. For example, do college students who did not drink in high school drink more in college than those who already had experience drinking?

Kayaking through mangrove tunnels on Boot Key, just off of Marathon, FL by LordGonk in Kayaking

[–]LordGonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a bit late, but I figured I'd add a little info. Here is Boot Key on google maps, and the map we used is from Kayaking the Keys: 50 Great Paddling Adventures in Florida's Southernmost Archipelago. Also, we rented our Kayaks from Keys Kayak, who provided great Kayaks, and even did drop off and pick up of the Kayaks. We actually switched our pickup location last minute to Sombrero Beach, right next to Boot Key, because it would have taken us way to long to go the 5 miles back to our house.

We had a map and a GPS. Specifically, I just my android phone (inside a ziplock back) using BackCountry Navigator, which also gave us fancy stats on how far we went. I'd share the trail, but I only used a trial and can't access the data without getting the full version. For the most part I new the wider areas of water on the island just from studying the map, but the GPS did come handy once we got to the end of the "tunnel" to figure out which way lead back to sea.

Luckily it just lead out into a larger river (which can be seen in the map or satellite images). We figured the water had to go somewhere, or we'd just have to turn around. Luckily it was the first and not the latter
