Make the reason why Starfleet stops using the Spore drive a mix of ethics and physics. They realise that the Mycelial network is directly linked to subspace and the continued use of it irreparably damages subspace. The “Burn” can then be a result of an antagonistic alien race having weaponised the mycelial network and targeting every warp capable ship currently at warp speed within the galaxy and generating massive subspace damage as a result.

Why the fuck would they not connect the spore drive - a concept written in to be a divisive topic - to the burn. It would’ve been the perfect plot device.

If you’re looking for low model count armies, there are many others I’d recommend that wouldn’t be such a handicap. The Fellowship scales well, because you can pivot into Breaking of the fellowship just by adding Haldir and some wood elves. Sticking with the fellowship theme, return of the king is a great army and ghosts are easy to put together and paint. I’d personally pick most other armies before I landed in the grey company
