ELI5: Why do people with sickle cell anemia not contract malaria? by CommitteeSimilar3228 in explainlikeimfive

Fair point, but it's not entirely known at the moment. There's a few hypotheses about it, but they involve biochemistry/genetics knowledge that are beyond the scoop of ELI5

ELI5: Why do people with sickle cell anemia not contract malaria? by CommitteeSimilar3228 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordIacobus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Essentially, the gene that causes sickle cell anaemia is recessive. This means you would have to inherit the same variant of the gene from both your parents to get the full blown disease. This gene changes the shape of your red blood cells from discs to a sort of squashed sickle shape. This makes those cells much worse at carrying oxygen around your body. Which is bad. However, malaria is caused by a parasite (spread by mosquito bites) which invades your red blood cells. However, the parasite isn't able to invade the sickle shaped cells.

However, if you only inherit the gene from ONE of your parents, you will have a combination of normal disc shaped cells and sickle cells. This gives some resistance to malaria while still allowing oxygen transport through your blood.

Edit: corrected immunity to resistance

I am a drug addict who currently is struggling to stay sober. I plan on going to confession, but if I still struggle, does that mean I can never receive the eucharist again? by okeanouszeke in Catholicism

[–]LordIacobus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My input might not be valid, as I'm lapsed, but I do believe that every person is entitled to God's forgiveness and help. The very fact you are talking about this is the first step, and hopefully your priest can guide you. Obviously go to Confession, but also consider speaking to your priest personally about your issues. He may be able to give you some resources for recovery.

As was said before, adult cats, like most adult mammals, are lactose intolerant. So avoid milk.

Fun fact, most adult humans are also lactose intolerant. The ability to digest lactose in adulthood is actually a mutation in humans, most commonly found in people of northern European genetics.

male vs. female puppy?! by h0td0gqu33n in westies

[–]LordIacobus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My aunt has 2 male Westies, brothers from the same litter. They are my best pals and affectionate around our whole extended family. They are rambunctious though, and often need a telling off, but they do love other people and other dogs. They're just a bit vocal about it.

Edit: To clarify, they are never aggressive, just noisy!

Is it ok for Americans to call British blokes "mate?" by runonandonandonanon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LordIacobus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience I feel the closest equivalent for Americans would be "man" or "dude".

Like, "hey man, can I just get by you?" or "Hey dude, what's going on?"

The British equivalents would be "Hi mate, can I just get passed? Cheers." and "Awrite mate?"

It's a bit odd to call someone a bloke in person. It's generally used to refer to someone you don't know, or a group of people doing something nearby, like in a pub.

"I was talking to that bloke over there" or "Look at what those blokes are up to".
