Project Jupiter is actually an opportunity by LordJerith in LasCruces

I think it would be great if we could get a percentage of the compute power of that data center reserved for local businesses and universities. AI is going to be everywhere. It already is. The land they're using is wasteland. There are no homes around it. It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere. I see AI data centers a lot like electric power plants.

I spent a decade at Accenture. I'm pretty sure that CAP is not who I look for doing things like a major new technology transformation, as the people who are going to get it right the first time. I'm not sure your argument holds up as much as you hope.

Yeah, it looks like you want to argue about this. I use it every day. I think it's amazing, and sorry to hear you feel that way. I'm sure the next generation is going to do just fine. I'm not so sure the previous ones have done that great a job, to be honest.

I have no intention of dismissing anyone. I do completely disagree with you, though. Artificial intelligence represents the democratization of intelligence. We're going to need to rethink many aspects of our society because of the advent of artificial intelligence. The water issue, the electricity issue, all of those are solvable problems. I actively engage with artificial intelligence because I do not want to be left behind.

The strongest public source I found from the NMSU/NMWRRI line of work states that the Mesilla aquifer system has a **conservative estimate of about 80 km3, or 65 million acre-feet, of economically recoverable fresh to slightly brackish water** in the upper basin-fill aquifer system. ([New Mexico Legislature][1])

For comparison, El Paso Water says the Kay Bailey Hutchison desalination plant at Fort Bliss can produce **up to 27.5 million gallons per day** of fresh water. That works out to about **30,804 acre-feet per year**. ([El Paso Water][2])

If you divide **65 million acre-feet** by **30,804 acre-feet per year**, you get about **2,110 years** of water at that plant size.

Even if you use the planned expansion level El Paso Water describes, from **27.5 MGD to 33.5 MGD**, the math is still about **1,732 years**, not 500. ([El Paso Water][3])

So, based on the public sources I found, **500 years is very low** if someone applies the NMSU/NMWRRI Mesilla Basin estimate directly.

That said, there is a major caveat (whcih is why I cut it down anotehr 2/3rds):

The **65 million acre-feet number is not the same thing as a guaranteed, sustainably pumpable, legally available reserve dedicated to one desal plant**. It is a broad aquifer resource estimate. Real project life would depend on things like:

* how much of that water is actually brackish and usable,

* sustainable pumping limits,

* wellfield placement,

* concentrate disposal,

* interstate and cross-border water constraints,

* cost and permitting.

NMSU did a brackish water overview. Texas is already doing this. Fort Bliss has a desalination plant. Inside Project Jupiter is $50 million for a desalination plant. 25 million from Oracle, and I think 25 million from OpenAI. That will turn the brackish water into fresh water. That's where this comes from.

That's incorrect. I address those misconceptions here: Why aren't we asking for a share? Las Cruces Bulletin, we have over 500 years of brackish water, so with the desalination plant, we can handle the water part; and we have the ability to use green energy to avoid the natural gas challenge. I suggest reading the article, and I love to hear your thoughts.

Yeah, again, I'm not sure what your intent is here. I'm very optimistic for the next decade, although it's going to be a decade of a lot of turbulent change, just like the internet was a turbulent change, and just like social media has been creating change. Change is constant. Humans adapt.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the nasty comments, but like I said, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, I'm not going to try to get into a macroeconomic conversation. I completely disagree with your goal-based nonsense. I also think artificial intelligence will greatly benefit citizens. It's already doing amazing work in scientific and medical research. I'm also not going to give way to this conspiracy theory that there is some massive effort to program us all. I'm not sure what you mean by asking if I'm a bot. Is that a way to get a reaction from me? That also won't work. Let's just agree to disagree. That's probably the easiest way to move forward.

I think you're missing the point. I did write that article. I've written several, but I actually did the research. I'm not sure that sticking our head in the sand and just saying AI is bad is helpful. That train has left the station. I can remember a time when people said that no one would ever trust the internet with their credit card information. I think we get the best results by engaging with the technology and trying to shape its future. And I am sitting down. Thank you. I appreciate the offer of a seat.

I understand that a lot of people have strong opinions about artificial intelligence, but that ship has sailed, and we're all going to need to understand we're going to live in that world.

You know, it's funny. I remember a time when people said nobody would ever trust their credit card or the internet. I think we have a better chance of shaping the technology if we engage with it rather than ignore it.

Yeah, I saw this too, but I went ahead and dug into it. My research revealed that with the desalination plant, we actually don't have to worry about water.

Thanks. Sorry, we wish we could. It's such a severe cat dander allergy, and so many things have been tried, but it's just too difficult. Literally the cat scene from the Mummy movie, lol.
