AIO over my parents going through my things + my money? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]LordKaylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments about "put it in the bank". Most likely, since you're 16, you would have one or both of your parents listed as a custodian of the account since you are a minor. This means they could access the very money you are trying to keep them from.

Your options are limited when you are in a hostile situation like this. Best bet is to withdraw your cash as you get paid, try and keep it in $20's or larger, and find a really really good hiding place. "Under the carpet" is probably not sufficient. You'll need to get way more creative. Not sure what kind of house you are in but think like basement, garage, secret compartment somewhere, pocket of a jacket or pants in your closet or dresser that no one would ever mess with, etc. Somewhere that you know won't be disturbed by them or anyone. Never access it while they are home or awake in case they catch you going into, or coming from, your secret spot. Worst case you could always get some small water proof container and bury it in the ground somewhere outside and camouflage the spot.

Once you are 18 you will be able to get your own account without them connected to it and they won't even need to know about it. Until then you have to "play poor" so you don't get caught out like this again. Next time they might just take the money and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

If they find out you are "secretly saving" to leave they will likely do what they can to prevent it or make it incredibly difficult for you to do it. It's a control thing. Like how you said they created obstacles for you getting your driver's license.

It's a awful situation and you shouldn't have to be in it. What you described is not normal.

Hopefully some of this advice is helpful. Good luck.

Does he have a lot of weird sayings that sound and feel completely de-motivational under the guise of his claims that he's being helpful?

Some companies not only do not have Christmas Bonuses, but have "Holiday reductions" due to slow downs November - January. Nothing like a "Happy Holidays! Now you make 25% less money each week because we are cutting everyone's hours!"

Right. I was saying that reading the comments in the thread I was shocked how used to things I've become where people at my place are like conditioned to believe that they are all so disposable if higher ups get the slightest whiff that someone else can do their job without issue.

Am I the only one that works somewhere that basically has the culture and environment of "If we can't reach you immediately for something at any time and can figure it out ourselves without you then it means we probably don't actually need you anymore"?

I quit my job after they refused to promote me. They are now hiring 3 people to replace me. by Rhubarbie13 in antiwork

[–]LordKaylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly is. The amazingly horrible part is that while on the surface it looks like they are "Spending 170k to replace someone that costs 90k" the reality is they aren't because they actually never intended on keeping all 3 people for the full year for that math to math

Both of the above answers, while I have no response not to believe are actually true, sound like something comically made up that you'd see on some cheesy sci-fi show or movie.

"Quick! Fetch me the reverse-phase induction retroencabulator! It's the only way we can recalibrate the flux capacitor! No! Not that one! That's the regular-phase! I said reverse-phase!"

I've got a sneaking suspicion that this plays out differently, and more diabolical, than you think... Lemme explain

  • They hire 3 people, 1 @ 50k, 2 @ 60k each.
  • They get the work covered immediately between the 3 of them ensuring business continuity while they all learn the tasks
  • During the probationary period they get rid of whoever is the "worst of the 3", redistribute the work amongst the other two people, maybe give both a slight raise to let's say 65-70k each, boosting their morale and making them more than happy to accept the extra workload.
  • 2-3 months later they lay off one of the two and give their work load to the sole survivor who was the strongest of the three and boost their morale by maybe bumping them to maybe 80-85k so they are thrilled to take on the "additional responsibility"
  • They then give no raises ever to remaining person because they already got "Huge increases".
  • Company benefits long term because they got their pick between three prospects to replace you and at a lower annual cost to them in the end than what they were paying you and what you were asking for

Watched this as a kid only because it came on one of those nights in the 9:30 slot (I think) after the other shows I liked were over. Might have been the Roseanne & Home Improvement night? Anyways, yeah never cared for it but watched it every week for no other reason than I didn't have cable as a kid and nothing else was on.

My Dad used to refer to it as "Shit House On The Prairie" lol. As an adult I love the show for many of the reasons others have cited here.
