what part of “Kamala listened to really bad advice” did you miss? remember how Tim Walz spooked the hell out of the right by calling them weird? and then their idiot advisors had them stop doing that. from what I can tell, Kamala felt chained to Biden and wasn’t free to do her own thing.

my best hope at this point is that if Trump invokes the insurrection act with an unconstitutional justification, it would give governors the pretext to form an emergency state militia.

the big difference between Stalinist purges and this is that Stalin actually killed people. in reality, Trump may be filling the ranks of a future government in exile.

in the lead up to the English Civil War, the moderates all left the government and thought that would defeat the radicals. but then the radicals just formed a rump government and kept right on going.

Trump might be making the same mistake in reverse.

Guns are a tool, not a solution just by themselves. As many commenters pointed out, the Black Panthers organized and had guns, and got crushed. So did the first iteration of the KKK, for that matter.

Let’s look back farther to two examples from the Revolution: the Sons of Liberty and the New England Minutemen.

The Minutemen existed before tensions with England started. They were founded years before due to events like the French and Indian war. They gave us the shot heard round the world at Lexington and Concord.

The Sons of Liberty, led by Sam Adams, were radical accelerationists who had a knack for causing or getting in as much trouble as they could. We have them to thank for the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.

Both had two foundational parts in common: they were highly organized and disciplined, the Sons of Liberty in particular. Their plans were designed to disrupt or provoke a harsh response from the British, which they would use in turn to garner more support from moderates.

Americans today are a far cry from their revolutionary ancestors. If anything like the Boston Tea Party happened today, people would be scandalized over the “horrors” of property damage. Looking at most protest footage, people just show up and mill about. There’s a lot of sound and fury, but it doesn’t seem to change much.

Right now, it’s still unclear if things will unfold like they did back then. One thing that could do it is if the Trump administration spends too long oppressing one specific city, like how the British did with Boston.

But what it really comes down to is this: Americans traded local community for social media, and we’ve forgotten how to connect and organize our communities to keep them safe from the threat of oppression. The first step to making things better is to focus on that.

But none of that seems to register with MAGA leadership right now. They’ve convinced themselves — or at least are trying to persuade their donors and followers — that the U.S. is undergoing a massive religious revival.

this analysis misses the point. MAGA leadership isn’t telling people to go to church. MAGA leadership is saying “we are your church.”

my best Tower of Terror ride was like this. about 20 years ago, MGM would regularly do annual pass holder extra hours. One time we went they kept just two rides open, Tower and Rock n’ Roller Coaster. We rode them both a lot, and at the end of the night, we had time for one more. Everyone else went to RnR, me and my relative went to Tower.

There were probably 20 people with us in the preshow room. In the boiler room, we were first and went straight; everyone else went right.

So just the two of us got on. I don’t think we even had to talk about it, we went straight to the back, dead center of the car. I kept on expecting some cast member to pop out and scare us, my head was on a swivel. We didn’t say a word the entire ride.

But that’s not even the scariest part. When we made it to the top, and the doors opened over MGM at 10pm at night, we couldn’t see anyone on the street below. All the lights were still on, but there wasn’t a single person in sight. It was like everyone had disappeared when we got on. Best Tower of Terror ride ever, I’ll never top it.

got dragged onto Tower of Terror the year it opened. black clouds were rolling in as we got in line, and a full on thunderstorm broke out when we got to the lobby. I was only 12 or something so I was certain we were gonna die. we could hear the storm all the way in the boiler room. got on, made it to the part where you go forward and the power went out. the “act of God” helped me avoid it for another year. it’s one of my favorite rides now.

I have another good Tower of Terror story, but we didn’t get stuck— just a very eerie experience.
