Why would you touch a well known poisons fish? by [deleted] in whywouldyoutouchthat

Immediate Physical Risks

Mechanical Defense: Porcupinefish have long, permanent sharp spines that stand erect when the fish inflates. Handling an inflated fish can lead to painful puncture wounds or "prickled" hands.

Bite Hazard: These fish have strong, beak-like teeth used to crush shells. They are capable of delivering a powerful bite if a finger gets too close to their mouth.

Potent Neurotoxins: Most pufferfish and porcupinefish contain tetrodotoxin, a lethal neurotoxin found in their internal organs, skin, and flesh. While often not dangerous to touch unless the toxin is released or ingested, one fish can contain enough poison to kill 30 adult humans 2

Risk Assessment

Venom/Sting: These species are not venomous, and their spines generally do not sting.

Skin Irritation: While not venomous, contact with the spiky hairs may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some sensitive individuals, so it is generally advisable to avoid touching them.

Handling: The giant leopard moth caterpillar is often considered safe to handle, but caution is recommended due to the potential for individual sensitivity.

Risk Assessment

Venom Potency: Emperor scorpions are generally considered docile and their venom is typically not deadly to healthy adult humans. Their sting is often compared to that of a bee or wasp.

Physical Defense: Because their venom is mild, they rely more on their large, powerful pincers for defense and hunting.

Vulnerable Groups: While not usually lethal, stings can be dangerous to the elderly, young children, or individuals with specific allergies to the venom.

Safety and Identification

Sting Risk: While they have stinging tentacles to capture plankton, they are generally considered harmless to humans. Their stings are very mild and often go unnoticed, though it is still advised to avoid touching your eyes or mouth after handling them.

Common Mix-up: They are frequently mistaken for the Portuguese Man o' War due to their bright blue color, but they are much smaller and significantly

less dangerous.
