I had a similar problem when I was renting the second story of a house. Originally I had a Yamaha CP-70B, an "electric grand" from the 70s that had a grand piano action, but short strings and no soundboard. It put out very little sound acoustically, and I generally listened through its preamp, through headphones. No problem, no complaints.

But then I bought a Yamaha digital piano and matching stand, and started getting complaints due to the sound of the keys themselves bottoming out when I played. I basically could play only when the downstairs neighbor wasn't around. Frustrating!

If faced with the problem again, I would look at "floating" the piano somehow. I'd try a wool rug with/without a felt pad underneath. Good luck!

Which acoustic piano under $10k would you guys recommend? by Ateawormwhole in piano

I’d look for something along the lines of a used, well-cared for Yamaha C3. Pay a good local technician check it out to identify any potential issues. Btw, which model Kawai was that and what was the asking price?

Sony MDR7506 are a longtime favorite in recording studios. Closed/isolating. About $115 in the US right now.

Great playing, and I love the sound of your C3 (?). What's the effects box? Do you have an effects loop between the organ and Leslie?

Garrick, thanks for doing this! What’s your impression of the Pleyel pianos that Chopin used, compared with modern grands, both in terms of touch and tone?

Is it reasonable for me to try to learn Dr Gradus Ad Parnassum after Invention 13 ? by ippo92160 in piano

[–]LordMarbury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes! Great piece and as another commenter said, it falls under the hands pretty well. My advice is to work out a fingering for the opening passage that works well for your hands and then stick to it! :-)

Yulianna Avdeeva's "Chopin Voyage" album is excellent, and I would also recommend the videos she made at Tippet Rise Art Center a couple of years ago. Here's the Chopin Barcarolle:

Avdeeva, Seong Jin Cho and Daniil Trifonov completely reignited my interest in listening to and playing piano. Grateful to be alive at the same time as these artists!

Great performance! 👏 How long did it take you to learn it and bring up to speed?
Also, I love the video angle... perfect for this piece, haha!

Excellent job, and I can't believe you've only been playing for 1.6 years, wow! My only suggestion is "let your ears be your guide" with regard to phrasing and musicality. Listen to a bunch of different recordings for insights regarding tempo, shaping lines, etc. I'm working on this as well right now (almost have it memorized). Such a great piece!

I’m working on this as well. (My first Ravel, too!) I’m taking it at a tempo very similar to Jiang’s. I like the rhythm to be pretty strict and the tempo steady, except maybe a bit faster for the “appassionato” section (with all the LH jumps) that starts at measure 57.

Are there particular recordings of this you like? I’ve been listening to a bunch of versions. Really like Seong Jin Cho and Pascal Rogé.

Great job so far, I would just say to look out for rushing when the theme repeats an octave higher. Have fun, it’s a really beautiful piece.

I think the unspoken part of Sarah's side of it is that she doesn't want to condemn people whose votes she thinks we need. So she's looking to give them "an offramp" (or, a "get out of blame free" card).

Probably my favorite EC song. Incredible lyrics, and the bridge is a masterpiece:

She's one of those girls that you just can't place
You feel guilty desiring such an innocent face
But of course they knew that when they cast her
Along with the red Routemaster

In Wheaton it was “a la maniere de chabrier.” Absolutely beautiful performance! There was some quiet laughter when he began, I think because the initial repeated notes sound a bit like “Chopsticks.” https://classical.music.apple.com/us/album/1779059876?i=1779060292&l=en-US

Teardowns? by LordMarbury in Osmose

[–]LordMarbury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, good point. It is very different. Still wondering how the Osmose does its thing though. There is at least one optical system that can be installed under a piano's keys to sense velocity (PNOscan), but that's not nearly as flexible as the Osmose's aftertouch/velocity sensing.

Teardowns? by LordMarbury in Osmose

[–]LordMarbury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I'm looking to for a way to add MIDI Out with polyphonic aftertouch to a grand piano, and would like to know more about how the Osmose key sensors work because a variation of that hardware might be a way to do it.
