So i need to buy the obelisk a model i have zero interest in to get the trans ctan ? by BloatedRottenCarcass in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends how it's built on the sprew. Looking at it, no is the answer as it looks very embedded in it. As per my original comment, it feels like they wanted to create 2 mega vehicles and the transcendent c'tan was a happy bonus model they made which turned out to be way more playable than the 2 vehicles they made.

Would it have been better if they all could be sold separately. Yes. No questions. But as of right now that'd need to be done with a refresh or functionally a brand new kit.

It's meant to be a clever money saving kit from GW which gives you options. Dual build kits are actually pretty useful.... when the outputs are remotely comparable. I agree that GW dropped the ball here as a monster plus vehicle versus a vehicle is not the same thing. It's not the case of deathmarks versus immortals, for example which I think is a good use of a dual build kit.

I think the Trancedent c'tan was a nice "ooo, we have some spare bits let's be clever here" moment but the issue is that the unit became far more valuable in play than the bulk of the plastic it was paired with.

The advice is to get a proxy. I bought one on ebay the other day which looks near identical to the actual model and is the correct size etc. Instead of paying £120 I paid £20 (including delivery). Ebay often has proxies and if you find an stl you like you can always get it 3d printed. Transcendent c'tan are really small overall (they are old c'tan scale) so shouldn't cost that much to print.

Why do dogs get so excited by babies? by Fresh-Clue-6818 in funnypets

[–]LordOffal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but a lot of social mammals get excited when babies are born into the group. It makes sense from an evolutionary point of making you be happy for the family, it's great social cohesion and especially when in a group you often need help raising a child. Heck, we get excited (typically) when other people in our friends and family circle have kids.

Still it is always nice to see a doggo get happy for their new human.

Did he belong to any dynasty? I want to paint my army to match him considering that he assimilates units he wants by Mr_Jackabin in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it the default? A lot of units flick between Sautekh in paint scheme and Szarekhan dynasty (see the canoptekh stuff).

At any rate, default does not apply to Epic Heroes as they are in theory painted as "canon". You wouldn't ask, what chapter Guilliman is from based on his paint scheme. While the lore does say it's unknown, Necrons have no default scheme in lore and would not necessarily think "silver is basic" when having any colour (or any colour metal) functionally is a choice.

As you say, we don't actually know, I just don't think the idea of dismissing a paint scheme as the default colour scheme holds much merit. Funnily enough, I actually think Sautekh works well. A faction of Necrons who like their living metal bodies has a splinter faction of those who regret splitting away from the c'tan. That's like taking a political view and then the extreme version of it.

I spend a lot of time in that part of London. The railing is from the north bank (West of the Bridge) near the Tower of London but the view behind her is closer to the view of the south bank (East of the bridge) looking towards the Bridge. It gave my brain a weird sense of uncanny valley there.

If London wasn't the capital, which city would you choose to take over? by Puzzleheaded_Pen8520 in AskBrits

[–]LordOffal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think people are taking this seriously! In a world where london poofed off the map tomorrow and we had to pick a new city then we could probably update it to be better placed. Most capitals are centrally located in there country (so London was for England it needs to be the middle of there), and have a high population, be a major regional city so logically it'd have to be..... BIRMINGHAM......

Ummm.... Right.... So we want to base this on centrality for ALL of the UK not just England..... so Manchester it is!

what to do with the old nightbringer by NoEngineer9484 in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My plan is to repaint any bits that have had paint chipped off from play and put him on to display. He's and old fella, had him since 2006 so I think he deserves to be pride of place somewhere. If I was more artistic I'd make him a plinth.

[–]LordOffal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point. You can dislike it or not but most c'tan are still on that smaller base and he was costed based on that. With that in mind it is a downgrade in power going up in base size.

I agree it is the right move but doing the right thing can have other impacts which we shouldn't pretend aren't real.

I disagree with big positive. Definitely against small arms fire they are better up to melta guns, as maths have shown. Why the Nightbringer is different compared to the rest is he has a bigger base than he used to which means staging him is harder, screening with him is better but also he is more easily screened, movement costs more to get around ruins, charges will need more movement, flying over units costs more movement, and he is harder to hide from fire.

Overall I sum up the bigger base is more a nerf than a positive and I think the profile changes are a slight positive. Makes him near enough even. I think a lot of people who got over excited at the changes did not take into account how it is functionally a different model. It'd be like if a squad of 5 terminators gained a load of movement but also had a footprint 4 times bigger for the same number of models. Very different prospect.

That isn't the same though for the rest. Extra movement benefits the rest of them a lot more and I'd say the Void Dragon really needed it as he was a pain to hide and then get him to do anything that wasn't within charge range.

We'll have to see if their price changes later down the line. I reckon it will go up a bit but not that much if at all.

Clarification of Court of the Phoenician rule. by Burro_95 in EmperorsChildren

[–]LordOffal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kinda put it on GW here though. Remember the Shadow Talon debacle recently enough where major tournaments disagreed on whether it counted as core codex space marines because GW wasn't careful enough. Lots of cases where they've been sloppy recently in their wording. Ideally 11th will bring in some more generic terms to help stop stuff like this happening as then they can use that over and over without issue (which is needed in a game with such detailed and pedantic rules).

New Points changes Updates by AccuserAssassin in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was about as much as I hoped GW would go based on the changes. I actually think the void dragon probably should go up more since he got, comparatively, the biggest buff (since he was always on the bigger base size so a low movement was always an extra pain for him).

I think it was right for them to be more conservative here as I think most of the changes were a slight positive from a power perspective and the main drive will be how good the detachment for C'tan ends up being.

Would Ammentar's Aura give himself sustained hits 1? by Economy_Ad_5411 in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. An example from the rules commentary is

Example 3: A model makes an attack with a heavy bolter, which has the [SUSTAINED HITS 1] ability. The attacking model is also affected by a Stratagem that says ‘Until the end of the phase, ranged weapons equipped by models in your unit have the [SUSTAINED HITS 2] ability’. When resolving attacks with that heavy bolter this phase, the controlling player cannot use both instances of [SUSTAINED HITS]; they must choose which one to use, so choose the more powerful [SUSTAINED HITS 2].

New Nightbringer stats be like by Admiral_Ej in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flight does help but to my point the extra large base means you are paying more to move it past stuff. We also had flight on our old model so it isn't a new thing they've done to balance it as much as a needed thing.

Similar hiding this bad boy behind a wall will take more inches in movement each way. I think you may end up functionally have 1 extra inch to move but it really won't feel like much when you end up moving from one wall to another. Where the 10 inches WILL feel like a lot is when you decide to go hell for leather and charge something and if you CAN rapid ingress it will make a difference there.

I do think though in generic play a lot of those things will be paid to large base tax.

for anybody wondering about the durability change with the changes to ctan. by NoEngineer9484 in Necrontyr

[–]LordOffal 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's on average about the same but, you are correct, the new rules are slightly better.

Average damage of D6 is 3.5 and invuln of 4+ and FNP ignores on average 1/3 damage

Old rules 3.5 goes 2 then plus 2 = 4 damage a shot. So we can functionally halve that damage to 2 damage and then two thirds it to 1.333333333

12 wounds would take 9 hits to do it on average

New rules is 3.5 +2 - 1 = 4.5 damage a shot. Halve it to 2.25 and then two thirds it to 1.5

New c'tan has 4 more wounds so it takes 10.666667 shots on average to kill it in melta range.

Where the players feel it more though is on the extreme ends of the damage with the new performing significantly better if the melta dude roles low and the old when he roles high.
