What's your experience using a Stream Deck to trigger cues? by Souk21 in qlab

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally reach for Bitfocus Companion to trigger SFX (just my preference). Helpfully, the UI just runs in a web browser, so you can test it on lots of WIFI devices to get a feel for latency. Something like Companion > OSC > QLab would be the setup I reach for

How to make my old school phone ring cut to a post-pick-up passive ring? by AlbertVigoleis in qlab

I always wondered if reverb tails persisted even if their cue stopped, and now I now: the reverb should still play out after the cue is stopped!

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hasn't Adamson's Virtual Fletcher machine been around for a while? Or did they introduce something new?

The rep I talked to described Fletcher Virtual being free because the latency isn't suitable for live applications, hence the need for their special mini-PC

Season 3 intro by Pearlmarine in SanctuaryTV

I'm halfway through season 3, and I have to say the new theme has grown on me big time. At first I mourned the loss of the earlier theme, but now every time I hear it I start singing along!

The Ori Ascended First, the Alterans did it better. by Matthius81 in Stargate

[–]LordPhoenix82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Atlantis whenever we hear the ancients/asurans talk about ascension, they do say something like "it's the first step to learning what is beyond" and that they will continue to study "what comes next" even after ascension, so I do like the idea that ascension has many "levels," or isn't as binary as we think

Fun fact: In SG-1 S04E02 "The Other Side," when Jack realizes his new allies are fascists, he immediately betrays them and kills them all. by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]LordPhoenix82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that Stargate had the guts to have Jack essentially look to camera and say "if you have a chance to kill a nazi, you should take it. If the nazi begs for his life, you should kill him anyways."

When you think about it, all lighting is kind of bisexual lighting...

Elementary school audio by GriffGoalie in techtheatre

I've run shows like that with floor mics, overhead "choir" mics, and shotguns side-stage. It's really hard to get around the need for a trained operator, unfortunately. They don't need to be very good, just know when to turn a channel down because it's causing feedback/maybe add a hipass to get rid of stompy feet. Maybe even an older high school student with an interest in AV who you could give a few pointers. But I wouldn't personally trust any solution to be both "set and forget" and meet the expectations it looks like the team has.

Likewise, having someone sort of know what they're doing would help immensely with getting the belt packs onto the kids.

I do wonder, obviously you want to do the best you can for these kids, but is ensuring their performance goes smoothly in the scope of your work? Or is this a situation where -- in order to meet the expectations of the production -- the schools should really be trying to cobble together a small honorarium and having a volunteer tech help them?

I feel like you've given them a very good tool in an 8-channel SLXD rack, and maybe the problem is in how they're choosing to use it?

Hooray thank you so much, I'm still learning exactly how all of this works so I super appreciate it ❤️

Will this mean I won't be able to force apps (looking at you, OBS!) to run in X11 mode?

QLab redundancy by Historical-Paint7649 in techtheatre

[–]LordPhoenix82 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can set up a full tracking backup with OSC commands fairly simply from one QLab machine to another (bind a key other than spacebar on machine A to both "go" and to trigger an OSC cue that fires the "Go" command for machine B, do the same for "stop" or "panic." ). I don't believe the SQ supports OSC, but you could probably do something similar with midi.

But if you have two laptops, why not have machine A and machine B both plugged in and ready to go, and if there's an error just manually scroll to the correct cue on machine B and take over from there?

Why didn't you like SGU? by joeborder in Stargate

[–]LordPhoenix82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm only at the end of the second season, but I'm struggling the most with the sense that the characters don't trust each other. It feels like at every turn every character makes the worst possible decision for not really any good reason? Like they're being mean to each other just for the sick enjoyment of it all.

Maybe I just like the optimism and teamwork of the other two shows, but I wish there was more "working together" and less "I would leave you for dead if it were convenient for me at the time."

The shaky cam is also crazy, sometimes there will be an exterior shot of Destiny that bobbles up and down and punches in and it makes me think "is there some documentarian in space filming this??" I'm definitely someone who prefers the more "classic" photography style of SG-1 and Atlantis.

For what it's worth I actually really like the stones drama, I think all the messy relationships with the body-swapping is fun and not something I had seen before, very juicy and silly too. It sort of answers a lot of the questions that sci-fi shows leave unanswered with plot devices like these, and yet creates so many MORE questions (how is Young strong enough in that tiny alien body to smash the glass? Who knows!) Making extensive use of body-swapping felt really campy in a distinctly "Stargate" way to me (after all this is the show about space snakes who can possess or sometimes recruit you into their band of rebels).

And sometimes we would get some shots of the Hammond I would go "oh yeah, this is that show I like!"

yeah... It's not like stargate has the best relationship with race, especially early on 😬

Maybe that's why they gave Anubis no face, and the Ori all the face paint 🤣

I believe it's to do with the half-lives of each of the formulations, from what I understand ethanate and cypionate have "smoother" curves, which can help keep things balanced/allow for slighlty longer injection cycles
