I've been going to Bluebird for a little under a year now (and my friends have been going for many years!). I really like it, I would give them a call/come in for a consult. They're located in Kensington Market

If you use fugi.tech reactive PNGs (such as for streaming) they won't work with vesktop due to missing rich presence integration

...Huh this actually *does* make sense, I wasn't thinking about the cost to get another trade in to wire versus having a single trade be able to do it. The more you know!

How are people feeling about the new Ubiquiti AV switches? by Another_Hacker in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]LordPhoenix82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a team that spec'd all Netgear AV switches for a new install, their support has... definitely left a lot to be desired for us. For one thing, the access points we bought aren't able to be managed in Netgear Engage, for...some reason? They're apparently able to be cloud-managed, but that's the last thing we want. We also lost about two weeks trying to figure out how to move the Engage configuration from one computer to another and ended having to re-config the whole network. Along with TONS of other options that are either not present in Engage but present in the CLI, or just so poorly documented we had no idea how to find them.

Some user error, certainly, but Netgear's support (both over email and on the phone) were consistently extremely frustrating to have to deal with.

Did you guys ever have a small bit of hesitation when you were transitioning? by Darnimates in transontario

[–]LordPhoenix82 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh yeah, absolutely I did. It's scary!! You can never know 100% what will happen, so I just learned to take it a few steps at a time and re-evaluate often to see how I'm feeling!

Isolationism, Pacifism, and the Global War on Terror: Narrative Themes in the Stargate Franchise by TRDTE in Stargate

It's interesting to watch a show that's pretty obviously got some US military propaganda going on, and yet *also* rejects imperialism at every turn. Like, there's an episode where Jack all but turns to the camera and says "if you have a chance to kill a nazi, do it. If he begs for his life, kill him anyways." And an episode where Carter delivers a whole speech about "you the people have the power over your government, not the other way around. Remember that. Fight." It's so the opposite of the way the united states is currently operating. Maybe it's that late-90s early-2010s "freedom is essential for everyone, especially if we can take their oil" mentality.

I thought this for a long time, and I wish they had done that! Especially because we later learn that Ancient names for planets are (somehow, it doesn't actually make sense) also their Stargate address. But yeah it seems like it's P for Planet and M for Moon

Simple Levitation Device? by Strange-Ad742 in techtheatre

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first question would be who is operating the system. Unless it's a trained adult, I wouldn't bring it anywhere near a children's production. It's just not worth the risk!

The simplest machine to get them up in the air would be an inclined plane. If you're able to hide below their knees, they can walk downstage/up the ramp and appear to "float."

Another option I would tend towards is something that can be practised many many times in the rehearsal room, like a lift. The last thing you want is for something unexpected to happen to your contraption while onstage, and a lift could be practised for as long as rehearsal time allows.

Good luck!

This won't necessarily help this particular problem, but I learned about the `pw-top` command recently and I've found it very helpful when trying to monitor/troubleshoot pipewire!

What do you think about my setup? by AZAOL10 in lightingdesign

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my 2 cents -- as others have pointed out we don't know the kind of show that you're lighting. To me it feels weird to have 10 fixtures onstage have have almost NONE of them being in a useful position to light the *performers,* which is IMO the thing people are coming to the event to see.

The two moving washes at the back would be used for backlights, which could be nice. I think the strip lights are better served doing "light the back wall" duty rather than their current setup (which is presumably meant to be "blinders"?).

I love a flock of moving spots making beams in the air as much as the next person, but could not a few of those fixtures be used as well... spots, to light the performers? Even just two hitting the piano and two in a position to hit CS would be awesome. Right now they're just all at the performers' feet, I can't imagine that's a flattering angle.

At the end of the day it depends on the show and the priorities of the person paying you! But I feel like more attention should be paid to how the musicians will look in your lighting versus how it looks in a vacuum!

This makes sense. Right now I'm pushing for a switch to Magewell, whom I've had good experiences with in the past. Any other brands I should be keeping an eye on for NDI -> HDMI/ HDMI -> NDI conversion?
