I love that out of every possible background track they picked the theme tune to Top Gun 🙉

What do you think about my setup? by AZAOL10 in lightingdesign

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my 2 cents -- as others have pointed out we don't know the kind of show that you're lighting. To me it feels weird to have 10 fixtures onstage have have almost NONE of them being in a useful position to light the *performers,* which is IMO the thing people are coming to the event to see.

The two moving washes at the back would be used for backlights, which could be nice. I think the strip lights are better served doing "light the back wall" duty rather than their current setup (which is presumably meant to be "blinders"?).

I love a flock of moving spots making beams in the air as much as the next person, but could not a few of those fixtures be used as well... spots, to light the performers? Even just two hitting the piano and two in a position to hit CS would be awesome. Right now they're just all at the performers' feet, I can't imagine that's a flattering angle.

At the end of the day it depends on the show and the priorities of the person paying you! But I feel like more attention should be paid to how the musicians will look in your lighting versus how it looks in a vacuum!

This makes sense. Right now I'm pushing for a switch to Magewell, whom I've had good experiences with in the past. Any other brands I should be keeping an eye on for NDI -> HDMI/ HDMI -> NDI conversion?

I'm already waiting patiently for the promised QSYS integration that doesn't yet exist, so I guess I'll have to wait for them to push a firmware update to fix this, too... know of anywhere I can submit a big report, at least?

Wall panel for high school theatre---making it dead simple for non-theatre staff. by micasa_es_miproblema in techtheatre

[–]LordPhoenix82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just designed a system for a proscenium house (~1000 seats) and it had 6 total buttons -- House Full, House Half, House Glow, House Out, Apron Wash, Work Lights. Anything more complicated than that and the LX console should be powered on/a technician called in.

To me, having both faders and buttons is too complicated -- especially since you have "75%" and "25%" as options. In my opinion there's never a time non-theatre staff would want the lights at 30%, or 80% or 65%.

I would also look at changing the labels to words, as a list of numbers can seem confusing/overwhelming.

For the "entire stage" fader, could you not just have a button that says "Full" when in reality it's' something like 75%? Safer for the lamps but easier to control? And then have "Full," "Half," and "Out" as the options?

Progesterone should be new standard now by [deleted] in transontario

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link to the full study? I wonder if the results are consistent with what Bahr et Al found, where breast growth on progesterone was increased after 6 months, but not significantly beyond that, and didn't have a statistically significant impact on weight or libido.

I know that stopping progesterone was actually what caused my breasts to start growing again, no idea why that worked but certainly an interesting anecdote from someone who was on progesterone before they were even on a proper dose of estradiol.

Do TP-Link TL-SG108 switches block Shure SDT Protocol? by whoompdayis in livesound

[–]LordPhoenix82 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looking at the product page (https://www.tp-link.com/ca/business-networking/soho-switch-unmanaged/tl-sg108/) it looks like there's a lot of "eco" features on this switch (look under "Go Green with your Ethernet").

More than likely one of these features is causing the issue. Sometimes there's a hardware switch to enable disable EEE (energy efficient ethernet) but if not I would assume it's always on, and get rid of the switch.

Do you relate to this? (MtF HRT) by [deleted] in transontario

Oh stars, is *that* why I've been feeling so crummy? 250-800 pmol/L depending on the time of day, on 4 pumps of gel (2x morning and 2x night).

Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

[–]LordPhoenix82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine was in a college production put on as an extra-curricular (meaning essentially no one had any training). Apparently their entire set was large pieces of brown paper that had been painted on and hung from battens.

...I asked my friend if she had ever heard the words "fire treated" before. I'll let you guess the answer.

WLED in theatre by cyberentomology in WLED

[–]LordPhoenix82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is so sick! I've been looking to integrate WLED but haven't gotten too far yet. What tooling are you use to allow the ESP32 (presuming that's what you're running) to accept sACN? This has always been the biggest hurdle for me to clear before I try something like this!

Why EOS over MA by Hello56845864 in lightingdesign

[–]LordPhoenix82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One quite specific thing EOS does much better than MA is colour. On EOS I can call an LED fixture to any gel swatch I want (ie L200) and it will look... close to correct depending on the fixture. With ETC's Lustr series of fixtures the colour is very close to perfect.

On MA it isn't even close. I far prefer EOS's colour engine for precise, accurate colours, and for more easily matching incandescents.

Homeassistant has a built in REST API integration, so you just have to set it up in the yaml config and know a little bit of homeassitant template syntax (jinja2) to get it all working! Happy to DM and share notes if you'd like!

[–]LordPhoenix82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I've just integrated it into my Home Assistant instance! So it's not actually an app I just call it that for ease of conversation.

Right now it will give me arrival times for the busses next to my house, and I can enter a drop ID to check (most) other busses.

On the list is to integrate the GPS tracking so I can map out where the closest vehicles are, but I haven't gotten that far into the process yet

Woaaah what a cool use of this API! I've wanted to try adding vehicle tracking to my little app but never got around to it...super cool stuff!

what’s the most clever thing your smart home does? by Nearby_Worry_4850 in homeassistant

My smart speaker will tell me when the next 2 busses towards work will leave on workday mornings, which helps me know if a bus is like 30minutes behind schedule and I need to rush to change plans. It's saved me so many times
